Ich befinde mich, glaube ich, nach Jahren immer noch am Anfang dieses Weges, was auch daran liegen kann, das ich mich nur sehr schwer von Equipment trennen kann. Leider aber sehr oft dazu neige zu schnell neue Sachen zu kaufen. Die Geschichte von dem Juno ist natürlich genial. Ich wünsche mir auch schon seit einer Ewigkeit mal so ein Glück zu haben. Übrigens, der Octatrack, den ich vor Jahren mal von Dir gekauft habe leistet bei mir immer noch seine Dienste. Das ist auch so ein Teil, welches ich nicht mehr hergeben werde. Grüsse nach Wuppertal.

Excellent walkthrough, thank you very much. I’m recently trying to improve my home studio layout. My one challenge is I have rack gear that I’m trying to incorporate in a more usable fashion. I find rack furniture seems to focus on space efficiency over usability

Very nice and easy understandable tour around your setup and way of working! I'm still fighting every time with audio cables, midi mergers and splitters. Recording is a complete nightmare with today's equipment and working without computer. I appreciate videos like this very much. It concentrates on the everyday essentials of making, composing, improvising music without all the fuzzy talk that is usually presented. Vielen dank Martin!

Martin, this setup is quite ingenious. Thx a lot for sharing this very useful info. I am at the point that I try to work me into the subject of synth and everything in correlation with that. But now I got an idea how I could route all those signals that maybe one time I would produce with my synths (that have to be bought like all the other stuff). Now I only need the courage to start learning (and buying) all this, which I hope will not be to hard for me in the age of 59 and as an absolutely noob to this subject.

Sub +1 great content. I have my studio routed the same as you only differences are that I patch each of my synths when I want to use them, same with my pedals and outboard processing. Dope studio man.

Thanks for sharing! I have a similar approach about using ableton as a central hub although I don’t improvise as much as I’d like to. I always end up in writing mode in the session view. I’d like to have a more free flow of music making.

Thanks for doing this, Martin! I wish more musicians would share the details of their setups. I take a very similar approach, except that I have an Ableton template that has all the instruments already in it. I have a 16-track mixer, so each instrument always is assigned to the same mixer slider, and I like having the physical sliders to adjust the levels in Ableton. I am amazed at how few cables I see! My floor is covered in a rat's-nest of cabling! :) You have a very neat clean setup.

Thanks so much for doing this Martin. As I watch your process I’m trying to think of how I could translate this workflow to Logic now that it has a loop/grid mode with a launchpad pro. But that doesn’t have a screen like the Push. Anyhow, you’ve got me thinking, and inspired, as usual!

Thank you for this great video showing how you make ambient music. I have the Akai Force and I’ll love to make ambient music on it. I use the plug-ins on it because it’s all I have for now. So do you make arpeggio track, pad track, and a bass track? Or would a drone bass (low tone) with pad chords progression(mid tone), with an arpeggio melody (high tone) would work? I’m trying to figure it out the ambient music production. Thank you for your help and response. 🧔🏽‍♂️🙏🏽

Awesome workflow description, thanks :). I’m also trying out different flows for years now and now I’m more or less at the same point: ableton with presets for hardware synths. Still, I feel like missing out on the arps and sequencers of the units themselves, since they are so much fun to use while jamming, also since you have more control at the same time without having to switch tracks in the push. Is that something you still use for ideation before recording, or do you really do everything straight out with the push?

Great video Martin - I am considering a similar setup myself. Looking at probably getting an RME fireface thunderbolt interface. Just wondering whether you are using a Mac or PC and how powerful it is - given you are running plugins on every track in real time

Auch gefallen mir deine Ambient Sessions sehr gut. Hat mich schon durch so manchen "ich Verkabel mein Studio neu" Phasen begleitet. 🙏🏻 Und Neptun ist ein echter Star! Hast du den mal gesampelt und z.B. mit dem Iridium verwurstet? 😁 Falls du mal lust hast, den Argon8 oder den Hydrasynth (desktop) auszuprobieren, meld dich bei mir. I am in the process of building my studio and I am concearned about the length of the audio and midi (DIN) cables from the midi devices (synths, groove boxes, midi step sequencers, etc) to the sound and midi interfaces. Initially, I put 3 meter long audio (balanced) and midi cables in my wish list. But as I plan to have a lot of music gear and to be able to move it around, the 3 meter cables might be too short. I also want all the cables to be the same length, no matter if the respective devices are close or far from the audio and midi interfaces - to avoid timing discrepancies between devices. 4 meters in length would be the sweet spot. Unfortunately the midi DIN cables that I want have 3 m and 5 m in length, and the balanced audio cables 3 m and 6 m. Nothing in between. What cable lengths are you using for your audio and midi devices? Will the length of 5 m for midi DIN and 6 m for balanced audio cause any problems (no matter how small the problems are)? What are your opinions and suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Arbeitest du im weiteren Verlauf im Arrangement View? Wie hast du deine Sounds organisiert (Ordnerstruktur, Init Patches, ...)? Nutzt du ab und an auch Software zur Klangerzeugung? Hallo Martin, erstmal dickes Lob vorab immer für die tolle Ambient-Musik und die guten Erklärungen von dir - das Studio Setup hat mich hierbei besonders interessiert. ich wollte dich schon Fragen wie genau du die Synthesizer alle mit dem Interface verbindest - Mono oder Stereo? Dann hab ich beim wiederholten mal gesehen das die Verbindung vom Synthesizer jeweils mit L und R (Klinke) angeschlossen ist, im Interface belegst du damit ja aber 2 Kanäle also rechts und links - und da stellte sich mir die Frage - wenn du in Ableton Live das Instrument als externes Gerät einbindest - werden hier ja die 2 Kanäle vom Interface angezeigt (Audio From). Ich bin nämlich gerade dabei mir ein neues Interface zu kaufen, das RME Fireface UFX II oder das neue RME Fireface UFX III hat ja hinten schon mal 8 Eingänge per Klinke, damit kann ich meine 4 Hardware Synthesizer direkt anschließen und gleichzeitig nutzen. (DSI OB6, DSI REV2, Waldorf Iridium und Korg Minilogue XD. Meine bisherige Anbindung war über ein Mischpult (Mackie 1202 VLZ4) die Synthesizer angeschlossen und mit 2 Kanälen in das Interface (Roland UA-55 Quad-Capture), hierbei konnte bzw. habe ich immer nur einen Synthesizer nacheinander im Ableton aufgenommen. Allerdings war mir nicht klar wie ich die Verkabelung so durchführen kann, dass ich das Mischpult auch noch für den Mix vom Ableton nehmen kann ohne dass es zu einer Feedback-Schleife kommt (die Boxen sind direkt am Mischpult angeschlossen). In einem deiner Videos hast du mal genau das Mischpult auch genutzt (aber vermutlich nur für ein Hardware Livesetup) - gibt es eine Möglichkeit das Mischpult weiterhin zu Nutzen (ich hätte halt gerne immer einnen Hardware-Regler für die Summen-Lautstärke direkt im Zugriff) - du hast das ja mit einem Midi-Controller gelöst? Und noch eine letzte Frage, ich würde gerne einen Hardwarekompressor zum Beispiel den SSL BUS+ in das neue Setup mit einbauen, macht es dann Sinn den VOR dem Eingang des Audiosignals in Ableton zur Aussteuerung zu nutzen oder erst nach dem Interface (damit die Boxen nicht übersteuern) - aber dann geht ja der Mix damit verloren? Wie würde sich hier der Anschluss SSL BUS+ zusammen mit dem RME Fireface realisieren lassen? Vielleicht Summe extern Ausgang vom Interface zum Kompressor und danach wieder zurück ins Interface (also ähnlich wie beim Mischpult mit dem externen Signalweg)? viele Grüße an dich und alle Soundbegeisterten Kollegen und KollegInnen die hier dem gleichen Hobby/Leidenschaft zur Musik fröhnen :) Thomas

Hi Martin, And thx for making these videos! Could you please let me know if you connect your virus with spdif as well to your interface for proper clock synchronization? I just observed that if I don't use the spdif cable in addition to the usb to the computer for connecting my virus the arp and delays get out of sync randomly and they are simply unusable.

You should include a Kurzweil K2500/2600 on there seeing that you have a thing for digital synths,it's deep like the Iridium if not more,digging your workflow setup very nicely done, congratulations 👏🎉

Xpander, one of the most complicated analog synthesizer in the world. Juno-60, one of the most simple analog synthesizer in the universe (as far as i know). Both are tremendous sounding Instruments. Did you ever checked the Roland JX-8P? BTW: Beside the Moogerfooger at the shelf, do you use any external effects, stomp boxes etc.?

I am trying to move to a similar set up to this, with the external instrument plug in controlling hardware synths in Ableton. It's all working well, but I have to manually select the midi track on my Arturia Keystep to determine with external instrument I am controlling. On this video, though, it looks as if Martin can select that just by clicking on the track his wants in Ableton without having to manually change the midi channel - can anyone please explain to me how this can be done, please? Thank you in advance if you can help!
