I know they are wasps, but I never knew they could sting because of how remarkably chill they are. Like, if I see one, I won't go out of my way to get rid of it's existence. I may remove the nest because it's placed in a horrible spot, but that's about all the bad I'll do to it.

Yeah, I've never had any real issues with mud daubers. They're pretty docile. It's the paper wasps you have to watch out for since they can been pretty aggressive. They're called Daubers because their nests resemble Daub, which is a pretty ancient method of building homes out of mud and sticks. Usually seen with "wattle and daub" homes. It was used by native Americans and by the European colonists alike.

This kind of confirms it. Lived in FL most of my life and always knew these were virtually harmless. I really think you'd have to pin one down like that to get stung. I've accidentally destroyed multiple nests before while cleaning and they just fly away. Paper wasps look similar and daubers are often confused for them, and they will sting if you bug them... although they aren't that aggressive either, compared to hornets.

I got stung on the eyelid by one of these as a kid. I found a discarded metal office desk that had been dumped for some reason, in good condition to. I was curious if anything was inside of it...and yep! As soon as I opened a drawer one flew right at me and hit my eye. Reflex saved me and it stung my eyelid. I didn't even feel the sting itself and it took 10 seconds or so to feel any pain at all. I'm sure it only stung me because I broke its nest and it felt trapped in the drawer or something like that. I didn't stick around to investigate and only caught glimpse of it. It wasn't that a bad sting despite the location. I'd rate it lower than yellow jackets or carpenter bees, but worse than sweat bees. My eyelid was swollen for a few hours and after that initial burning subsided in a few minutes, it was more of a dull ache. I've been near tons of daubers and never been stung before that, or since. Carpenter bees are similarly non-aggressive and my sting there (or bite?) was because it got trapped in my shoe. That cause my whole foot to swell up and I couldn't wear my shoe until the next day.

I wouldn't normally ask someone to deliberately take an insect sting but I'm curious I hear the ichneumon wasp has a 4 inch stinger, but what I want to know is, does the size of the stinger make getting stung more painful than the venom yeild?
@winstonpoplin
@winstonpoplin 8 күн бұрын
The four inch tube on an Ichneumon is an oviduct used to lay eggs deep within dead trees. They slowly work it down into the wood fibers and lay eggs. It takes time to insert and remove it and if you catch one while it has it inserted it can be bad because they can rip it off in panic.

These lived in our summer kitchen years ago. Very passive, non-aggressive, they tend to be solitary which causes them to naturally prefer to flee and live rather than sting and risk dying. These are no fun to get stung by. Have lots of them around the barn, and every now and then when mowing or trimming around it, one will come over and say hi.

I see those little nest tunnels everywhere in my backyard and never knew what they were from until now

Both mark and coyote are freaking nuts. Mark seems to have the pain tolerance of granite.

While mud daubers certainly look intimidating, I’ve always found they’re quite peaceable. They usually build their homes out of the way anyways so I don’t mind them too much

They can be aggressive if you go over them with a lawn mower while they're underground and they can get massive to if they eat alot

I used to play with these when I was growing up. I was always told they wouldn't stung and until this video I e never heard of someone getting stung

I saw them often carrying something but they'd fly fast so I couldn't catch what it was. Usually after that you could hear buzzing sound. Once I've opened door on my cabin and there was big pile of hardened dirt glued onto them. When I poked it a huge amount of small spiders (dead) fell down. It wasn't scary, more like gross, but at least I realized that's what they were carrying all time.around 😁
