For me Reaper has been an amazing DAW for various live and studio audio workflows. Hard to beat what it is. I know it doesn’t come with many plugins but I like customizing my sound and EFX rather than using stock DAW stuff. 12 years going strong. Reaper on Mac with sounds from Pianoteq, Roland cloud, VB3, spitfire, and NI. Effects mostly from waves. No issues with my setup studio or love.

I have Studio One 6 Pro and super satisfied with it . Music is my hobby and this DAW helps me to make beats very easy. Ive learned already alot of shortcuts it improved my workflow. I dont need more instruments from Personus and never will buy subscription. I can use 6 version 10 years with no complaining. Anyway i use alot of different plugins from different companies. Studio One is the best DAW for me but the way they want make us to buy Studio One plus is so disappointed . I say Hello to all the home producers like me. Peace out homies 😌 🤙 🤘

The problem I find is that if you buy Pro, you can not get the addons. You can only get them if you have a subscription. If you get hybrid+ after it runs out, you can not access those addons or buy them afterwards. That is quite annoying.

The problem is, if you get the perpetual license by subscription, you won't get any subsequent feature updates for the current version, after cancelling the subscription. For instance, suppose you have version 7.5 of studio one and the sub. renewal date is coming and you decide to cancel it. After a month of cancellation, they introduce version 7.6 with some major updates and a hundred bug fixes but, you don't get a copy of that version unless you renew the subscription. It's absolutely a terrible marketing strategy imho.

My issue is they screwed over the long time studio, one users which I’ve been a studio and user since I think version two. They remove the add-on store and put it behind the subscription so now I can’t purchase any cool add-ons like mix fx Or the fat channel stuff. So basically, basically they took away a feature that’s there to begin with. It’s gonna be on their servers for people to download if they have the subscription so there’s no reason not to still have the storefront on the website that says yes for $80 I can purchase this addon unless they’re trying to screw up perpetual license users that like to own their stuff and not do a subscription trying to force them to get a subscription. And I do think with the way this is heading already. It looks like they’re going to go in the way of avid within 5 to 10 years.

I'm not particularly interested in S1 either way really, but to each their own. IDK...I think I've reached the conclusion that the DAWs (and plugins) cost what they cost and they're either worth it to you or not. I don't like subscriptions, and I don't do any of them...I'd consider it if I had to for some reason. I guess I'm fortunate in that literally everything I use is either a perpetual license with upgrades for the foreseeable future (theoretically for life) or a perpetual license until some major version upgrade, at which point I'll either do it or keep using the version I already own. If I get stuck on a version, I'm sure that eventually someone will come out with something that makes me want to pay for it. I don't think anything is all that precious to me. I like the DAWs and plugins that I own for what they're good at....but literally anything could be replaced.

Me too. I've been using S1 for around 9 years and have bought every major update. And I have calculated that a subscriber in the hybrid model has to stay in the subscription for around 10 years to have paid the same amount as a buyer. This is because for buyers, this total amount results from a degressive progression, for subscribers from a linear progression. Only after ten years is the total sum for subscribers higher than that of buyers. But no subscriber will stick with it for 10 years. So as a buyer, you pay more - and get even less in return. I have now pulled the ripcord and switched to Cubase via the Competetive Crossgrade - and I have no regrets, absolutely none! The workflow in version 13 is just as good as with S1, or at least it's a matter of getting used to it. And Cubase also offers considerably more editing options than S1 and much better stock plug-ins and instruments. Goodbye, Presonus!

This is exactly why I just stick with Logic. It’s just logical. Never have to pay for updates or upgrades. While it may have it’s downsides, it’s upsides far outweigh them, and the cost makes it a no brainer to me. I do know plenty of folks who use S1 and Reaper and FL and Ableton, and each seems very happy. But if you are on a sufficiently decent mac and you want to save money, just use Logic, full stop.

Most mundane friggin workspace ever, but people unanimously said it was serious and the others aren’t so whatever.. John Powell, Hans Zimmer, Ludwig Gorransson, Jacob Collier. @@franciscotoscano9924 So many top producers/songwriters use Logic. Anything FINNEAS and Billie Eilish have made, 90% chance it was produced in Logic, you can see FINNEAS break down the Logic sessions in a lot of videos. So that specifically includes "What Was I Made For" from the Barbie Movie, a session you can find on the channel Variety There are also countless examples with FL. Especially in the genre of hip-hop/rap. Metro Boomin's entire catalogue, including recent work he's on, can basically be summed as being produced in FL, it's what he uses. Specifically, ones you might have heard, Creepin' by 21 Savage and Heartless by The Weeknd. Go back in time a bit and you'll see that Avicii (RIP) used FL for most of his music, which includes Wake Me Up and Levels. Imo Wake Me Up is a timeless top 5 song to me and I liked that era of music so from that alone I don't doubt FL's capabilities Hard to actually pinpoint a hit that was made with Studio One. I'd love to find examples since I'm enamored by the DAW but I can't name any.

It's not really a sub. Think of it this way: you're buying Studio One Pro (with hybrid) and getting a safeguard that you will get the latest version a year from now to own for just $179. Much better than a sub where you keep nothing and better than just buying Studio One a month ago where it was $399. Presonus pissed me off too when they cancelled my sphere sub while I was away and then upped the price by $5 a month if I rejoined. Still you pay annually up front and get to keep a new version a year from now? Yeah it's buying, and buying at a good deal so I'll do it. Life's full of wasted $ on crap that does a lot less for us than this stuff.

I agree with you completely. I also saw the whole video from Barry. It can certainly be an advantage for us customers. But what really annoys me is not the subscription+, but the intention to "force" a subscription. It hopes you stick with it, because there are now a lot of goodies being added this year to keep people happy. I have nothing against subscriptions, but not like the graphics company, exclusively subscriptions. And I want to be able to buy the stuff when I want to buy it, even if it costs a bit more. I am aware that I can keep it after a year. But I want to be able to choose. And Presonus didn't do that at first. Why don't these software companies understand that subscriptions are not the majority? Why did Waves and Avid have to back down? Why do you get a UA Spark subscription for $99 for 2 years? Why does Rolandcloud always offer 2 perpetual licenses? Out of goodwill? Probably not. Not everyone is Adobe and not every customer is a professional earning a living. When will these software companies finally understand that? It is not the future and if it is, it must never be.
@dama3509
@dama3509 2 ай бұрын
I am aware that the offer is fair. What annoyed me, however, is the obligation to take out a subscription. Have you noticed that UAD offers the Spark subscription for 2 years for $99? Every software company tries to offer a subscription model that entices people to take out a subscription, but doesn't realize that they are not Adobe. For me are Subs not the future, because the most don't like this model.

I am a person who has Studio One Pro, and I update with every major version upgrade. The cost is $150. The extra $30 is not worth it to me, plus it is not always a new major version every year. The latest release (6.6) has included a new synth virtual instrument, but it is only available to Studio One+, plus several irrelevant features that make no sense. Not sure why I should be happy about these changes. Seems like they want to look like they are providing a good opportunity, while pushing people to the subscription model.

@@RJEnriquez This is what is missing in the math. It's not a $150 upgrade vs. a $180 sub model as what Johns is calling a "no brainer". Rather, S1 has long had a 2-year upgrade cycle. So, in a 2-year cycle, it is $150 vs. $360. So, you need to make sure that the $210 extra is worthwhile. Now, that said, you could subscribe for 1 year for the extra $30. Also and just as important; I’m running a synced dual-PC system, (AMD 7950X based on the right and a 5950X to the left) which allows me to play and record simultaneously on two separate systems. Also allowing me to use my midi controllers across both systems also. I did no extra setup at aLL in Reaper and the systems flow like a river. Studio One was like ‘You want me to do what??’ Lol Use what works best for you and you’ll have a great time working on music. I hope. Just in case anyone is curious I’m using the Mio XM12 to sync computers and midi gear. Flawless.

Im pretty sure you still get to have your original license for the actual perpetual version. If you are unsure, just subscribe with a different account from the one you already have the fullsoftware so that it doesnt mess anything up. However, please note that when you unsubscribe you lose access to lead architect and the extra content on the subscription. So if you used stuff from there to your projects those are gonna be missing until you renew. Kinda fucked up to be honest, and the extra content is not worth to pay for if you already have a perpetual license. lead architect is a cool gimmick but you can find much better synths literally for free

The hybrid way is a good deal in my opinion. There is only one catch. The new synth in 6.6 is only available in Studio One Plus or Hybrid as long as you pay. So if you use it and stop paying after a year you lose the synth. And you can’t buy it. (as far as I understand it, please tell me when I'm wrong ) So if you use the synth in a session you can't open it probably after you stopped paying the monthly fee. And you have to pay the subscription to open up your old sessions. I’m concerned about that way of doing business. If they make the synth a part of Studio One which you can use when you buy, subscribe or hybrid… it. It's perfectly fine. And If you have to buy it as a add-on it's also o.k. But at the moment that's not the case. P.s. I have nothing against subscription when the choice is there. Greetings Jeroen
@IsaacLeath
@IsaacLeath 2 ай бұрын
It is true that you will lose your virtual synth after the subscription has ended, but I've heard they are working on a way to buy add-ons individually. And you will not lose access to old projects after the year subscription because you get a perpetual license of the current version at the time your subscription ends, probably 7.3 by then. So you will be able to access old projects, just not use the plugins available only for plus members. It's great for me because I probably won't resubscribe, and I don't want to buy a perpetual now, especially since version 7 is around the corner. By getting hybrid now, I'll be sure to get version 7 a year from now. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Zr6AiNR1zJqvk4U.html

This is a tough one. In order for us to get updates on our DAW of choice, the company needs to have a monetary incentive to make those updates. The subscription model does not really solve this problem, as they can take in the subscription income without any incentive to make good progress. I think charging full price for each major update (as though it was a new product every time) is the best way, in my opinion. This means that there's a huge incentive to make the update as awesome as possible, and it doesn't force the user to buy anything that isn't in their budget.

The issue is 3 fold. 1. Perpetual doesn't actually include what's in plus so any so any thing using those features is broken if not subbed. 2. The vsti was excluded from pro perpetual users. This is a new precedent. First instrument since 2015 and sub only. Same issue as number 1. 3. No consideration for existing perpetual users in this model. I usually only upgrade if my computer physically can't run the software (for example Ableton Live 9 wouldn't work so I had to upgrade to 11 at that time). I also use Cubase and it's the same way. I could theoretically be fine using 10, but the new features were worth upgrading to so now I have 13.

Why anyone on a Mac would use anything other than Logic is beyond me. Most Daws do pretty much the same thing. I used Cubase since the very, very early days but once I moved to Mac I moved to Logic. Paid for it once. AND THATS IT. Never looked back. No subs. No bullshit. Just free updates for god knows how many years. I’d probably use Reaper as my second choice. And I’d retire from audio production before I gave Avid a single groat. S1 I’ve never used and have no idea. But it really seems like they’ve become the very thing they set out to destroy…

For the hybrid model...Just be careful NOT to use the fx and intruments that you will lose when your subscription ends, otherwise there will be missing elements in your saved song files. Or at least be sure to completely finish and bounce down your stems to audio if you think you might revisit old projects that use that stuff. That's another way they get ya. I'm still on version 5 perpetual also. Version 6 feature updates were extremely underwhelming, and since i mainly use NI Maschine for the heavy lifting with recording midi (and DAW midi just for finishing touches at most), I tend to prefer recording in Reaper for its intuitive audio editing and mixing.

there is NOTHING wrong with REAPER. It has features other DAW haven't caught up with. It updates at least once a month ...and it's as STABLE as the day is long. Most who whine about it say "it doesn't come with 'free' virtual instruments". That was the biggest reason I tried it in the first place, I didn't want my storage loaded with VSTi' crap. I also heard people complain that it does 'too much' ...now that's a real problem isn't it.
@rano12321

As a Reaper user, the biggest complaint I've seen people make that the lack of pretty UI and intuitiveness which I'd argue against it since everything you can do in reaper can be found in the action list and also lack of loops and instruments which is again would've been a problem before internet but nowadays there are probably millions of free plugins and sample packs.

Barry - great vid as usual. Except remember that the "free" perpetual license you get after cancelling Hybrid - that copy cannot be "updated" in any way. If you stopped your sub and you were using v6.5.2 - you cannot even upgrade apply the maintenance v6.6.0 to it. So - as long as the user is good with NEVER getting so much as a bug fix for that copy of S1 they are now stuck with - I guess it's cool. But I do not come across anyone who is generally good with being frozen in time. YMMV

@@BarryJohns Well - yes however if you cancel on 6.5.2 - you had better hope there is a 6.5.3 - because you do not get v6.6.0 (which of course ALWAYS contains a truckload of bug fixes (usually big ones) in addition to new features. If one cancels their sub and sits on a version - it's now a crapshoot. (Did I quit on a "solid" one? Or not?) Only time will tell. I did finally clarify that IF a Hybrid user quits and gets their new perpetual license (even if it's non-updating) they can parlay that into an "old school" perp license at the usual price of $149.00 - so that is a relief.

It's better to have the perpetual fallback vs most other subs. But it's NFR meaning that you can't upgrade or pass it on. What concerns me more is that their monthly has already gone from 15/month to 20/month, which makes me question if the model is profitable. There will come a point where the monthly sub is 30/month and that'll make the annual near 300/Year. And what do you do with all the plus content if you don't want to be tied to a sub? Most people in that situation would be paying for content and too scared to use it as using any of the included instruments or effects locks them into a monthly to be able to recall their projects at a later date. Also worth mentioning is that Presonus have removed the ability to buy add-ons via their online store, so more is going strictly subscription only. So if you do use something you like, you won't be able to purchase just that add-on. All I can say is thank god for companies like Cockos for how they license Reaper, it's a great DAW and straight up in regards to how and what they're selling.

I switched from Ableton Live to Studio One about 10 years ago after investing in an RM16ai mixer. "The Future of Mixing". Remember that one? Had just bought a top of the range MBP. So what happens? Firewire dies. The midi features promised for the RM never eventuated. Ten years later and now an age pensioner, I just bought an M1 MacBook Air and find neither Live9 nor Studio One 4.5 are supported on it. Regardless, Studio One 4.5, my old MBP and the RM still work fine as a multitrack recorder in my home studio. Leaves me with a choice. Upgrade Studio one for the 'Air' or 'Live'. No I'm not about to start learning 'Logic'. Given my original 'Push' still works fine with the demo version of Live12, I may just stick with that. Especially as I have since gotten into MPC and Akai Force. If there is a demo version of the new Studio One I might look into it though.

For me this is just another example of a good company being bought out by a large corporation or private equity firm. It instantly becomes all about the money and the customer's input becomes less important. I went through it with Avid and moved to Studio One because of it. Now they're heading down the same road. It may be a slightly different road but they're all headed to the same place and that is a forced subscription model. It will take a few more years but that's the long term plan. Businesses want the continuous income stream they get from subscriptions on their books for valuation and they're willing to force their customers into subscriptions to get it.

Maaaaan... For the life of me, I've never understood engineers' update-fobia. Then, recently, I was watching a video--I think it was one of yours--about Macs not being compatible with updates when they come out....and I know, Pro Tools has always been ridiculously buggy....and now I get it. If that had ever been the case for me, I'd be trying to keep my system stable for as long as I can, too! Big time! Do people know that, running literally any other DAW on a PC entirely eliminates all of those stability and compatibility issues? I mean... I run S1 on my PC, and I get every update on everything, plugins and all, worry free. Everything just works. Are longtime Mac/PT users aware that there's a less stressful path?

it's not that simple really, even on Windows it's just a matter of time you get into artificial software obsolence especially with audio device drivers (unless you got RME), latest OS builds may (temporarily) break some functionality too, indeed with Windows you get longer worry-free time, but not forever - even back in the day of early Windows 7 things were mess when apps and plugins moved from 32bit to 64bit, and now recently end of VST/VST2 support in favour of VST3 complicates compatibility of daws vs. plugins again, and few weeks/months from now, Qualcomm pushes some finally usable ARM-based Windows laptops, which will kick in issues similar to what's been going on with Apple's Silicon transition few years back.... my point is - Macs and PCs are computers, not hardware units like analog gear which can work "same" for decades, balance of stability, features, security etc.. in IT is a never-ending wheel :D

@@BarryJohns S1 is increasingly unsuitable for the production of electronic music. And the comment above is right: S1 is old-fashioned and has not evolved with the modern way of making music. The note FX (chorder, arpeggiator, sequencer etc.) have not changed since version 3 and in terms of sound design S1 is way behind. The midi editor is below average, the pattern editor is cumbersome and inflexible. SampleOne has no dynamic modulation options at all and ImpactXT is little more than a simple rompler - not even remotely comparable to GrooveAgent or Battery. Editing the respective sample, for example, is not possible at all, neither time stretch nor time-based modulation or the like. You need separate plug-ins for everything - and then usually from third-party manufacturers. S1 may still be good as a studio DAW, but as a tool for sound design and electronic music, it has been neglected for far too long.

Otherwise, companies will stop innovating once they receive a critical mass of subscribers because they can be sure churn is manageable.
