Gregory Manchess is a serious enigma to me. He seems to be able to incorporate such modern touches to his designs - I can't imagine how he manages to evolve every 10 years as subtle things change in popular art. I personally know several comic book artists that stopped getting work because their style went extinct - and they couldn't change. I hope my work appears as timeless as his!

I love this video!!! What a talented man! I started painting late in life, after taking care of siblings, children, grandchildren, ill spouse. My hands are drawing stuff and I can't believe I'm doing it. This video inspired me because I love to draw people and animals and heavenly beings. What awesome beautiful work and I am so so glad I got to see this great and well made video. Thank you.

I loved watching this and listening to his story. I came to painting late (61) and from what I hear, it takes about 30 years to get there. Well may-be in my next life and I'm getting a head start now.

It depends on how much time you spend on learning and improving. If you spend 8 hours every day creating work you want to create and actively learning, you'll get very good in 5 - 10 years.

I met Greg in 1987 at the Illustrators guild of Los Angeles. He had several paintings on display for National Geographic. Loved the work! Greg spent several minutes with me sharing his experience with NG, he was commissioned to tell the story of pirates and the battles they had on the high seas. A master painter I must say.

Love your painterly style. People say they want to paint like sergeant but you actually do. I use oils too and I can relate to pulling subject matter from childhood and science fiction. We paint to communicate. We tell our story. Amazed at the volume of work and admire your dedication. Thank you for sharing this clip.

Amazing! 4:25 - He's the first artist I've ever heard of wanting to (and successfully creating) an graphic novel + "illustrated screenplay." Such an inspiration because I've always wanted to do this as well but felt totally alone with the idea.
@graphicsamdw

Hi, and what´s the general idea?. would be great to join thoughts about it. I´m far of this illustration level level, but would be fun explore new ideas. I am also thinking to develop short horror stories, and illustrate them.

i want to do this as well, i love film, and want to portray my work in film form but on paper. maybe i will do a shot list, in story form, intended for reading rather than adapting into a movie. i do alot of art but havent written in a really long time.

@@graphicsamdw I love movies and the story I'm writing plays cinematically in my head. I also feel more comfortable writing in a screenplay format. So I want to illustrate my work as a compilation of shots (as I've visualized them) with dialogue attached rather than continuous frames like a graphic novel would have. Check out Manchess' book "Above The Timberline" if you haven't already. It really is a good example.

It's the 10,000 to100,000 hours of punishing effort to make genius look effortless. The Beatles did it. You did it. I tried for 30 years but failed. You Sir, are the master I always wanted to be! I love your work!

you're contradicting yourself there. is it the thousands of hours or not? obviously it isn't... also the beatles are ok, where's the genius? there's no genius, the concept is flawed. they're good, he's good, etc. that's not what counts, listen to the man!

wOw i was watching while eating some shrimp fried rice and holy shit this man is a Genius. I've been a working professional artist for a few decades but i've never loved it the way some artists do. It pains me to sit with myself for long just drawing, but any way here i am. Gregory is the real thing, i remember some of his art from Omni mag. , i had a subscription for a few years back in the day. Guys like Gregory who put in the hours and have the passion become some of the best - His paintings amaze me, and i'm once again inspired to attempt to make some good art happen by seeing masters like him
