I just bought one and it's honestly a life changer from having friends hold on to spools or spooling a line from a drawer or shoe box. I got through a fair amount of reels since I let friends and family borrow some cheaper gear to abuse in the surf. Plus...I have an awful addiction to buying anything new or shiny from Daiwa.

Fisherman's Life right on, it's handy, but tbh for 35-40 msrp it's a bit overpriced, just molded plastic mostly. if the spool holder/tensioner was alloy it'd work a lot better and be worth the full msrp. i got mine practically free though so it was worth the try.

These worked well for snorkeling in St. ur2.pl/2322 Thomas. We used them every time we went to the beach. They take some getting used to and it seemed like I had to adjust mine more frequently than everyone else but I believe it was due to my longer hair. These didn’t fog and drained promptly once you lift your head out of the water. I would recommend spending the little bit extra for these as they made snorkeling enjoyable rather than fidgeting with defogging and leaks.

actually had great success using simple cloth tape for bandages (the white kind) as backing on my spools instead of using mono. haven't had any slipping of the braid and tape shows no signs of the braid cutting into it.

Your short review & demonstration is the best on you tube. Everyone's else's totally sucks. I bought one today at Cabela's in Sun Prairie, Wi. I needed a short tutorial so I wouldn't get frustrated & say bad words. After seeing your vid I put some 8# Suffix fluro on my new Shimano CI4. It worked so sweeet. It's a little bit pricey, but you'll not regret buying the Winder. It's worth every penny. No regrets, built solid. Thanks Ish. I subbed.

I'm going to have to pick one of these up. Right now I've been using the berkley reel system. It's great for baitcasters does doing okay job for spinning reels. The one thing that I have done as long as I remember is to let all my line out the first time I go to use it. Before I start fishing for that day I get to a section of water where no other boats are at and then tie a drinking straw to the end of the line and start letting it out. I do this until I have all my line off and then I stopped. Then I'll start to reel inn my new line wow using my fingers can you believe it to keep the proper tension on the line. This eliminates all twisting on the line. The reason for the straw it helps keep your line straight in the water azure motoring along and it gives you an indication when you have most of your line in. I definitely will give this a try and see if I can eliminate having to let it all out before using.

One thing that confuses me is this… for spinning/spincast reels, should you set up the line spool with line coming off the TOP or BOTTOM of the line spool?

You need to have your line coming of the top of you spool so that it is going on your bait caster in the same direction. Or you will have line twist and bird nest bad in the bait caster.

It should be adjustable. You tighten the top up to spoil bait casters. And loosen it up to let it turn wit your spinners. Sometimes help to start reeling slow to build up momentum with your spinning reel there may be something wrong with the spooler if the head will not freely turn

bought mine about a month and a half ago and used it for the first time this morning to spool up 2 penn 209 baitcaster with 29lb mono, it was a little tricky at first trying to keep the line from unspooling while I was tiring the line to the spool, like anything new to you you just gotta keep at it, once I figured it out it took me about ten to fifteen minutes to do both reels total time, that's mounting them spoiling them unmountung them and mounting them on rods and fishing the line through the eyes both in 10/15 minutes total time, it worked great, the only thing I see they can improve on would be to have a auto winder on it but that's really not nessasery, do your self a favor get you one,,, just sayin

How do you keep the line spool from going all kitty-wampus on the funky spool holder? Seems like they could have engineered a more robust means of supporting the line spool so that it tracks straight on those tongs. It should mount on an axle rather than those ball ends which allow it to go all cock-eyed and fall off.

Braid doesn't care about line twist.One of the things I loved about it.You can fight steelhead/Salmon all day and it will not twist up.I do not use it anymore.Cost me too much money in rods and spinning reels as a guide.Eats rod guides and bends spinning reels.This giz notchy looks easier than my method of unspooling maybe 25 yards in the back yard or down the river bank.Stretch it a couple times then reel up under tension between fingers.Gets rid of The line twist.I will do this stream side if a fish or over active spinner spins up my mono in the field.Said giz notchy co. should pay you for this vid it looks pro!

River rat thx for the info as always. being somewhat noob (journeyman noob?) i found that freshly spooled spinning reels gave me wind knots, esp fine braid like superslick 8, so i figure this gadget could minimize that first twist. i like the idea of walking the used line out and spinning it back after a surf session, I'll try that, should def help. ha you're right, free publicity for them, that's why i watermark my reviews and how-to's now, so if the vid gets copied at least i have my name on it.

Is direction of the bulk line important? arbour knots direction ie which way you got the tag end around the spool?
@ishwithfish
@ishwithfish 5 жыл бұрын
direction does matter. if you can tie the arbor knot so that the main line pulls back against itself (imagine it goes around the spool, through the knot, makes a u-turn and goes in the opposite direction), then the knot will hold tighter.

Hi Ish, I tried this today to spool two reels and the clamps that hold the line spool is not well designed. It keeps on sliding out on smaller line spools. I adjusted those clamps several times, moves them around, tightening the tension and the line spool moved while reeling in. I even used the extra accessories and there was still not enough tension on the line. Just my honest opinion. Thanks.
@ishwithfish
@ishwithfish 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback. I agree the ball joints aren't the best design, and depending on the shape of the spool, the spool can slip out of position while spinning. It happens to me too, and I just play with it until I get it right. A better design would be a full axis the spool goes on, and two bearing supported 'cups' that screw in from either side and can apply pressure yet freely spin. But of course that would increase the cost. Let me see if I can find a cheap diy solution and make an update vid.

@ishwithfish 7 жыл бұрын
+Jay Chino i heard that the vs and vr models can have a bit of a natural hourglass line lay, so to compensate you can lay your backing center-heavy first, and should result in even layed braid spool later. the vsx is a different animal since it has what they call 'x-wrap' oscillation, which is supposed to produce an x patterned line lay which should help prevent braid biting itself. tbh, not sure if that means the vsx series requires special spooling.

Thomas Kuhn hi, thx for stopping by. yes, if you're spooling fluoro or mono, try to spool the line onto your reel in the direction or "curve" it's coming off the line spool, ie carry over the line memory in the direction the line wants to curl. if you spool against line memory, greater chance it'll nest during a miscast. braid doesn't matter so much since it doesn't hold line memory.

so i how do i know that i have the new spool set up correctly on the piscifun spool to ensure that. my spinning reel turns clockwise. thanks for helping a newbie.

if the reel is already spooled with mono/fluoro, i would let a few inches of line out and see which way it's curling. if it's curling with the spool, you should be ok. if it's curling away, maybe respool it? if so, it'll prob be ok, maybe take some off 1/8-1/4" from spool lip to ensure it doesn't 'uncoil' too fast when casting.

Nice, I made something "close" to this one with ripped down 2 x 4's, carriage bolts, 16 penny nails and wood glue. I tossed it when I found one of these for $1.99 at a thrift store which I had to exit quickly. A large male dressed in a mini skirt, make up and a wig tried to follow me in to the restroom.."I got a big fat mama trying to break me.." The Kinks 1966

That is just the funniest thing I've ever seen. People who think you need something like that to perform the simple operation of putting line on a reel- seriously. I've been spooling customers reels where I work, as well as my own, for 26 years. Line twist isn't an issue. It can happen while you're fishing under rare circumstances but not spooling if you simply allow the spool to revolve around something maintaining good tension through your hand . Use a glove if its braid. I've just shown this to my colleagues at work and their reaction was priceless. Fishing is a very mis understood pastime, be very careful who you give your money to.

If you like what you see, visit www.amazon.com/shop/ishwithfish for ALL the gear I use, review, and approve. These affiliate links directly support future content. Gratitude! 🙏 -------- Pro tip: When spooling conventional/baitcaster reels, make sure the new line unspools from the TOP of the line spool to the TOP of your to your reel. This way, any "line memory" is accurately transferred from line spool to your reel. New fishing line, especially mono and fluoro, develops line memory over time, and needs to be coiled onto your reel in the same direction it was coiled onto the original line spool. Proper transfer will help prevent line twist and wind knots later. The video thumbnail and baitcaster cameo don't accurately portray this. Thanks Marvin for pointing this out! Tight lines everyone :)

interesting. for non braid-ready spools, i just follow what the og guys' advice and back with mono, they swear by it when hooking surf stripers. i haven't had a crazy run yet, so i guess i'm just playing it safe until i can vouch for them.

Braid on a "non-braid ready" spool WILL slip. Under tension, the spool just spins under the line...If you don't want to use a mono backer, a small bit of electrical tape on your spool under your grade will give it "bite" and prevent slippage.
@troyjralph
@troyjralph 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, you don't always need mono. Alternatively, electrical tape can be used on the bottom of the spool. But YES braid can slip on the spool if not connected via mono or with the use of electrical tape. However, it predominantly occurs when the spool gets low due to a BIG fish taking plenty of line (particularly if not much tension was used when spooling the reel). It is because braid does not "grip" to the metal of the spool. I have seen it happened to a friend who didn't take their time to learn prior to setting up their gear. So it is NO myth.

none of my reels were braid read but for fre they are now ! take an old bicycle tube and cut bands from it then stretch it over the spool and your reel is now ready to spool up without tape or mono ;)

+kappa . Besides using mono as a backing before adding braid there was another reason for doing this. The fact is very few of us need anywhere near the amount of braid that you can pack onto a deep spool, especially in many freshwater situations. Maunufacturers finally recognised this and the popular shallow spools were supplied with many fishing reels. It's a big waste of money filling a deep spool with fine diameter braid when in reality you might use 70 metres or much less. Especially when lure fishing. So box clever by filling up some of that unused space with mono before adding your braid. That way you can spool up a couple of spools instead of wasting it by filling up one deep spool. If you have the modern shallow spools you use braid only. Huge amounts of line are mostly needed when fighting large powerfull gamefish that can strip of metres of line in seconds. But the fact is few other forms of fishing require industrial amounts of line. Because the braid deeper on the spool remains unused it's a good idea to reverse the line so the used braid goes back on the spool first and the new unused braid now sits on the top. Certain factors like braid diameter, make and type of.braid, as well as the spool design itself can affect if the braid will slip or not. But the main reason is not enough tension when spooling braid means it doesn't pack on tightly so it doesn't grip the spool surface and the lot can just slip. Especially with a big fish on the line. Some maufacturers like quantum fit a wide rubber band on some spool arbors so it can't slip. A suitable sized elastic band will do the same job.
