Fitting an xr6 turbo diff to an na xr6 cradle. Will the rebuilt diff be any good?

In this video i fit the m86 lsd diff i reconditioned in the previous video to the xr6 turbo converted ba xr6 falcon.

Same thing for me Sol,love my car too,part of the issue.But your right starting with an FG XR6 would be more productive than cons.Either which way is good,just like 300 or 500 RWKW.All good with that.One of the better things in life to think about.Good Luck.

Wished i could have filmed it. Things didn't go to plan at the time. Had someone turn up and end up giving me a hand which made filming a bit awkward and then the weather turned nasty and i had to race to get the thing back in so filming sort of stopped

@@waynes323 Its a bit of a handful but gets easier once you've done it a few times. I've done 2 more since this one and the last one i did with a mate and we had it out and back in the car in a about 3 hours. Getting it back in is definitely the hardest part. Best advice i can give is make something up to hold the cradle nice and flat on the jack and work with it and you'll be right. Good luck with it!

My BF NA fitted with a Turbo LSD jams on the side of the rear centre bush, now im buying a turbo rear end, slightly different, turbo territory, ba, bf all same

Are you trying to fit a ba turbo diff to the bf by any chance? The suspension cradles changed in series 2 ba falcons onwards and they have larger bushes with different mounting holes. You have to swap the hats over on the diff. Series 2 ba to fg the hole is in the center of the rear bush and early ba it is offset.

@@stuff7853 Hi, i measured and cut the rear bush case out leaving the threaded part to the body and trimmed the bush case by 20mm, rewelded it back in with the diff bolted in and leveled, fits perfect now

Not a job i want to do again any time soon. Wouldn't be so bad with 2 people and a hoist. Don't think i'll ever go much past 300kw because of the weak rods in the ba barra. Maybe 330 tops.

Thats what i was refering to,maybe along the lines of what i will do,if i can get more income.Refering to engine and trans build,swapping out trans ect.Dont know if i will turbo my BA Futura,or get an FG XR6 turbo to begin with with ZF 6 speed ect.Personally would be more worth doing for approx 500 RWKW.And im figuring later on you can pretty much do your own rebuild,except for machining in block ect.Rebuild and modify books on turbo 400 and C4,C6 trans,and other knowledge out there.Money can be an issue.Abit hard keeping up doing jobs myself,parts ect take money overhauling an NA BA or other cars.Ive heard you say money is a concern,absolutely understandable.Times are tough for alot of us with many things.If anyone doing at home DIY on YT could do this,it would be you.

I would definitely advise going the path of starting with an fg xr6t or a bf xr6t if you can. I only did all of this because the cars special to me and i wanted to keep it. Not because i really wanted a ba xr6 turbo.The 4 speed is not known for its strength and its long gearing in first makes for a sluggish 0-100 not to mention ba motors are weak in stock form. But if all you're after is a nice daily that is fairly quick they're still plenty capable of it without spending big money.

@@stuff7853 yeah I call it easy now. Ford told me it takes them 1 and a half days to replace the bushes. My first time was 4 hours without not knowing what to do.

I’m planning on doing a few things to my ba such as swap out the whole diff cradle for a turbo cradle for stronger cvs then I want to also throw in a trutrac to lock the diff cause open diffs give me night mares while also going 3:73 diff gears any tips on what to get and what to look out for and if it’s possible?

I've got another video on the channel about doing a basic overhaul on the diff. Biggest issue you'll run into is changing the diff gears. It's easy to set the backlash and preload with the screw adjusters but you'll likely have to change the pinion depth which is set by shims. Unless you have a mate that works at a diff shop that can sling you an assortment of shims to try you really need access to a lathe and machine up shims or some other method. I'm sure there's places you can buy them but any i've found have been quiet expensive

Hey mate I'm currently doing the same for my bf2 xt, just trying to work out if the two cast mounting arms that bolt on the diff are the same from m78 to m86, did you re-use them when installing the m86?

I used the ones that came with the diff just because i had painted them up but i did sit them next to each other and they were identical

In short, is the n/a CV joint spline compatible with the M86? (30 or 28 teeth)? Cheers. Edit: I just realised at 16:49 that the axles are not the same. Regards

All good yes that's correct axles are not the same but wheel hubs are the same

Are all the hubs the same? I have fg m86 axles but need to use my na bf hubs for the speed sensor, we’re your hubs interchangeable or did you need turbo hubs?

The hubs are the same. I used one of the na hubs on mine. Axle fits no problems. Fg axles into bf hubs i cant say though, pretty sure b series are different length to fg.

Are doing these upgrades fairly similar to doing on a fg/G6E?

Pretty well identical. Diff ratios will be different, minor differences in axles etc but the rear cradles are near identical between the two.

i've got an fg xr6t ute which and was thinking if i could use the diff from that in to the na fg sedan?

It wont work unfortunately. The diff on the utes is live axle and the sedans are independent rear suspension. You can't swap the internals of the diff over either as na fg uses an m80 diff and turbo an m86.

@@stuff7853 G'day mate, end up buying a hydraulic 15t pulley puller on ebay for fairly cheap. Cut two old brake rotors, use the face plates attached with wheel nuts to anchor the puller on, made a four inch extension for the puller, now can pop axles out the hub without much effort and save damaging the wheel bearings. Great for raiding spares.

@stuff7853 Did a similar conversion, used the rear half from the Territory, about 15mm shorter, put new uni & carrier bearing in, uni was still good from last time it was re-booted. Been using Pedders Xtreme with adjustable control arms, good fun.

Do I need a retune after changing diff ratio. 2006 xr6T manual.

I'm not 100% sorry mate, haven't really played with the manuals. I know with autos in pcmtec software you can change the diff ratios and it has an effect on the behavior of the transmission. Probably wont be an issue with a manual but may cause it to go into limp mode at higher speeds due to the mismatch in expected wheel speed and actual wheel speed. Only guessing though, just have to try and see.
