More people should consider community college. It's a hell of a lot cheaper. If I were a teenager again, I would get an A.A.S degree in an area I was interested in, do an internship, and let some company pay me to go back for my bachelor's degree while I was collecting a paycheck.

My son is a senior in highschool this year. I had my normal talk with him at the beginning of the school year like I have been doing for years. I asked him if he wants to go to college still. He told me a job may hire him for a internship. He said he can learn with the internship would be better for him then going to college.

That used to be true. I'm an English teacher, and that's always the way I was taught. However, it appears that 'less' is increasingly being accepted in place of 'fewer' for countable things. I don't like it, but we seem to be heading in that direction.

@@adamschoedel8829 The worst one I've seen recently is "would of" instead of "would have/would've." "Would of" makes no sense at all in that context; it's only used because "of" sounds similar to "have" when spoken without proper articulation. You can see there are many English speakers who don't really understand the language they're attempting to communicate with. It's pretty sad.

Is it a coincidence how ignorant those who’ve never been to college are about what college actually is and accomplishes? If you think it’s just about scoring a high paycheck, it’s not for you. It’s not for everyone, I agree. But often the well paying blue collar jobs like plumber or electrician take a toll on your body, where say, engineers can work into their 70’s if they choose. If money is the only goal, overall college grads earn $1mil more than non college grads and you should choose a degree that pays well, over what you may enjoy. I’ve been lucky enough to have both and so my degrees are well worth it to me. Most of the higher paying jobs with upward mobility I see require a degree. But one of the great benefits of a college education is exposure to a wide variety of ideas and opportunities that make you a well-rounded person able to speak on many subjects. That is always a plus in interviews and conversations. Again, if this is not important to you, it’s ok. Last note- my father quit college and went into sales. He’s a multimillionaire and always says sales/business is the way to go. So… 😂

@@vapeurdepisse If you weren't born with a family with real money and power, the likelihood of you getting into ivy league schools on merit alone is pretty abysmal. A little over half the students in those schools are American citizens or permanent residents, and majority of them come from the top 1% income bracket. So how many slots does that leave open for plain good students, especially ones from poorer communities? The ideal is nice, but sadly... the system is not.

This country needs more vocational schools. Massachusetts where I'm from there's prob 30-40 and each school like the one I went serviced my city and the 3 surrounding towns. My younger brother also went to the same vocational HS as me he's 27 and makes $150k a year as a licensed welder working 5 mins from his house at 40-45 hours a week. By your junior year of high school if you can land a job in your trade while you don't have to go to school you can go to work for half of the school year while you would be in your trade at school. I'm a licensed electrician but I was able to secure a full sports scholarship at D1 school where I got my degree for free. I work as a computer programmer for AT&T bc of my degree in computer information systems but I also have my own little 501c electrical business. If I didn't get a full ride to college I would've never went bc of my trade I learned at a vocational high school.

It could be, (and is!) an interesting discussion - so join it! The first point I want us to discuss is that people represent their level of education in the way they write (even if they’re only posting to social media.) You wouldn’t pay to work out with a personal trainer who was fifty pounds overweight, so why would you want to listen to someone’s thoughts about education if they “c’ain’t learn nobody nuthin’ about talkin’ good American.” The problem here is more egregious than it might otherwise be. Sure, human beings are capable of making mistakes; but this one is a whopper and they’ve had nearly a day to correct it but haven’t. Careless writing indicates careless thinking. They teach you that in school. The information is given freely in grade school if you take the trouble to pay attention in class. You can think of me as a “pseudo-intellectual” if it makes you feel better about yourself, but I’m not the one posting a video for the benefit of more than 20,000 viewers. I’d be ashamed to make a mistake like that in front one one viewer and you can be damned sure I’d fix the problem and apologize once it had been pointed out to me.

I think the reason why people are not going to college is because they realize meritocracy is not always the key to upward socioeconomic mobility and upper corporate society. They realize that cultural capital in institutions such as university isn’t the only thing that will help you become successful. Social capital, financial capital, and built up capital helps far more in getting job that will pay you a modest income, median income, mean income and upper mean income. You don’t need a college degree in order to earn more monetary gain their are books that can teach you that as well as certain jobs that can provide that for you. Also just because you get a college degree doesn’t mean your going to bet a better salary

Once, conventional wisdom was high school grads could start earning a living earlier while college students deferred starting a career for a few years. But college grads started their careers at a higher salary and had the prospect of higher earnings throughout their careers. The result would be college grads would earn more over their entire career than a high school grad. The system has been perverted. The American education system must be reformed. The best and brightest high school students, no matter their socioeconomic status, must be actively sought after and offered tuition-free higher education at our nation’s colleges and universities.

You can get the two-year AAS in network administration and security, and then go to a company like Revature, Do their coding Boot Camp which is free, but you do owe them two years of your work life after that. So in four years you are a junior software engineer making roughly $90,000, like my little cousin, and you already have a small portfolio of some real work you’ve done. The sky is the limit. But that’s for a real thing. That’s not studying art history or whatever

The difference between an Engineer, and an Engineering Technician, is that the Engineer learns theory and can readily adapt to new technologies as they emerge. The Engineering Technician learns todays technology, and doesn’t have the theoretical knowledge to rapidly adapt to the new technologies which emerge, and has to be retrained for every advance. I started as an Engineering Tech in my early twenties, and after a decade of work went back to college to get an Engineering degree. It was interesting learning the theory behind what I had been doing for the previous decade.

Apprenticeships should be more widely available in all fields. People are pretty much dropping out of school because they have to work. People who can get otj training while getting their education covered at the same time, is a good thing. Employers want to hire graduates that show their competence. It's not really happening. Colleges aren't churning out graduates that understand what was learned during their undergraduate years.

The problem with not educating as if everyone is going to college is that the people who reject education don't know that correct English would have titles this post as "Fewer and fewer" instead of the incorrect "Less and less". I understand that popular opinion says that the English language is fluid and evolving, but without standard rules to follow we are just speaking jibberish. If every town or section of a city speaks a different lingo, how is the country to be a cohesive union?
@soIzec
@soIzec Жыл бұрын
Considering the words there, their and they're are pronounced the same while words like dough, though, through, rough, tough have all their endings not being consistent, i'd say that the fluidity opinion isn't too far off either. Sure, how words are pronounced and grammar aren't the same, but English is literally a confusing mess in of itself that even people with education sometimes don't know the correct way of going with things. So in the end, yes, "fewer and fewer" is a far better option and more of the correct way of saying it, "less and less" conveys pretty much the same message and is commonly understood.

The sad thing is post high school employment now requires most careers to have a college degree at the least. Our trade schools are not set up like in europe to provide decent alternatives nor are funded adequately. To also be in the trades requires some amount of post school education ie community college or certificate classes at the same time not everyone can handle the requirement of trades jobs. So what is left post high school are low minimum wage jobs that have no benefits or chances for advancement. The education and employment structure we have in america has to be completely reconfigured. How we got here was 50 years of divestment in that structure whereas countries like germany built a multipronged approached to getting people employed in the jobs that suit their needs and skills without education breaking the bank. An educated public with a plethora of job options and alternative means with affordable college as just an option and advancenent in education encouraged either certificates or continued education is vital to our countrys survival. An ignorant populace can be used and abused fall trap to disinformation culture cults wars and unjustified fear easily

I think the the USA, a college degree has a very poor return on investment. The amount of money that you have to put in takes a long time to pay off. In many other countries, you can graduate from post secondary with little or no debt comparatively. You can get a degree and work in a moderately paying job that gives you high job satisfaction. I doubt any US grad can even consider this while looking at their education debt.
