One correction! The Galcon timer is a 6 zone timer I just only use it for 4! It also comes in a 12 zone version. Yup.

As a 74 year old woman with a weak back I LOVE my gorilla cart . 3 sizes at Lowe's. I have hauled water to plants too far to reach with hoses. Carried soil bags, heavy pots etc. Has a tight turning radius.Highly recommend it when your wheelbarrow rusts through .

Paper pots are great for spring onions, and single plant starting/planting. No one mentions the paper gets all over the farm, they don't break down as what is left beneath the soil emerges later in the season.Thanks for your good insights!

Jessie there is a product as your describing by Stihl it’s for defining garden beds, the blades have a hook in it for that purpose your requiring. Merry Christmas

I keep wanting to read the title as Spuds and Duds. Sounds like a good name for vids reviewing how varieties work for you. :) Oh, and on the microscopy, I love Jim Kovaleski's term: "the microherd." Loved this vid. Good info.

Great video! Thanks Jesse! Both Milwaukee & DeWalt make a String trimmer that uses the same batteries as there cordless power tools. The trimmers have several attachments, i.e. edger, hedge trimmer, tree trimmer & more. I have the MIlwaukee string trimmer & edger. It is just as powerful as a gas trimmer & it runs on the same battery that powers my cordless drill & other power tools.

If your looking to upgrade your vermi system I recommend doing a simple windrow , you can crank out a ton of Vermicast to use for extract drenches & injections. We use a bunch of spent mushroom blocks that the worms love. We also add beneficial nematodes from (soundhorticulture) to our worm system & since you have a microscope now it can be good practice. These are just some thoughts and ideas , thanks so much for all the information you put out Jesse it has helped a ton!

I worked out the best way to motor through to complete vermicompost this year. I use tumblers and put all kitchen waste into it, chopped finely and mixed with shredded paper or card. After 1 month, split into 3 and put into wormery trays [I have 3 of these]. Split wormery worms over all 3 trays. The worms rocket through and make completed vermicompost in weeks. Tip out, add coir if too wet and separate worms and compost, and then fill with the next tumbler's half finished compost.

Thanks for sharing your insights. I was thinking about windstrips but I am way smaller home garden. I cannot get soilblockers because the demand is so high. A product I love for compost spreading and trash removal from a bed is the Lee Valley Tools Power Rake. It is pretty durable and kind of a push pull tool. I have worn one out in a number is years and on my second.

Love your videos, Jesse! And I just started reading your book! So excited! I have been using the paperpot system in my no-till permanent beds at my farm (Nature's Apprentice Farm in ON, Canada) and I have mixed feelings. I think this tool would work best in a system where the beds are perfectly flat and rolled (like JM's after harrowing). My deep-compost beds are a bit more bumpy, particularly after harvesting roots, and even when I rake them even some plants get too buried and some plants are not buried at all in the same pass, using the same depth setup on the transplanter. I am planning on testing soil blocks next year and see how the labour compares. Thanks for everything you do!

Yeah I’ve just had trouble getting them to establish well in my beds but the paper pot is certainly a system with a lot of potential and clearly many growers use it to success. I’m still tinkering so maybe I’ll have a breakthrough one day! Also Same, my beds are not flat and even.

Superb video! You speak very well to the camera and have that conversational talent that makes a viewer feel you are talking just to them. Maybe you should try one of my favorite tools, the sod lifter, for pathway management. It has a halfmoon blade forged with a bent steel rod and is mounted parallel to the D-handle, so it is oriented flat to the ground. It can be used for shallow cultivation, sharpened to cut weeds at the surface, and with its bent handle, easily slipped under vegetation to weed. I have not tried to use it for edging, but I'm sure it will work. It could be shaped with a grinder to create a hook profile that could snag grass rhizomes by rotating the tool 90 degrees and dragging it along the edge of the path. Also, I think you really enjoy saying "microscopy"!

Hands down the microscope with the camera is the best investment of the Patreon funds! Love the few teaser clips. Consider also filming brix refractometer work. (Much smaller investment) AEA's channel has a fantastic presentation by Dr. Dykstra linking leaf brix levels with insect pressure. If you could objectively show us healthier soil and healthier plants (or not), it would set your channel miles ahead of any other.

Great video! I just invested in some winstrip trays. I’m hoping they will work out! I only bought ten of the 128s and ten of the 50s. Still over $200 tho, so I hear you on the price. Soil block makers are quite pricey too tho. Spring will tell, but I’m trying some salanova in the 128 right now. I’m using a germination mix from Berger that’s pretty fine and peat based, so it does hold onto water. So far, it’s pretty good, but to be fair, I haven’t done soil blocks. I’ve mostly used plug trays. What attracted me to the winstrips was both the hard (thicker) plastic and the better aeration. I work at a commercial greenhouse that re-uses hard plastic 288 trays, and some of them are almost 20 years old and still good! So, If the winstrip will last that long (tbd), then I suppose it’s worth the price- if you wanted to do plug trays vs soil blocks.

I appreciate your blunt, no nonsense approach on tools & methods. As someone who waged a two year war on erradicating rhizome grass to replace it with white dutch clover in a couple of living pathways & perimeter, I had to resort to flame killing, 30% ag vinegar, landscape fab, trenching etc... Yes, if only there was a tool. I think only sheep pull up roots to eat?

@@notillgrowers Agreed. Sheep is a bridge too far for this kind of thing. If I had it to do over again, I would first lay down heavy duty landscape fab & trench & then put down the nitro coated perennial white dutch clover seed in small sections. Use flame weeding & spot 30% Ag Vinegar where needed.

I wonder what you would think about using a small power harrow that can be fixed onto a brushcutter. It doesn’t till, the tines turn horizontal, you could use it for pathways or to clear a bed without too much damage to the soil. There s one 10 cm and one 20 cm. The effect would be the same like those small tillers with electric screwdrivers. It can be fixed on an electric brushcutter, so leightweight and no noise.

The tool you seek for your living pathways is an edge redefiner U can out the blade on the edger or weedwacker but it is terrifying I tried to build my own guard but chose not to use it. What did work pretty well was my ego tiller head with 2 tines removed

Agreed, those edge redefiners are an injury waiting to happen! The Mantis with the edge wheel on one side is awesome because the side that is doing the edge has tines that go both ways, thus making a ditch (I actually used it to lay irrigation tubes). But you can bend them all one direction and you have exactly what he is looking for. Only disadvantage is that it works best walking backwards.

And then the true stud!!! The skidger Xtreme weeder. Although not as useful a weeding tool for me, make the BEST edging tools for beds and pathways! Cuts and rips!!!

But a heavy workload, manual tool. Works but requires a strong shoulder set. Faster then multiple electric/gas tools, because it does it's job in one swoop. But requires more energy. I Love it because it's precise. That's the only reason I steer away from electric/gas tools, towards manual tools. More work and precision (and generally longer durability(less money spent over time), versus time/energy saving(and simplicity of instructions with crew). It's up to everyone. I prefer to hard train a crew that knows how to HARD-do things instead of simply training some woofers(I hate to sound over-simplifying of their roles). But, personally, even though they might be competition later, I prefer to train more TRUE stewards of our soil, in the hardest methodology possible, in order to prepare our future generations for their challenges.

Hey Jesse, just wondering if Larry could bend you a hook attachment for the mower. A length of steel with a hook either end, attached it just behind the back wheels so it hooks as you push. Would probably need a handle so it can be disengaged. Heck 🤔, I use a 'ho mi', it's a hand plough for this very job in the garden. I'd not sure I'd recommend using it in the field, it would need some adjustment but something like that from Larry might help you ❤️

Great info! For your pathways, I have the Black & Decker 3 in 1 mower, which is just a weedeater/edger that comes with a wheeled base for a stable cut. It doesn't fix the hook need you have, but it is affordable, light weight and makes quick work of trimming small areas. I'm on the hunt for a stud blade sharpener for my garden tools, would love to know if you have something that works better than the 2 duds I recently burned money on. Thanks!

Have considered using a barrier to hold back the grass? I know it won’t be cheap but the time saved tending your edges might be worth the investment.

For the edging on your pathways, maybe try the Hoss wheel hoe with a single "Sweep" attachment. It slices just at the root level. I run it along the edge of my beds to keep the crab grass back. Or even just cultivator teeth on a wheel hoe or walk-behind etc. spaced with your row width? Not sure I'd be willing to do the jump to living pathways myself because grass and creeping charlie spread here like crazy.

All tools I afformentioned, are EASILY applicable to both the cold and hot houses, and the field. Fewer tools. More uses. Less moving back and forth, less brain powered selecting the right tool, less tool cleaning... BUY MULTI-USE Tools!!!❤❤❤❤

Agree the trampoline is critical farm infrastructure with kids. Funny how they can be tired of working in the gardens but can go jump right after for long periods of time.

I'm curious, can you imagine a context the winstrips would work in? I recently purchased a set of the epic gardening 6-cell and 4-cell trays because I'm doing home scale gardening. If I was dropping hundreds of thousands of starts (aka a market garden) soil blocks seem great. But for me in my home setup smaller manageable plastic blocks work great for starting a week of lettuce or some beets. Maybe the winstrips sit somewhere in between? If someone wants to start a lane of lettuce in a co-op but not for large scale?

I did a vermicompost system using a shallow three sterilize containers. Built two of them and used coco coir, horse manure, and leaves. And they went bonkers especially feeding w watermelon and cucumbers regularly. And have them in the basement. Bringing in the leaves also brought in black soldier fly larvae which freaked me out the first time I saw them. Did some research and then now super happy. However being in the basement has back fired with tons of black solder flies hatching and coming into the house. But now with the volume of worms and the black fly larvae I would like to do a large worm farm in a tub outside. But I worry about freezing the worms. Zone 6b

Right, we're 6b too. I originally bought this small one precisely so I could keep it in the house. We have water barrels in our tunnel so I'm hopeful that + some wrap/blanket will help keep them alive as we expand our worm tubs 😬

@@notillgrowers Also with watching your videos and joss's I did make the investment and purchesd the 1.5" long handled soil blocker. So much faster. Still need to work on uniform blocking. But only took minutes to fill a tray with this blocker. Worth every penny. Still trying to nail my mix

Try the BRD2620 from Echo for your live edges that’s what we use in the landscape field. Expensive but sound like the cutting edge your looking for.

Your help about tools should only be fair as to their proformice. I have clay base soil and I also do some Blacksmit work, My choice of weeder I built a hoe head that is built from a leaf spring from a car.The tip is about 2" wide and 5" death and the tip and it's sides are sharpen and back is about 4" wide . When I mount it to it's handle it's angel is increased several degrees ( about 44 degrees ) but hooks to dig into the soil and cut weeds with less efforts than most other hoes.. Needs little effort to distroy hard baked dry clay. Suggest you might check in a black smith fair such as most states has meetups once or more times a year.

You mentioned side dressing beds with compost with your earthway. First, what is side dressing, and second, that compost needs to be super fine to make that happen, yeah?

Side dressing is essentially adding a compost or amendment to a longer season crop (tomatoes, peppers, broccoli etc). It doesn’t have to be compost but when it is compost I usually use chicken manure because it’s often nitrogen I’m addressing. Works best with meals like alfalfa tho (with less blowing away). Pretty fine, yes. It’s a little slow and can take some tapping on the side of the seeder but it’s a good way to get the amendments under the soil surface for sure.

No, it's a new Rimol tunnel with ridge vent. That's what really taking so long--very technical but also very exciting!

This was a fun video! I'm curious about shredding options. We have access to *lot* of leaves, small branches, and coarse arborist mulch (lots of long sticks). Are bagged mowers the best small-scale grinding /shredding option? Are any of the home-scale shredders worth the price or able to process >5 cubic yards / year? Should I just buy a tractor? :)

I used the Boogie Blue water filter in 20 and not in 21 on the market garden. I cannot really tell a difference besides water pressure is alot less with it. Can you maybe do a test with them to see if they are better than not?

Jesse, I'm curious whether you've tried crimson clover or other cover crops that don't mind traffic so much, besides grasses for the living pathways? Would those be easier to manage?

I have but the grass seems to just take over not matter what (we have really long, hot seasons here so when the clover dies back, something else takes it’s place). I’m still trialing though! Would love to cut out the mowing altogherer.

My favorite tool is that horse shoe hoe - or whatever it is called - perfect for taking out some young weeds and grass without bending over. Enjoy your time off.

I’e never had a mix that didn’t hold well. Any professional mix will pretty much work.

Blowtorch and hammer and fold the back edges of a bush blade over into that lip you want :)

right there with you. either fold over the edge or weld a ripper on to the blade. thinking that keeping the blade balanced will be critical to maintaining bearing and running gear health. i'll give it a try and report back

Hey Jesse! Have you ever thought of trying a Pottipuki or other similar transplanter to transplant soil blocks standing up? Paired with some other hand tools (Neversink zipper maybe?), it could potentially save a lot of time and energy on transplanting. I imagine it would take some experimentation to get right though since the soil blocks could fall apart on the way down the chute?
