I agree, I am studying CS at Uni Stuttgart. What most people don’t know getting into this degree is how much math they will be doing. I don’t fault them since the only way to find this out is to actually study it. But if you are someone who is thinking about it, you will have 4-5 real courses per semester (written exams, with maybe additional 1-2 projects). Out of these 5 written exams, 4 are some form of math and 1 is something related to programming. Especially the first two semesters where you have theoretical computer science 2, which is by far the most difficult course I ever took.

I would strongly encourage you to do so, even though every uni is going to have some sort of maths preparation course for the uni (we had it for the first two weeks when the 1. Semester started) but you are just going to fly over topics etc, they are going to expect you to have “solid” foundation in high school math and those courses are typically there to refresh your memory.

My experience, observations and opinion: If you want to work in IT, especially in a very practical area, a degree is probably the worst path you can choose. A CS degree is so theoretical, you wont learn enough to be a skilled candidate on the market. I am working in IT for nearly a decade, 5 years in a management position near enough to know the market. I have conducted probably over 200 job interviews so I think I am able to give a good observation about the market. 1.) People getting worse in case of practical skills. People nowadays dont have the interest in doing more than needed for the degree. They do not know what IT is about in the real world being trapped inside of this CS bubble which they think is the holy grail. They do not put the work into being up to date in different practical fields of IT being stuck at the level they learned in university or dont know the relevant stuff at all because university is too theoretical. 2.) There is a huuuuge misconception about CS in general, as you kinda said in the video. CS is mostly about what drives IT but it is faaaaar away from the real world IT. Even though CS has some parts that are relevant for IT, like database design, it is just not enough. 3.) Companies that are not doing research are searching practical skills, not degrees. In the world of practical IT a degree is worth nothing. It is just a certificate that proof you can put in some work to gain knowledge which is the basics. If you dont want to put in the work to learn new things or keep yourself updated constantly by studying new things you will be lost in this area. 4.) Practical training (in germany it is called "Ausbildung") is worth more than a bachelor's degree if it comes to the practical IT. As someone who employs new people I learned that people who did go through a practical training are way more valuable than bachelors students. In a training you learn way more practical skills, often people can learn them already on a job or in internships. Talking to a bachelors/masters degree student and a practial training one reveals a huge different between those. 5.) People getting worse communicating properly. I didnt expect to have this observation but peoples communcation skills are getting worse. Worse in case of quantity and quality. This is something that needs to be fixed asap but I am not quite sure how. 6.) 45k is not a good salary in IT and is not realistic. I dont know your sources but this number is way too low especially for master degree students. My experience shows that fresh master degrees earn 55k - 60k in practical IT. Maybe the 45k is about the research field? If you know excatly what you want to work in in the future I recommend you studying. E.g. if you want to work in AI there is no way around because thats not something you will learn in a practical training. Same applies to research: If you know that you want to go into research there is no way around doing a master degree. If you know you want to become e.g. a programmer, sysadmin, network engineer, cloud engineer and many more practical jobs I recommend you going the practical training path + putting in some more work outside the training to be up to date with the latest tech. If I could start over I would go the more risky way and learn everything by myself focusing on exactly what I want on my own (I am a practical IT guy). I would study 3 years on my own and work on my communication skills. I wouldnt care about having a degree, I would focus on certifications because ceritifications proof practical knowledge. In the end, applying for a job is all about convincing the employer about you adding value to their business. Having the best certifications that are spot on with what the company is doing will be a lot more convincing than someone having a degree with barely to no practical skills at all.

What about engineering degrees? Are they a prospective career to take and are the salaries good. Like Civil Engineering, Industrial Engineering etc...
@maxyoko5 ай бұрын
I can't say too much about engineering since I'm not studying myself but it seems to be a good career path It's highly competitive and tough though

Civil engineering is regulated in Germany, keep that in mind for your future, it's also regulated in most of European countries, so it's more difficult to get into that field as a non EU person, go for non regulated fields, Google them

Can we still do Masters in applied computer science if we are not good at coding but ready to learn ?

You need a computer science or related bachelors to study a masters degree in that field

can i study masters in computer science with a bachelor degree in information technology
@maxyoko3 ай бұрын
If you meet the requirements, yes. You have to figure out if the courses you took in your bachelors degree are enough for the masters. But since it's a similar field, the chances are higher

Yo max is the skills in programming of someone in informatik same as someone in wirtschaftinformatik
@maxyoko5 ай бұрын
It depends on how much you do during your studies. But if you look at just the curriculum, you will do more technical stuff and programming languages in Informatik

Is there any startup program or funding option?.
@maxyoko5 ай бұрын
Some universities have partnerships with Start-up incubators or are very entrepreneurial by nature. Examples are the HM in Munich or TUM, they definitely have start-up funding :)
