I lost it when the Dôen fantasy collage started to cover your face, because I recognise these dreams from my long-time obsession with Toast's aesthetic: you're super cosy, but on a beach or in an orchard or in a hammock on the beach or in an orchard; the ocean is there and you are poetic and windswept, but warm; you wear £60 cashmere socks and £200 shapeless dresses, but also chop citrus fruit in your little rustic Mediterranean kitchen with perfectly mismatched crockery. Toast's quality has long-since declined, but the dream is still alive in my daft heart.

Video idea: “if I were to make a makeup collection” where you use the makeup you have to create a “release.” Maybe your release would have an eye palette, 2 lip colors, some cream cheeks, ect., ect.. it would be extra cool if you renamed the stuff too in your “they clearly don’t have a poet on there staff” kinda way

For me perfume has been the thing that I put on no matter what I am wearing or doing. It makes me feel “put together” and even if I am just hanging out at home in my loungewear. The ritual of wearing perfume has such a profound effect on how I feel.

I struggle with overspending and I'm not ready to commit to a no-buy but I appreciate your sensible content about it so much! That idea of wanting to curate a shopping cart vs buying the one thing is SO TRUE. I think the free shipping price points can lure us into it as well. Look how sensible I'm being buying something for $10 more to save the $5 shipping.

My urge to overspend is really rooted in my perfectionism, so I’m vowing to work on that head on in therapy this year. I often feel the overwhelming itch to throw away everything I own, and replace it with its “perfect” version. And that pursuit is exhausting! My underwear can just be underwear!

Y'know, I had heard such wildly positive things about By the Fireplace for years that it took on a life of its own inside my head during quarantine. I finally bought it (sweaty palms and all) -- "smartly" only the 30 ml, whereas when I was younger I would have faceplanted right into the large size -- and even convinced myself I loved it at first smell. But ultimately I wore it twice and sold it online for cheap. I just could not hang with smelling like a burnt marshmallow all day. (And this lady loves s'mores.) I am a grapefruit/salt air/greens person, and quarantine made me think I was a burnt marshmallow person.
@Nopi9

My relationship with by the fireplace is complete opposite. I had heard nothing of it at all when I first smelt it and I loved it instantly and was shocked at how well it really smelt like being by the fireplace. But I couldn’t justify the price especially considering it was an easy de toilette. and 2 or 3 years later I still think about that damn perfume and still haven’t bitten the bullet

I have the Doen eclipse nightgown in pond and it’s been a lifesaver this pregnancy! I tend to gain too much when pregnant but I still feel beautiful in it. Almost like a historical chemise but with elastic. Also.. I keep overheating so thin cotton helps. Quality wise: french seams, hand embroidery, extraordinarily soft cotton. Nightgowns are something I’ve been looking for for a few years now and have no regrets when the right ones pop up.

I've been going back and rewatching your old no buy year content. I did a 2020 no buy, and I didn't break my rules, but when I wrote my rules in Dec of 2019 I planned to do some shopping for makeup and clothes for myself in November and December. And then when my preplanned restrictions were lifted at such a stressful time, I went a lot more wild than I initially planned. Too many sweaters and cozy pajamas to comfort myself, and even lipsticks, for god knows what reason. Anyhow, I want a do-over. And I can have one, cause I'm the boss of my life. I'm doing another no buy in 2021 and redirecting my income toward a vacation. Anyhow, my point is, thank you for speaking so frankly about your experiences and allowing yourself to be so vulnerable even though the internet is so unsafe. Your content has been instrumental in helping me make a plan for how I'm going to turn around my impulsive spending.

I have a large bottle of Britney Spears Fantasy perfume that I picked up on a whim from Marshals years ago. I love how it smells, but never wore it in public because I felt it was too juvenile, uninspired, and basically just not for the person I imagine I am, lol. Since quarantine I have been wearing it and actually really enjoy it. It seems to suit the times and it’s good to use it up instead of having it sitting. I also think that it’s funny that I don’t mind wearing an outfit from Old Navy but I want my perfume to be interesting and make a unique statement. Why have we been conditioned to think this way? 🤔😂

I like your way of framing choices as not being perfect Hannah. I'm somewhat of a minimalist myself but very much a perfectionist and definitely a lover of beautiful things. I tend to beat myself up when I purchase something and it isn't exactly what I was expecting or I don't perfectly love it the way I thought I would. But we're not perfect and the world isn't perfect and THINGS won't change that or make us perfect. I think you touched on that in your makeup and shame video. It's a nice reminder for all of us.

Thing 1: Your Doen description was so accurate it made me tingle. Thing 2: I have learned in quarantine that I actually really do love fashion for myself; I've been sustained by my clothing rentals this year even though no one sees me in the stuff except myself. Thing 3: But oh the loungewear and the bath products! How much longer must I resist? (I'm reminded of when you were away writing, and how that helped -- I definitely need to do better at distracting myself with making art instead of spending so much time on shopping behaviors.) Thing 4: Julia getting you into house dresses has been one of the best parts of my year - thanks, Julia! Thing 5: I have so many guesses about what you'll be doing in 2021 and I can't wait to hear the plan; happy new year, Hannah!

My god that is so much money when you put it like that! I don't like how much I spent on beautiful things this year so I'm on a no buy right now until April 1st and I've decided to try seasonal spending like you talked about a month back. So on April 1st I have 250 pounds to spend and then four times a year I get to spend that much all in one go and then hopefully I'll only spend a thousand pounds in one year on clothes and makeup and pretty homewares. I think a thousand is reasonable but I dont like that I probably spent about 3 thousand this year. Wish me luck!

I understand 100% the idea of it being the experience of having something vs the perfect thing. This year has taught me a lot about object permanence in my life and how not everything is so precious and needs to be kept in bell jars. It’s an expression of appreciation to use what I have and pass it on if it’s not for me anymore.

This year I set a budget for myself and it's been a great success. Shopping is more rewarding when I actually take the time to make choices about what I buy. And I agree with you... it's not that every single thing I bought has been "perfect" or the right choice. However, choosing to budget in the first place has been the right choice and has made all the difference. All the best to you and Joe in 2021. ❤︎

I think the delay between want and buy is so important and something I've taken on board more. So often when I give it time the thing I 'must have' is really me trying to soothe or distract myself, or fits with the 'fantasy self' that you spoke about so well. This concept in particular really struck a cord with me and helped me to look at why I wanted something and where it fit with my current and realistic future life. Some things really were a fantasy self want and others were a growth/change want - i.e., my tastes or lifestyle were naturally changing and it fit with that, rather than an 'I wish I/my life was...' want.

It's so interesting in how you found you were seeking perfection first in the over-consumption of beautiful things, and then in the resistance of overconsumption. I think your loosening of the focus for the year of less stuff, shows progress in letting go of the ideal of perfection in your life, and a shift to focusing on what's healthy for you.

Holy guacamole YES on making purchases in groups. What is the psychology behind that?! It’s such a strong pull that caught hold of me hard during Black Friday, and again recently. My goodness I don’t know what it is but I’m glad to hear someone else put it to words!

I hadn't heard the name printfresh in such a long time, it really took me back to my art school days. They're based in my city and I used to see their job openings for interns constantly. My understanding is that they kept a somewhat volatile design environment with a rotating door of interns whose artwork they use. It was generally understood as somewhere you'd literally be working like a rented mule for "experience". Can't say I'd support them personally. Sadly there seem to be many places like this where artists are used for their ideas and paid very little, if at all. That was about ten years ago. Hopefully they've changed but honestly I doubt it.

That is SUCH good advice/a great lesson to learn: about the amount of leeway you give yourself in your budget to explore aesthetics and also trying to retain your consumer values. I feel inspired! I often use guilt as a fuel for stopping myself buying something eg. Fast fashion, and instead it would be great to have this positive focus instead.

Wow... I am so grateful to have found your channel! I have recognised an unhealthy relationship with "things" in myself and have slowly been working on it the past few years in a similar albeit more disorganised journey to yours. I am really looking forward to checking in throughout the new year to hear your experience and tips. Thank you for the genuine transparency and humbling vulnerability you have decided to share with us all :)

For all of 2021 you should make a point of writing down as you go stuff you want!! Then by the end of the year looking back on stuff you don’t even remember wanting would be so interesting and fun 🤯👍🏻 love this vid ❤️

My no-buy taught me that I really can go without a lot of stuff. And that I can, in lots of cases, find alternatives without spending money. This year I was saving for a specific home appliance. I really needed it, and I did my research to find the perfect one. I already had the money, but I didn't buy it, because I needed to save for more important things for the next year. And after all that planning, I found out that I can go without. Thanks for promoting this message by sharing your experience with us.

I’ve loved watching you the last few years. I can relate a lot, not in style and tastes for what you choose (we are very different in that) but i share a love for beauty and quality. I too turn to spending money for all the reasons you do. For the love of it, but also because my identity clings to it, or because it momentarily makes me happy. Because it makes all the bad a little less bad. For me too, 2017 (and halfway through 2018) have been really bad in spending and not saving. For my own reasons, not even tied to yours. I, too, need more “rehab” and “moderation”. I’ve been better since that second half of 2018. I’m still not where i need to be though. I’m going to do a project along with you for 2021. Mine is something a bit different though. I’ll be focusing on saving a certain amount of money. Simultaneously i will also be making less in 2021 than i did before. Which means i will need to spend a lot less to still save this amount. I will be setting a monthly “budget” for fun, but it will be fluid. Saving goes before anything else. If i need my funds for more important things than “fun”, i will not have much “fun” in that month. If I don’t, i may have more “fun” in that month. But I can’t skip saving. My monthly “budget” is a good indicator for how much i should, on average, be able to spend while still pay bills and non-fun stuff that comes my way. I will document where my spending goes and what i’m saving. Just for me to keep track of my goal and to show myself what i spend my money on. I’ve done the saving this year as well but without actual structure. While i did succeed in my minimum goal (because of decreased income as well as some unexpected costs in the house I didn’t meet my absolute goal - i totally would have, though.) my goal wasn’t nearly as ambitious or enforced. Let’s see for next year if this helps to step it up a notch. Thank you for the motivation. I’ve been watching things on minimalism too, i’m very interested in the “living with less” but i can’t quite relate to having that little. I just want everything i own to have a purpose and be used and loved, without the cluttered feeling of excess and especially visual clutter. But in a small home, even if you don’t have too much, it can soon feel like too much without the space to put it away. You fit my “vision” so much more than minimalists and having you, with so much charisma, talk about things has been especially great. I look forward to seeing your new project for 2021. I hope 2021 will be a better year for us all but also for you personally. A new place, a new business? Whatever you desire i wish it for you.

I desperately need to learn that there are no perfect choices. I either buy things impulsively, or I spend hours and days trying to find the perfect thing. Your description of Doen (sp?) had be literally laughing out loud. Also... The first time I saw your videos, I thought, wow there's something about her that so reminds me of my old friend Chloe who I haven't seen in decades, but who I send a message to once every year or two. She has an amazing life and I'm so happy for her. But it's a lot about your style of speaking, your mannerisms, your attitude, your love of beautiful things and maybe even your actual style, the long hair is a similar color to hers. She always had a perfect body and while she was petite, everything on her is long and lean and perfect. Even your long fingers and fingernails remind me of her. She's even from Portland, originally, and I think you've lived there for a time. I told my daughter the other day, this lady (you) seemed more educated than many beauty KZfaqrs, as you have a way about you, and my friend Chloe is very well educated. She studied for a year at Oxford and went to a mostly girls private school where I lived at the time in the Midwest. The only men there were theater majors, and when I went to her graduation (she was salutatorian of a huge class and will have been valedictorian if Oxford hasn't kicked her in her ass) where she got her Poli Sci degree, I got to see one of my favorite actress from the 80s and early 90s, Annie Potts, as their keynote speaker. You have an English degree I'm assuming since you're a poet. You both love creative men (she married the guitar player from REM and they do a lot of things helping and educating disadvantaged kids in other countries) and just so much about you makes me feel like I'm listening to Chloe. I think you just said you lived in Portugal and she was a student exchange student in Portugal. She fluently speaks Portuguese. Watching your videos feels like hanging out with her, it feels like being at home in my 20s, because she was my roommate for a few years then, she stayed with me while she was in college and I loved her so much I ALMOST moved to Portland with her when she graduated. I'm still kinda sad I didn't, but that was like close to 30 years ago and I think I'm just wishing I had a life more like hers. Anyway, I wonder if you're from Portland because you REALLY sound like her, with the slow and deliberate grammatically correct style of speaking. I wonder if everyone there sounds like that. Lol, that was a tangent.

On the topic of "perfect" choices, I don't think this entirely captures what you started to wonder about at the end, but I recall a subscriber making a comment quite a long time ago along the lines of seeing makeup purchases as "spending [x amount] for the experience of trying this product." The idea that however we spend our budgets for luxury items, we are gaining something experiential, and that this is fine as long as we aren't mortgaging our futures. I don't know if I'm putting it any more lucidly than you are tbh 😅but there are definitely some interesting elements to your half-formed / newly minted thoughts around this. Thank you also for reminding me that I need to set down my 2021 no-buy terms on paper! They're floating around my head atm and I need to put them solidly in writing in the next couple of days.

I often feel the need to make the perfect choice so it's so nice to hear you talking about it, it hits me most when it comes to practical things because I want them to last. I often find it paralysing, I guess it's the paradox of choice because of how big the market has gotten. It's one of the reasons I like getting recommendations or gifts, just so I don't have to choose the specific product, only the type. Also, I have a baby in my covid bubble and I feel you on the want to buy them everything, christmas was especially tough but I limited it to just 5, 3 of which are books.

I still wear perfume at home. I think we should do things because we enjoy it for ourselves and let go of the idea that it's just for others. I have seasonal perfumes for going out and I have softer perfumes for home. One of the ones perfect for home is Replica Lazy Sunday Morning. I also love CK One because the nostalgia of that scent gives me joy . I also love Body sprays for home. These are different from the perfumes I like to wear out which aemre heavier for winter and more expensive. Jean Paul Gaultier is absolutely delicious on a crisp cold yet sunny winter day. I've also been wearing samples of Hermes Twilly and MJ Decadence because although heavy, they're perfect for cold weather. So contemplating whether to buy it once I finish one of my winter perfumes. I love loungewear because I've been working from home since 2014 so I've got an entire shelf devoted to it and another for fitness wear. I have lots of beloved hoodies and yoga pants, tights. I love that more companies are coming out with matching loungewear because that used to be rare to see at least at my price point. There is a certain joy I get from wearing a matching sweatshirt /sweatpants suit and I know I've already worn and washed them a bajillion times so I feel good about it, its function, comfort and value has added more to my wardrobe than any clothing item I've bought with the exception of my outerwear.

This year for me was insane. It was the year that I worked the most (Im a tattoo artist) and was able to finally buy stuff. For a long period of time I was jobless and now Im revamping my wordrove. I have stuff when I have to tattoo (mostly black because if the ink and stains) but now Im able to buy nice and delicate shirts to go out for dinner. For the last four months I'v ebeen buing perfume (one per month) and fewer but nicer makeup items. Im so happy with my makeup collection. I have really nice stuff and recently I decluttered a lot and gave it to my sister (she's 11) and she's stocked. For this first time in my life I was able to buy presents for chistmas and it felt sooo good.. But for the next year I think Im going to enjoy what I have (it's a lot) and start saving for a new chair for the studio. I wish you a merry new year!!!! Thank you so so much, because you helped me a lot with the mentality of "fewer but nicer things"

Your perfume comment, about it being something related to your identity of how you move through the world, reflected something I thought recently. The longing associated with perfume might have less to do with acquisitiveness and more to do with longing to be out in the world as if everything were normal. In fact, I spent my birthday money on those beautiful Zeesea lipsticks for just that reason. I won't wear them until I'm out in the world again, but it's okay. Their purchase gave me some hope that we will again be out and showing our mouths someday. Just as you will wear perfume to waft down the street.

I only recently started wearing my perfumes at home, and I also want to get new ones, but I will wait until I can smell them in person. Scents are so strongly tied with memory, son sometimes it can be hard to to go back to old ones because you associate them with a different person. It's so interesting to hear about your relationship to perfume! I feel like for me, it is still related to my fantasy self, but since I am one of the only people in my life who cares about perfume/has a perfume-sensitive nose, I have always assumed I'm the only one who cares and have continued to wear perfume similarly to makeup 😁 I have been more into learning about fragrance though, especially since I've been listening to a podcast called "Smell Ya Later" that i can recommend for lighthearted but still informative content (including an episode on the recent revival of Commodity fragrance!!!!)
