Hey gang! Welcome back to another video, today is a bit of a different project. Today we tackle a dishwasher and sink that won't drain properly! There could be a lot of different reason as to why yours won't drain, but it's most likely bad plumbing! In this video we can really show what a difference having good pipes makes!

These guys did a great job. I just want to mention for anyone coming across this video that, if the disposal ever clogs and fills up, the waste water will go back through the drain hose and fill up the dishwasher. An air gap is important to prevent that. Even if the plumbing code doesn't require an air gap in your area, it's good practice to form a loop in the drain hose and secure the top of the loop to the under side of the sink so it sits above the outlet in the disposal. That way the water won't go into the dishwasher unless it almost completely fills up the sink.

I still don’t understand why local cities don’t require back-flow prevention on residential houses. They are required on every single commercial property for landscape, domestic, fire lines external by the meter and internal on every “hazard” or “potential hazard” . Yet I can almost guarantee that every house hold is far more dangerous to our city’s water as a lot of humans are gross , 99.9% of humans can’t figure out how to screw in a light bulb let alone try and explain the hazards of back siphonage and the potential problems there creating in the house if there water gets back fed into the city’s water. A simple Reduced pressure back-flow on every house main , and laws for commercial appliances such as fridges and such to come with built in air gaps , or DC or whatever protection they can would drastically protect all of our water we all use ...

You can also put a non return ( 1 way ) valve at the disposal to avoid water going into the dishwasher. Some dishwashers already have one but it's quite rare so I'd say better safe than sorry.

That,s the first thing I noticed that there's no high loop, anywho, if you're ever in a situation where they're using an air gap, if it ever and causes water to come out of the air gap, run a 3-foot coaxial through the air gap by removing the chrome cap cover, remove the cover to access the drain tube, through there run the coaxial cable down then pull it out through the garbage disposal side, just reach inside the garbage disposal from the g/d drain side and pull the coaxial cable up and out of the drain and that will clear your drain. Then replace the air gap cover and chrome cap and you're back in business

Since you are not running an air break, the drain hose from the dishwasher should have a high rise loop. Basically the hose entering into the sink cabinet should loop up to the bottom of the countertop and then come down to the connector at the disposal.

I love you! Trying to install a dishwasher that wouldn't drain. I was all ready to go to the store and get new pipes and wanted to watch a video about how to do it correctly. I saw the part where you "put in the screw driver, hit it with a hammer, and take the plug out." Suddenly, it's fixed. The dishwasher works, all is good with the world. Thank you so much.

Just 1 observation you might want to add to the video, manufacturers of dishwashers recommend that you make a high loop for the dishwasher drain hose to prevent the food residue from clogging up the one way valve on the d/w. A hint I found out after reading the install instructions when I got a mildew-like smell from my new dishwasher.

Glad I found this. Usually, I call a plumber but I'm wanting to see if I can fix it myself. The kitchen sink has been slow to drain for a while and I sometimes have to run water through the disposal to get the regular sink to drain. This will usually 'unclog' the drain for a couple of days. I've noticed that it 'gurgles' and an air bubble comes up the regular sink side, after which the sink will drain. Additionally, nasty water has now backed up into the dishwasher. The information and clear demonstration presented here will definitely be my guide.

You need either an air gap or at least a high loop on the dishwasher drain hose. If that sink backs up it will fill the dishwasher with nasty water!

Loved your video. when I had problems I replaced everything. I should say I had my 17-year-old replace everything. O.J.T, "On the Job Training". I thought that why not train my Son on how to do it. I learned by trial and error. Anyway, He replaced the Garbage disposal and all of the plumbing. Plus we removed the Air Vent, Soap dispenser assembly from the sink and plugged the holes at the top with Stainless plugs. Then I had him replace the entire faucet. We installed a Single valve facet with the extendible/retractable spout. Kids are not shown how to work on things nowadays. They need to be taught to work on things around the house. After all, once they have their own place they'll have knowledge of what to do. Love your videos. Very entertaining and informative.

Drain looks good. The main reason your dishwasher is draining back into itself is cuz the hose is on the bottom of a floor.( that's why we drill two holes in the cabinet) The one on the top for the drain hose & one on the bottom for the water & electric. And dont forget 2 make a loop. 2nd trick is to put a small piece of copper in the hose before you tighten down the hose clamps.

Yeah, hose should be elevated above the disposal. If you are doing dishes and the disposal gets backed-up, the water will bypass to the dishwasher. I’m guessing the hose was installed that way because the DW isn’t next to the sink like it should be. The hose probably goes under the corner cabinet. That’s what happens in older homes where a DW is installed after the kitchen is built. 🤨

And Paul, I must say, you and I are a lot alike in that we’re meticulous to a fault. It’s a curse sometimes. Just wanted to say one thing about this plumbing vid. I’d heard that when you have a garbage disposal, you’re supposed to have a diverter, as opposed to a regular ‘T’ so that it doesn’t back up in the other sink. Thanx!

Good video as always! The premise for the connection of the dishwasher to the disposal, initially, was to chop up any large food particles that made it out of the dishwasher. With better tech in the dishwashers nowadays, it is almost not necessary, but I will install the connection given the chance. With an air gap or high point in the hose.

Fun Facts: There are often times blades in the output of a dishwasher and in some toilets too. I had no idea till I discovered it myself a few times, LOL. Micro Rant: One thing I can't stand is when people know there will be someone working in a certain area of their house and the don't clear it of their immediate clutter. Like it wouldn't have taken 2 minutes to put away the clean dishes and find an alternative place to thaw their dinner. It's just part of good housekeeping and being a good host for that matter. Even though the people there aren't guests in the usual manner they are guests in a sense and should not have to deal with your crap, that is one reason how and why people get marked up prices IMO. Great fix, it's actually super simple but really intimidating for someone who's never done it, the plumbing in the wall on the other hand is challenging and has plenty of reason to be intimidated by it. :)

It's amazing that people somehow have the idea that dishwashing powder corrodes disposal blades, when the manufacturers build a drainage port right into the system. People wash their metal pots, flatware and knives in the dishwasher for -years- decades with little to no trouble with corrosion. The dishwasher effluent is more likely to _clean_ the blades off than damage those. I'm glad you now know, and that someone has a widely viewed video showing a great underutilised feature.

Last time I replaced the drain pipe under my sink I too just used a regular Tee. Every time the disposal would run, it shot up into the other sink half. Using a Tee with a baffle to divert that flow downward solves that. That however was a pain to source and I had to order online. Wish the big hardware stores actually carried them in my area.

For the water test: 1st briefly run a little through each sink bowl, then run the dishwasher, and last mostly fill at least the disposal sink bowl then release water with disposal running. The last step is the only way to fully test seals under the sink. It fills all the tube under the sink with maximum pressure and vibration during the test. Many skip or miss this step of leak testing. As for hand in the disposal, the blades aren't sharp but will easily remove flesh. Fortunately they are at the very bottom of the unit. Reduce chances of injury by at least turning off power at switch, if not breaker; or preferably discount power to it by unplugging or undo wire nuts.

The contractor that did two of our bathrooms last year installed those flexible pipes. I knew from watching these videos that they were bad, and they argued that it was “convenient and good enough.” The plumbers they hired also did illegal work on a sewer line, so the clean out had an incorrect fitting (a T instead of a 45 degree pipe pointing toward the street). Our basement flooded afterwards, and they had to hydro-jet our sewer due to us thinking it was clogged. The jet tool went toward our house due to the incorrect fitting, breaking the toilet. Apparently, that whole sewer line was installed so long ago that the city did not even know where it went, and it had also collapsed, hence the flood. (It was an old clay line from 1909 or before.) It cut across 3 of our neighbors driveways without connecting to any of their houses, before probably connecting to the main line at the intersection. They are abandoning that line now, and installing a new sewer line under our house straight out to the street. They are also redoing all of the old cast iron under our house, because it has bowed so much that parts of it are actually at an incline! According to the city, there is another sewer line out of our house, but it does not seem like it is even hooked into our house at all, and there are questions of whether it even exists! The house was previously bought and flipped in 2002. The people who flipped it were obviously not really fit for the job: there were empty beer cans behind our drywall when the crew we hired demoed the bathrooms last year. We also remodeled another bathroom in 2019, (not from the same contractors, and that one was quality work, not unlike the work I see on this channel.) In that bathroom, there was a malt liquor bottle under our bathtub!

Great video Paul I really enjoy the way you take to time to explain why and how you are repairing the plumbing. Paul if they purchased a disposer with a stainless steel smashing drum that would eliminate any problem with the galvanized coating wearing off. I experienced that problem so I swapped out the disposer with one that had a stainless steel smashing drum. 1 1/2 years later no odor and with 1 1/4 HP the disposer never clogs. Also it is vital to create a high loop with the dishwasher drain to avoid backup of the dirty water. One last thing most codes require a GFCI outlet under the kitchen sink. Was that an oversight by the homeowner?

Newer dishwashers have a built-in check valve on the drain side and don't need an air gap. Just loop the drain above to underside of sink and fasten. I would put a stiffener in the black drain hose where it is connected by the gray coupling to the disposer. Slip joint plumbing is for home owners and no real plumber I know use the stuff...they use schedule 40 dvw pvc. If done right the first time it lasts for many years trouble free and is easy to service and repair later.

Only thing is say is to put the high loop in that drain hose to help stop back flow. There may be one behind the cabinets though.

Something I do. I got this tip from a plumbing inspector years ago. Everytime I do dishes, either by hand or use the dishwasher I add a capful of bleach. (The cap from the bleach bottle). A table spoon I was told is all you need to disinfect. It disinfects everything. Dishes sink, and the sponge. A side benefit is it it takes care of all the grime you see, where the basket strainer connects do the tubular piping under the sink. Caution though! Too much bleach can cause issues with septic systems. Septic systems rely on bacteria to break the fecal matter down. So educate yourself on best practice or method. I do not have experience with septic systems. Other then as a child. Garbage disposals. Older pipes. Etc. .

Ammonia is what I put in. It gets the glasses spotless. I'm gonna try the bleach though.

Great video, but it's not generally good practice to measure center to center. Measure top to top or bottom to bottom. It's hard to get dead center and keep it there.

This is an incredibly informative video. I've been through this so many times. My first problem was not noticing there was two separate sections on that pipe wall. One for kitchen. One for bath. I have various extra parts around so when I'd buy the wrong kit I could rig it together. I stumbled on to the separate sections one day and only because I bought the parts at a Walmart this time. They were clearly marked. You covered all that. You covered the bevel washers. The metal pipe in disposal and the connections everywhere. Excellent video. I do have a question though. The dishwasher there doesn't seem to have that backflow drain at the top but mine does but my sink is stainless no hole pre cut. So that drain is right next to sink in counter top. Lately it isn't drain into the sink and its ruinibg the counter top. I have the drain hose hooked to garbage disposal. Do I need that other drain up there? I'm getting counter damage fast. I have cleared dishwasher drain it has pressure. I just know drilling stainless gives me a headache. Dont want to do it because then I have a hole in a formica counter to fix. Can I cap that thing off or what?

Go to your local hardware or big box store and get a stepper bit, (cone shaped drill bit). It will do a very clean hole in any stainless sink. I install r/o systems so I know the first one is scary, my first was a high end elkay but Jesus was with me and it came out perfect. It is almost addicting, just put an overflow in my new stainless washtub. :)

The corrugated plastic drain hoses most manufacturers put on dishwashers can clog too easily. That's the first place to check.

You need to have the hose at the flood rim of the sink or water will fall back and cause your pump to run constantly

Is it safe to remove the DW hose into the disposal and put a snake in to clear the pipes ? The clog is behind the disposal. The flanges are locked . This video makes more sense. I'll watch again.

I prefer to use a disposer outlet kit (the black outlet 90 that comes with the disposer) to prevent back flow into the disposer (as per mfg instructions). Also, the responsible thing to do is UNPLUG the disposer before anyone sticks their hand in it. The blades aren't sharp but they do spin fast enough to bust up your fingers in half a heartbeat.

I don’t think connecting to disposal is allowed in some states. Illinois doesn’t allow it. I’m struggling with old galvanized drain pipe in the wall that is pretty high up and trying to decide if it’s worth it to even keep the disposal. I think it’s caused me issues with the drain pipes being so old. Rumor has it plumbers (ok the plumber I use) hate disposals lol.

Anytime you run a dishwasher to a disposal I recommend having an air gap so you don't get buildup in your dishwasher drain hose.

This is a really great video now I would guess so my scenario is my dishwasher without a dishwasher was broken so it had a new one is it would never dry the dishes were always wet and with the new dishwasher it’s the same thing so would that be because the dishwasher is not draining properly you think and when I looked under my sink the plumbing looks so much more complicated than that so just a quick question
