Have trouble using the "endless" zipper, 5mm - to achieve neat corners. This zipper "slides" perfectly, but it is sturdy and cannot be bent at the ends. There must be another method in this case. Such as not sewing to the edges of the fabric. Methods in videos differ, however...🤔🤔🤔(Also, in the method with not sewing the zipper to the edges of the fabric, when sewing the sides together, the zipper teeth are not oriented to the lining, as in your video above, but they goI towards the top fabric😮. So again a different process to learn...)

With the continuous zipper it's slightly different. I'm sure I've seen and done a technique with a continuous zipper where you don't sew over the zipper teeth, and just skip over it in the construction step. So when you sew around the seam of the pouch you stop just before the zipper, hop over the teeth and continue to sew. I haven't sewn with those for a while, but I'll keep this in mind for a future video.

Been sewing for decades, and often "wonky"--wish I had such good tip/explanation as you have for why you stop to move the zip pull! 😂. Well made video & great explanation of what you're doing--and very important --the why! Thank you!

Thank you thank you thank you for showing how to see the ends of the zippers back. And I appreciate you using both cm and inches!!! Wasn't til I started sewing that I began to use metric. It really does make more sense. I have only been sewing for maybe 3 years. Thanks again❤❤❤❤

Thank you, Charlotte. The idea of folding over the ends of the zipper tape is something for me to try. (I have not seen it anywhere else.) Also, you make it pretty clear that I should be ironing at lot more as I construct the bags I make since yours look much crisper and neater than the ones I've been making.

Love your close up view of all the steps for inserting zipper with no dents! I’m going to try it with a continuous zipper by the yard and fold back the tape! Can’t do it on the far end though since teeth have to stay closed
@CharlotteKanStudio
@CharlotteKanStudio 10 ай бұрын
Glad it was helpful! If your zipper has a nylon coil, you can also bend the end of the zipper tape including the zipper teeth at a 90 degree angle and sew over the zipper teeth. That way the zipper teeth disappear in the seam. Not sure if you should do it for both at the start and stop though Might be worth looking into! It requires a bit more precision so I haven't used it much.

Sewing the zipper into the seam will give you dented corners. Much better to use a zipper tab that extends one layer from the end of the zipper out to the edge of the fabric and sew through that instead. See the video MYOG: Zipper Pouch on the Adventure Gear Projects channel for an excellent way to make zipper tabs.

Thank you for a great video. Why don’t you include the lining when you’re top stitching? I would think it would help keep the lining from getting caught in the zipper during use. Also why don’t you stitch edge to edge when top stitching? I like to see the top stitch all around the pouch.
@CharlotteKanStudio
@CharlotteKanStudio 9 ай бұрын
Thank you! You certainly can top stitch the lining, and sew all the way to the edge so the stitching is all the way around. Not doing it prevents extra bulk which helps prevent a dent at the top corners, but you can always experiment and see what works best for you and your fabric. I'm thinking it would make a great video comparing all the different options when it comes to sewing a zippered pouch.

It doesn't keep the zipper out of the lining. The seam allowance keeps the lining out of zipper's way. I have been sewing bags for a minute, so I have learned a thing or two. If you sew close to the zipper, it'll jam things up. Keep the stitch away from zipper, and only top stitch the outer part, not both. You can do both but it'll cause issues.

I’m using the standard zipper foot that comes with all Pfaff sewing machines so it probably won’t work for you unless you have a Pfaff too. Maybe there are similar ones for other brands too, but I’ve exclusively sewn on Pfaff so I’m not sure. Maybe ask a local sewing machine dealer?

Where did you get those lovely leaf straight pins?
@CharlotteKanStudio
@CharlotteKanStudio 2 ай бұрын
They are the "Leaf Momiji Head Pins by Tulip". The price is a bit extravagant for pins though, but they are so pretty! They are on the delicate side so if already bent one, however I'm not too precious with my tools.

Congratulaions! Excellent close ups with great detail and explanation. Love your scissors. Please share where you bought them and make? Your machine is very quiet too? Which model please. Thanks from Melbourne, Australia

Thank you! The sewing machine is a Pfaff Classic Style 1525 from 2003. It's a lovely machine, and I do love the sound, but it probably sounds quiter because I've turned down the sound in the video a little. The scissors are from Keren, but I couldn't really find them online. I've bought them locally. They look great but they are on the heavy side though

@@CharlotteKanStudio Hello again Charlotte. Could you possibly give me more info or pictures of where I could buy those Keren scissors. Where are they made. Are they forged scissors. . Where do you live or could you supply the supply place you bought them from? Thankyou

Mine were bought at a local wholesale company in the Netherlands. Here is the listing with a few closeups of the blade: www.debondtbv.com/schaar-24cm-1st-756420.html?option=56027&sqr=756420 I did a quick search online, but couldn't find the exact version on amazon, but if you look for "keren tailoring shears gold" you'll find pretty similar ones. The size I have is 24 cm. The blade says stainless steel, made in Keren.

I just made one following your video and I love the result❤! I just have one question. Why do you sew the outer fabric and the lining separately? Wouldn’t it be faster if we do the outer fabric + lining together in each side?
@CharlotteKanStudio
@CharlotteKanStudio 10 ай бұрын
That make me so happy to hear! Yes! Great question! it's faster to sew them all at once, and you can totally do it that way if you prefer. However, for a lot of beginners it can be easier if you combine zipper and outer (or lining and outer) first since you have one less layer to worry about so that's why I preferred to show it like that. You can adapt the way you sew it to your own preference, skill level, and how the materials behave ;) I often take an extra step if it makes it easier to get more accurate result, but sometimes I just need to get something done and hope for the best 😅

thanks for your thorough reply. mine turned out really good I am so proud of it. I did an extra step (quilted the outer fabric with grids ;)). next time I will try sewing all layers together and see how it turns out! thanks again@@CharlotteKanStudio

Lovely video. Great technique but i was just a bit surprised (17.24mins) that you show a hole between the zipper and the material? Was that deliberate? Honestly not trying to be rude just confused!
@CharlotteKanStudio
@CharlotteKanStudio 5 ай бұрын
Thank you and great question! the little gap is deliberate, it's a consequence of using this method. There are other methods where there is no gap because the ends are sewn along the entire top over the pouch and sewn into the side seams. But if you sew the zipper into the side seams there is more bulk and the top corners dip. So depending on the look you are going for you have a gap or a dip :)

why 1.5 cms?
@CharlotteKanStudio
@CharlotteKanStudio 8 ай бұрын
Do you mean the seam allowance near the zipper ends? The 1.5 cm is a little wider than necessary, but I find it easier to feed it through the machine because the presser foot and feed dogs have good contact with the project and you have better access to the fabric if you need to guide it. But you can definitely change the seam allowance if you prefer a wider or narrower seam allowance.

Thank you, and I totally agree! I try to make it easy to follow by including close ups and pointing out why I take certain steps. When I learned to sew, I was frustrated when people skipped over steps in tutorials or when details were unclear so it's just my take on what's already out there :)

No. It was pretty much the same. However, the close ups were better and the explanations. I’ve viewed one tutorial and the person’s hand obscured all she was doing. What use was that. 😒

I just didn't see the point of sewing the whole way round and then ripping stirches out for the gap to turn. Just leave a gap while sewing!
@CharlotteKanStudio
@CharlotteKanStudio 6 ай бұрын
Yes you totally can! But I've noticed in teaching beginners that they sometimes find it very hard to tuck in and press the edges, as they still develop their pressing skills. So when you stitch it closed and press first you have a neat crease in the fabric that holds well when closing the gap afterwards. This is just a step that can make it easier for some, but can easily be skipped as I often do when I'm sewing without filming.
