Just a head’s up, currently applying for HPSP in the Navy with a 19AA. So a 20 is definitely more competitive, but you can apply with less than a 20 (at least with the Navy)

My son just got accepted into dental school and trying to get the HPSP....both his father and grandfather were in the Air Force....grandfather was a dentist as well. He got a 23 on the DAT and 30 on the Bio.....3.7 on his masters degree...majored in genetics and Bio from UF. Hoping he get this! Has been a dream of his since he was little!

My friend got a 25 on the DAT and he was never accepted to the Air Force. Navy took him right up. I got a 21 and I started the application and the Air Force recruiter made it very clear that they are very selective, they don’t want you to be with other branches or look elsewhere. But when I talked army and navy, they were chill. And not at all jealous. Also the requirements are lower and it seems just as good. Oh, and he had only 4 spots while the other branches had like 40 or 50 spots… another fiend got the navy HPSP with a 19.

Quick question for Ryan. Here’s some context for my situation. I scored a 22 AA and 22 TS on my DAT. I had 24+ sub scores for gen and organic (didn’t do so hot in undergrad chem courses). With that being said, my undergrad gpa is a 3.5 currently and below the 3.6 minimum but my grade trends have been straight A’s for my past 5 semesters. Based off my situation I was wondering if I could get your opinion on whether I would be a competitive applicant or if I would even be able to apply? Also was wondering if you knew if they take a holistic approach when evaluating your application? Appreciate any response man and loved the video, really gave me perspective and way more info than what’s out there. Take care!

From Ryan, "Hey Juan, It’s surprisingly (or not so surprisingly) hard to find requirement information online about what the requirements are for the HPSP in whichever branch you’re looking into. For example, there’s some student doctor forums that say you need a minimum DAT 19/GPA 3.6, or a DAT 20/GPA 3.4 for the 4 year scholarship, but a 3 year scholarship may have more leniency? And they aren’t specific in what branch. For all I know, the GPA and DAT requirements may have changed a little since I applied 4 years ago. The best way to cut the middle man out is to contact a recruiter, get in touch with a HPSP rep and figure out where you stand competitively. That’s a couple of phone calls. If you don’t mind what branch you’re going into, and just want to be a part of the HPSP military program, it would make sense to apply to all 3 (Army, Navy, Air Force) to increase your chances of getting in. But down the road, they will ask you, why did you want the Air Force and not the Navy? For example. I only applied to the Air Force because I was an all or nothing mentality, but I was told by alumni to apply to all 3. You are correct on the military taking a holistic approach in identifying applicants. Just like dental schools are. Your scores are pretty comparable to what I got and I would say that’s very competitive. There are other parts to the application process that include a resume, a few short essay (paragraph) responses to questions, an interview, and letters of reference. Those all get taken into account. I hope that helps man. Get in contact with a recruiter and polish up everything you have control of to set yourself apart. Make it clear this is important to you. Thanks for the question and good luck!"

I just got out of high school and I am about to enlist in the AF reserves while in college. Am I able to apply to the HPSP scholarship if I’m technically already in the military once I’m almost done with college? I assume there is going to be some type of overlap when I’m applying since I’ve already started school and almost done with enlisting into the reserves.
@StudentPhysicianNetwork
@StudentPhysicianNetwork 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure. That may be a question for your recruiter. I would ask before enlisting. Since you're reserves I think you will be ok, but if its active duty you may have to take a different route. There is also an HPSP Facebook page that someone may be able to hslp you with your question too.

Let's say you want to be an orthodontist and you get the HPSP for dental school, do they also pay for the extra 2-3 years of orthodontics residency and if they do, do you still only owe the 4 year commitment to the military or the 4 + the 2-3 years of the orthodontics residency commitment?
@StudentPhysicianNetwork

I believe you will get additional time commitment for the orthodontist residency.

Do you have to go to regular dental college before going to military dental school in order to become a dentist in the military Or can you just go to military dental school and become a dentist in the military Because once i finish my last years of high school with my jrotc program i plain on going straight into the air force and start my career with in air force ,dentistry (after completing bmt and what not) and once i finish my 4 years of military dental school and when i have to work for the military to “payback” for my schooling , could i do so with dentistry or does it have to be combat edit: and how many years of military dentistry do i have to complete to become a dentist in the military sorry i just really needed to know and thanks if you read this

Before you make that decision you may want to apply for AirForce academy for undergrad. You need a bachelor's degree to get into dental school (or at least college pre requisites). Do not enlist! That will slow your path to dentistry. You need to become an officer. I would talk to you recruiter or ROTC person to find out the best path. I do not know how to get there from highschool. But I do know you need college credits and a DAT score to apply to dental school.

Great video! Thanks a lot for the info, really helpful. I wonder if you have some advices on how to answer the below questions please. These are questions from the Airforce HPSP application that i’m filling out now, and I don’t really know how I should address them. 1. Would you like to provide the selection board with any further information on specific aspects of your academic record or application file? 2. What are your long term goals? 3. Why should you be selected? What do you have to offer the Air Force? (2 part question) Thanks a lot in advance!!

Sorry for the late reply I've been studying for STEP1. I would say just be honest! The last thing you want to convey is dishonesty or that you're trying to tell them what they want to hear. I cant tell you what to put cause I'm not sure thatd be good for your situation lol.

What do you have to score on the asvab to get the dentistry job?
@StudentPhysicianNetwork
@StudentPhysicianNetwork 4 жыл бұрын
So you actually dont take the asvab. You need to go to a 4 year institution to get a bachelor's degree and take the DAT (dental admissions test). Then you can apply for this scholarship for dental school. The DAT is a way more intense and difficult exam that you take typically after your junior year of college or during. They dont look at Asvab scores for this because asvab is typically a test you take to become enlisted

Is there any way to get around the 20 on the DATin the air force? If you have a great GPA, for example, but have an 18 on the DAT, will the air force still consider you for the scholarship? Thanks!
@StudentPhysicianNetwork
@StudentPhysicianNetwork 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I believe the airforce will still consider you if you dont get a 20, but it will make it harder for applications. You wont be as competitive as some of the other applicants. But still try for it.

Is COT the exact same for dental and medical students? What were the physical requirements for both MEPS and COT?
@StudentPhysicianNetwork
@StudentPhysicianNetwork 3 жыл бұрын
Yes dental and med do both. You can check out my COT week 1 video to get an idea of what it is like. Physical requirements were run 1.5 miles in less than 15 min I think, 30 push-ups and 30 situps in a minute (1 min each). Then have a waist smaller than 30 in or something pretty generous.

Is there a requirement you have to meet for medical school grades every semester where you can’t go under a certain gpa?
@StudentPhysicianNetwork
@StudentPhysicianNetwork 5 жыл бұрын
So many schools dont have graded any more (like unmc) they have pass/fail. As for the scholarship, no, you do not need to meet a certain GPA requirement (so long as you're not failing everything).
