Potemkin came from Zepp a former Authoritarian regime. He was a slave soldier who was born with inhuman strength and muscles. He had a bomb collar strapped around his neck, and was forced to fight against his will. After the events of the first game, Gabriel set him free and together brought down the cruel hierarchy of Zepp. While he is still forced to fight he is fighting for a future where the things that he experienced won't happen to others.

So Leos theme is about survivers guilt, he was a general in a big war and repeatedly was the last man standing when a battle was over, he feels enormous regret because he thinks he lead his friends and comrads to their deaths ("i am the Reaper took my friends to the netherworld"). Leos comes to every battle to die, he becomes more powerfull the more he lets his guard down and the more risky he fights, he makes it easy to kill him but he wants to go down fighting like his friends did, he wants to join them but thinks he will probably end up burning in hellfire.

Some context for you Chipp: It's a bit more complicated than this but he's a recovered drug addict who is a huge weeb (he's American but if you ask him he will tell you he's Japanese) who became a ninja then went to Africa and declared himself president of his newly founded Chipp kingdom. (yes you read that correctly) Leo: War survivor elevated to one of 3 kings after the war against gears (modified creatures ranging in intelligence and appearance from angry animal to hyper intelligent dragon man to normal human) doesn't think he deserves his post because of survivors guilt but hides it with bravado Ky: Another Gear War survivor elevated to king. Ended up falling in love with and marrying a gear. He is understandably conflicted about this due to the fact that he fought a war against gears for years and they did wipe out a good chunk of humanity including destroying all of Japan (this specifically was done by Ky's mother-in-law so that's a bit awkward) Potempkin: During the Gear War a bunch of rich assholes decided to make a flying country so they didn't have to deal with the war. They did this with slave labor. Potempkin is one of the slaves who lead the revolution to overthrow the rich assholes and is helping bring democracy to flying country. Milia: Unethical military experiments lead to her in a toxic relationship with the leader of the assassins guild. She kills him, then his pet monster puppets his corpse around for a while then the monster also gets killed but then they come back to life but they have no emotions or real memories beyond knowing her. This all does extreme emotional damage to her and she's dealing with that.

If you don't mind, I'll give you a quick rundown of what the themes mean to the characters - because context, in my opinion, makes them even better: - "Play the Hero" is the theme of Chipp Zanuff, an american drug dealer turned ninja through a dubious mentor figure. Over the course of Guilty Gear he decided to found a nation of his own, with himself as its president, leading the kinds of people who have nowhere else to go. Unfortunately, he currently is the only inhabitant of his "country". His theme reflects on his struggle to do the right thing, being fed up with people constantly opposing him despite his best efforts to be a good person. But despite that, he's unwilling to let go of his heroic ambitions. That said, he also likes to slightly exaggerate his position as an underdog a bit. - "Hellfire" is dedicated to Leo Whitefang. He's the second king of the kingdom of Illyria (a kingdom emerging out of central Europe after the devastating "Gear War"), but this title is more like a rank, he didn't succeed a first king. Leo is mostly responsible for public security and military affairs, standing as a fearless, intimidating, and highly righteous leader. However, he is mentally scarred from his duty, lamenting the many people who had to die under his command. With the line "my people are all dead but so are those bastards", he tries to give the dead some glorious value while also dehumanizing his enemies who are in the same position. He despises the cruelty of the battlefield and wishes for nothing more than an end to bloody conflicts. He doesn't show these traumata, instead posing as a man of trust to give the people hope and peace of mind. He's also a stickler for rules, and likes to establish new definitions for words, noting them down in a thick book he carries with him. - "The Roar of the Spark" is the theme of Ky Kiske, first king of the kingdom of Illyria. While he is technically superior to Leo, the two work together for the protection of Illyria, and despite their differences, have a great deal of respect for one another. Ky is also the secondary protagonist of the Guilty Gear franchise, representing the typical heroic determinator who fights for the good in the world. After the events of the past Guilty Gear games, he was eventually declared king in the previous entry, serving as a charismatic beacon of hope. His theme covers his wish to guide people towards a brighter future, not wanting to be tied down by pride and glory. But he is aware that he is no superhero, so he's content with his wish to give people even that little flicker of hope that may bring about a better future for all. - "Armor-Clad Faith" is the theme of Potemkin. Hailing from Zepp, a former slave state comprised of India and other eastern countries, he took part in a massive rebellion, breaking himself and his comrades free under the command of his mentor figure, Gabriel. Eventually, Zepp was officially acknowledged as an independent state, and has since then assisted in international affairs. But despite wanting to gain freedom for his people, Potemkin sees very little change. Zepp was, and continues to be, a highly militaristic and industrial nation, constantly gearing up in preparation for a potential war. To that end, Potemkin represents Zepp as a one-man army, despite hating conflict. He always tries to find diplomatic solutions to various conflicts, but is painfully aware that not everyone wants to talk. As his theme portrays, Potemkin struggles with his role in life. He contemplates that, in his fight for freedom, he still remains shackled, bound by his loyalty to his people, unable to question his mission, in fear of losing his purpose. To avoid this inner conflict, he simply does as he is told, despite lacking the conviction to truly serve without question. His insecurities are often picked up on by his opponents, who mock or berate him for fighting without purpose. And he cannot refute it, he can only believe he does the right thing. - "Love the Subuhuman Self" is the theme of Millia Rage. She was raised by members of the Assassin's Guild, a shadow organization specialized in killing. Over the course of history, they have disposed of many public figures deemed problematic by those with the money to pay for it. And Millia was no different: showing great promise at an early age, she was taught the ways of the assassin and eventually made an official member of the guild. She eventually fell in love with Zato, her mentor and father figure. Over the course of the previous games, she eventually came to hate him for his obsession over her, killed him with the intention of quitting her life as a killer, and struggled to accept his continued support after he was brought back to life. Despite having been raised as an assassin, Millia eventually yearned for a normal life, only to realize that her past would always catch up to her, no matter how hard she tries. Her song is about Millia coming to terms with the ugly truth: she is a killer, and there is no ordinary life for her. All she can do is make the best of her situation instead of grasping for the things she cannot have. This desire to have happiness in her life stands contrary to the dirty job she performs, and as of Guilty Gear Strive, she has taken over as leader of the Assassin's Guild in hopes of reining them in and using them to stabilize the world instead of spreading chaos and fear. I can honestly recommend you go through every track little by little. Not only are they wildly different, several of them are also just insanely creative and unique, and I think you will enjoy the variety of Ishiwatari's compositions greatly.

Small correction on Leo Whitefang's theme. While a lot of what you said about it is true, the song largely is about something called Survivors Guilt. He's also constantly throwing himself into battle looking for death, but the warrior in him wont let him simply just roll over and die. He wants to die to atone for all the people who've died following him, but he wants his death to be earned. That's why one of his fighting stances is just straight up exposing his back to his opponent and he can only parry and not guard in that stance.

This game is Daisuke Ishiwatari's baby, he came up with the story and the characters, the mechanics, and he composed and performed all the songs. The man is a legend. Chipp is an ex-drug addict who was saved and taught by a ninja, and now he is the president of his own country. All the themes have lyrics that relate to the character in some way. Quick explaination for Leo: he's a king and a commander, and he has survivor's guilt, imposter syndrome, and possibly PTSD The emphasis on swinging the sword is because he goes out to fight hoping to die, hoping that someone will just end his hell and send him to where his friends are And for Potemkin: he's a former slave of a former authoritarian dictatorship, and led the revolution against the regime, so yeah, he has good reasons to be angry at society. Also he's a Buddhist and a painter.

Real quick character break down for each character to the relevant parts to understand the lyrics. Chipp was a meth addict that was taken in by a ninja to reform his ways. his master was killed by an assassin and ultimately chose to forgo revenge to become a political figure to fix society from the need of assassination. he chose to become president of an african republic to fix the world from the chaos that lead to all of the trials of his life. His life has been crazy and he's a very reactive character who has learned to go with it and impulsive decisions that have have paved his wild life story. Leo was a leader(king) in the crusades against magical monsters(gears) that were wrongly blamed for the hardship of humanity. In the crusades he lead people to their death knowing they were going to die and it turned out in retrospect have been for nothing. He feels like he should have died and that all those that died following him were better and so he fights with reckless abandon to increase the chance that he dies in combat. He is petrified by the survivors guilt and though he still is king and publicly acts to save the world and be a good ruler but wishes he died instead of the thousands that willingly followed him into battle. Ky is one of the main characters so he's got some chosen one tropes, basically he's who humanity looks to as the perfect person and a savior however he's messed up extremely badly in the past and wants to live up to the expectations put upon him by being a shining light for the world to follow. because he's one of two main characters I'd have to explain the major plot of everything in the story and it's really complicated. He's king people look up to him he tries not to mess up but does. honestly the bulk of the first few games could be described as ky learning that racism is bad. Potemkin was a slave. He looks to reform the society from within that cast him out and broke him down as much as it did. He was freed by the now leader of zepp who taught him how to fight. He was massive before but he's augmented his body to be a tool for war to make there be no slaves and the extreme discord and prejudice in society that he comes from can be resolved. He sometimes doubt because he's subservient to a leader that he worries he's just being played for a fool or a tool and that nothing really is going to change even though he's seen things change for the better in his country. He's genuinely one of the nicest characters in the story and any victims of society are who he champions. Zepp was like the nazis but have been trying to reform from within from their society whilst knowing where it came from it was less death and hardship to reform it internally than through bloody revolution(there was some of that) which does mean partaking in some of the oppression and hard rule and embracing the wounded soul of his nation. We love potemkin he's a homie. Millia is an assassin and has experienced a lot of trauma. Her story revolves around zato-1(shadow guy) another character in the story who was the leader of the assassins that took her in at a young age. Being raised by assassins around abuse and was basically groomed to love zato-1 who she would later as an adult would be in a relationship with however because of abuse she became suicidal. She would kill zato-1 for a lot of reasons. The damage of abuse was a lot on her story so learning to love herself to not be suicidal despite viewing herself as sub human. Abuse taught her that nothing was good enough, she views herself as evil and a monster because of what she's done in the past however because of recent events has been allowed a new lease on life and she has to learn to live and love herself despite her trauma. Recommendations for other songs all of the character themes you can't go wrong with however some that I think would be good for this format are. Drift Happy Chaos' theme Alone infection Faust's theme Crawl Nago's Boss theme Let me carve your way zato-1's theme Disaster of passion May's theme Smell of the game Strive main theme find your one way Sol's theme Also incase it wasn't obvious I'm a huge guilty gear fan and have been for decades the game is inextricable from metal with almost every character just being a reference to metal music/musicians in some way.

Chipp is the President of the Eastern Chipp Kingdom somewhere in Africa that has yet to be recognized as an actual country by the United Nations. Leo is the 2nd King of the 3 Kingdoms of Illyria in the aftermath of the Crusades. Leo was just a soldier in the Crusades before being assigned to lead a unit. United Kingdoms of Illyria composes of 3 Kingdoms with the City of Illyria being the Capital City and where the High King/1st King of Elyria works. Illyria is a rebuild version of Rome as only France and the UK survived the aftermath of the Crusades. The 1st King is in charge of Europe and Northern Africa. 2nd King is in charge of Russia and the Middle East. The 3rd King is in charge of the Eastern Part of Eurasia. Ky Kiske was born during the Crusade against Gears and lost his parents during this time. Joined the Sacred Order of Holy Knights at age 10 and was given the leadership of the Sacred Order of Holy Knights during the Crusades at the age of 16. The Order was dissolved at the end of the Crusades. Ky then met the daughter of the leader of the Gears, Dizzy. After some time Ky and Dizzy got married and they're expecting a kid. Ky felt guilty for loving a gear that he fought against during the Crusades and for forcing both his wife and son into hiding. During this time, Ky was nominated to the become the 1st King of Illyria by the United Nations' Conclave after the formation of the other 2 Kingdoms of Illyria. Ky wanted to become a King for the sake of the people but refuses to become a Puppet King for the Conclave. But they began talking about Dizzy and this caused Ky to have a mental breakdown and started praying into the church. Dizzy asked Sol Badguy to talk to Ky and Sol started insulting Ky and fought Ky but Ky's son, Sin stopped the fight. Even though he hate his father, he also don't want his father to get hurt as it will make Dizzy sad. Sol then took Sin under his care for 5 years and Ky became the 1st King of Illyria after this event. Ky then proceeds to do everything he can to not become a puppet while finding ways to give rights to Gears so that his wife, Dizzy and son, Sin will no longer have to hide. There's a lot of stuff that happened in between Ky's story but that's a shortened version of it.

You can't go wrong with any of the suggested songs but you should check out "Holy Orders ~Be Just Or Be Dead~" and then "Awe of She" after those two if you listen to Sin's theme from strive, "The Hourglass", at one point you can actually hear those two songs layered in the background because they're the themes of his parents. By the time the hourglass was released the two previous songs were about 20 years old so their incorporation into that song after all that time is very impressive.

Oh is this your first time with guilty gear? You are in for a great ride, I'll summarize a bit, Guilty Gear is a pretty old fighting game saga, it is under the mantle of Arcsys and its creator Daisuke Ishiwatari who is not only the creator of the franchise, he is the composer, designer and writer of the IP until today (yes he has been in charge of all that). Daisuke is a fan of music especially rock and metal, his love for the genre made him capture it in Guilty Gear which is a festival of references to metal/rock bands, people and songs from real life, I could mention several but the simplest is that one of the main characters was called Frederick and the thing he likes the most is his album "Sheer Heart Attack" by Queen (in fact in some songs of Guilty Gear you find influences from Queen). The ones who sing the ost of Strive and some songs of old games is Naoki and as a novelty in Strive Aisha sings for some themes. About the ost of strive, it's the first time that Guilty Gear makes that all the character themes are vocal, in the old games most of the ost is instrumental except for some themes (believe me you should listen after strive, to the old tracks, Daisuke has made timeless gems). In strive as you have noticed are songs that try to review the current motivations and history of the characters, many are motivational because quite a few characters have been through a lot (the history of Guilty gear is extensive). As you loved the songs you heard you will have a great time discovering the large number of songs that the entire franchise has. And also after Guilty Gear you have Blazblue (another fighting game from Arcsys) where Daisuke is composer.

Man can't get enough of people discovering the guilty gear soundtrack! I'm glad you took such a liking to roar of the spark, as its one of my personal favorites as well. As a bonus fact: the solo that starts at 21:24 featured in this video is in fact a callback to the characters theme from previous games. Check out holy orders (be just or be dead) if you wanna hear that one. But seriously, As if it needed to get any better. It's an amazing song on it's own merit, but also has some extra spice for those who played the old games. Cheers mate.

The shadow entities name is Eddie he is a forbidden beast and is a parasitic weapon that forms a bond with a person. in this case it would be Zato the guy in black. Millia's hair is a similar being which has it's own sentiance and is actually represented as the guttural growling in the lyrics.

So, fun facts about some of the characters; - Chipp Zanuff is a recovering drug addict who was taunt the ways of the ninja, kicked the habit and became the president of a small African nation. - Potemkin was a slave fighter in an authoritarian nation who basically overthrew the tyrants and freed everyone. Of all the characters in Guilty Gear, Potemkin is probably the nicest wholesome character. - Leo was a Crusader who fought in the war against magical beings named the Gears. His theme reflects a lot of his personality and living with PTSD and Survivor's Guilt and in-game, he gets stronger when he drops his guard. The book you see him writing in in some poses is his dictionary, which he regularly updates.

Freak, I cried again with Roar of the Spark. And reminded me how I choose my main, KY.
@Spinelblade
@Spinelblade Жыл бұрын
Ky particularly does have some religious aspects to a lot of his designs, as he was a member the Sacred Order of Holy Knights in his youth, and fought to defend humanity from monstrous creatures known as Gears in a war called the crusades (one of his older themes was called "Holy Orders (Be Just or Be Dead)"). Ky often came across as somewhat fanatical at times during the earlier games, but the newer games show how he has grown into a position of understanding and leadership, where he wants to create a better world for everyone. This at the same time as he is beginning a famiily who he has grown to love, which has lead him to strive towards creating an even better future. One fun description I heard from another person listening to Millia's theme that I feel is very accurate is that they said it was "A love song for yourself" and I think that is a pretty good way to look at it. Also the shadow you saw there belonged to another character named Zato-ONE, who is heavily tied to Millia in the story and also has a badass theme called Let Me Carve Your Way. To add on, I will also say that Ky's theme is my favorite, but I do REALLY want you to check out more Guilty Gear themes. My suggestions would be Drift, The Circle, and Ride the Fire (which is actually from an earlier game, but is still a vocal character theme, maybe even the first one). If you're okay checking out vocal Guilty Gear tracks that aren't character themes, I would also suggest Storyteller, Big Blast Sonic, and Six Black Heavens Guns (these three are also from an earlier game, but still badass).

The Guilty Gear StrIVe OST is the best metal album I had heard in years, because even though it's all original music it listens like a world tour of metal sub-genres. You've got thrash, pop metal, symphonic, power metal, progressive, and even some crossover into math rock and funk rock. If you can you should do a follow-up video with the next few tracks: "Let Me Carve Your Way" "Necessary Discrepancy" "Alone Infection" "Trigger" "Crawl"

Something that might at to the analysis is that all of this characters themes reflect not only their personalities but their gameplay Chip is a rush down character, he goes in aggressively and doesn't let you breathe, he's gameplay is to give you no choice either you find the opening or you get fucked, he also is extremely risk and Reward like cause he has the lowest health in the entire game, he is basically a Poor kid who was a drug addict, that was trained and became a ninja, then he literally became the president of south Africa of another country from there, if I'm not wrong. He takes every chance to do what he thinks is best and that's about it Leo is another rush down but he is also a stance character, if he crosses you over he literally faces his back against you, he wants you to attack him, so he can't retaliate with full force and if he dies for this reason he is genuinely figthing with everything he's got including his life, he has heavy survivors guilt since he went in many wars and survived them all, he wants to die as a warrior and a king, and go back to his soldiers Ky is not the protagonist Perce but pretty much fits the build, he is a goody two shoes that was part of "the holy order" a group that fought in a great war against creatures called Gears, he went to become on of the 3 rulers of his nation because of that, he then meat with Dizzy, a gear, that was actually a nice lovely girl who wanted nothing but peace He married her, had a son, and ended up telling to the world this and stepping down as the king, this might not be the right move, but he is not afraid to do it for what he views as good As a Goody Two shoes shonen protagonist Ky is the most honest of the honest in gameplay, he doesn't have any gimmicks, he doesn't have any weird meter than makes him have to play around like crazy He's just a fighter, who has a bit of anything he needs, a jack of all trades who's game plan is simply adapt and overcome. Potemkin is a grappler, he's heavy, he's slow, he's not that agile, he can't do what other characters do like dash in the air But he's also a fucking wall, he will walk over ignoring your attacks with his armor like a train, grab your ass and throw it like a ragdoll He is not evil nor anything,quite the opposite Potemkin is a Pacifist who wants a happy world, he was a slave and now he is a soldier that protects his nation with all force, he doesn't have faith in GOD as much as in his goal of a peaceful world He's also a super chill dude, he is pretty much a Pacifist who knows he's dream is almost imposible, but he is just not gonna stop by absolutely any reason He also suplexed a BALLISTIC MISSILE AND SURVIVED And Millia, well this might be biased cause Millia is my favorite, she's an assassin, her entire personality and gameplay revolve about tricking your opponent to fuck around and find out, she was basically machine made to kill, but she has a Human soul and can't just kill that part of herself, she wants to feel like a normal person, but everything around her was dead, even the person she once loved became a monster possed by his own shadow, then died by her own hands, and then he came back as a kinda zombie with almost no emotions, the only emotions he had was is a sense of almost obsessive love for her, and she just moved on from it already, she wants to be more normal but she's also proud of what she does, So it's kinda of a curious paradox

Just wanted to comment about Potemkin since he is one of my favorite characters in guilty gear, he is formally a slave soldier/experiment by hiscountry of Zepp until is commander freed him and lead a revolution against the oppressive and slaving government, his song is about his frustration with society and the world as a whole because while his commander who is now the president of zepp has taken major steps and intends on making their country as a whole much better and free there are certain things that they cannot change even in their lifetimes. Potemkin has probably had to do things like oppress the youth like he says in the song in order to keep things in order and while he understands the needs for such things to happen he still hates that it has to be done so he calls himself a silly clown as he dislikes how things are in society but also has no idea on how to make it better so all he can do is continue on and not turn his back on life, to be hopeful and pray that his actions now make way for a better future in his society even if he never gets to see the benefit.

Something to note about the weird mix of influences visually is that, like, it's kind of what people do in the U.S. with Japan, just backwards? Take random cultural bits you halfway understand and do whatever with them because it's all sort of disconnected for you. Japan didn't deal with Nazis (and sort of suppresses it's own WWII history) and doesn't really have a significant relationship with Christianity.

I know you can only do so much in one video, but some how I was surprised that Sol Badguy's theme wasn't here since I think most playlists for the soundtrack would have his near the beginning. He's the character most often shown on the covers of the games and if I had narrow down a main character for the franchise I would say it's probably him or at least him and Ky Kiske are co-protagonists and were rivals and enemies for most of the series history until recently when they put aside their differences. These games are full of great tracks, but only the most recent games have lyrics for all of them.

one thing you gotta keep in mind, is some Japanese think christian imagery is really cool. it's usually censored out on some form or another, but the messiah motifs with Ky aren't unusual. he's a man of God who has questioned his faith. he has been taught things by the Holy Order that turned out to be less than true. regardless, he realized that he KNOWS what is right, and is now trying to change things.

So you noticed in Roar of the spark how it sounded like the same melody as living on a prayer. A cool thing they did with this game is most if not all of the songs have the same melody as popular rock and metal songs. The series is full of musical references and the fact they hid those melodies in the character themes is just such an amazing feat ontop.of how good the songs themselves are.

It's funny to me that you speculated saying Potemkin is probably the strongest character in the game based on his opening bit of his theme, cuz in reality he's at the very bottom of the tier list and widely considered to be the worst. That doesn't make him bad tho he's still a demon everyone else is just better kinda but you can make Potemkin work. Nobody really does what he does so it's not like you're throwing by playing him. He IS in fact extremely powerful in lore tho. He has a genetic disorder which causes his muscles to grow infinitely and at one point he had to begin wearing limiters to prevent him from accidentally destroying everything when he fights. For being just a human he's freaking insane, but despite all that he's also a big sweetheart, very intelligent and friendly and I love him sm 🥺

That is the appropriate reaction to Potemkin's theme. Except the Nazi part, it's easy to mistake but it's more closely aligned with the WW2 Russian officer uniform, which makes sense since his nation of origin is Indo-Russian.
