Hi John. Awesome silver find. I think that rather than a rainbow the decoration might be a stylized depiction of a 'berlinn" or "broighter" boat. It looked like a boat to me so I googled "ancient Scottish boat" clicked on images and found examples of ancient Scottish and Irish boats roughly shaped like that.

What a great find, decoration on the bar looks like a scene of the cosmos, quarter 🌙 and ✨. If you put them all together do they make a bigger scene? Wonder what the experts say! Wow! Don’t know why but I am thinking it’s Celtic. Fascinating.

The lead needle, bodkin, looks like a ‘nalbinding’ needle, Scandinavian, Viking, it’s worn away where the yarn wraps around it, thought it was for making nets at first but nalbinding would be my guess. Great finds! Fantastic ingot. 👍 Thanks for all your hard work, make sure you look after yourself!

I am no expert but could also be a Roman Field lead “pencil”. Might have had a string attached to a “notebook”
@haylyeah4829
@haylyeah4829 Жыл бұрын
@Zeenat Baer Nalbinding, nålebinding, naalbinding is weaving with a needle, it looks kind of like knitting or crochet but you use a big bodkin like needle and sometimes your thumbs. I’ve never personally tried but I’ve seen it before you make the loops on or between your thumb then weave the needle through the loops, it’s a very ancient way of making fabric, thousands of years old. @Eric Morgan you’re probably right, I’m just guessing, but, I was intrigued by the wear around the ‘needle’ it looks like cord, or yarn has been wrapped or pulled against it repeatedly wearing grooves in it. 😊
@permiebird937
@permiebird937 Жыл бұрын
I have done some nailbinding. I plan to do more, once I get a new drop spindle. I think the hole is rather small for a nailbinding needle. Nailbinding was often done with hand spun wool yarn, which would be near impossible to thread through that tiny hole. Nailbinding needles were usually made of wood, antler, or bone. I think a field pencil is more likely.
@haylyeah4829
@haylyeah4829 Жыл бұрын
@Permie Bird thanks for that insight 😊 I did wonder about the size of the hole but some of the ones I found online had improbably small holes too, I wondered if that amount of wear would make it difficult to use as well. The wear still makes me think it was used as some kind of bodkin, or, it was a pencil that somebody used for a ‘non standard purpose’, like someone in my family, (who shall remain nameless…), would use cutlery as a screwdriver or hammer to open something and leave the evidence for all eternity on it! 😂

Handpumped water wells had leathers that had to be changed periodically. Our old hand pump in the pasture had a set of 5 seals that had to be changed when the leather would no longer lift/draw the water up to the surface. Don't know if they were used in Scotland or not.

John, during roundup at 30:15 (as others have already pointed out) this cut silver ingot looks more and more like a piece to a Bigger puzzle. Could you gather all the other parts and compare the designs? I once commented a smaller piece look like a Crop-Circle or something from an E.T. movie. This last one looks like something from the movie Stargate (1994). I would love to see all the available pieces. I would never leave the field where those cut silver.... :-) ;-)

I think that chunk of silver ingot is amazing and possibly quite important. The designs chased into the surface were clearly done with a set of dividers, which is one of the main instruments of the Iron Age and Pictish iconographies. The punched holes and circles are also indicative of a native design construction. Can't wait to hear what the archaeologists have to say on it. My best guess is that Roman silver is being reused by local people around where you are detecting.

Great finds again John. 😁 The silver ingot has been cut from a hammered ingot. The silver smith would have cast the original ingot in a rough mould, then hammered it into a rod, ( the hammer marks are visible all over it ) that was then cut to the required size for payment of goods, etc. The copper stud/plug/rivet, is from a horse harness and the leather has mostly rotted away from the rivets.

Very nice finds as usual with 2000 year old silver, and the George VI sixpence got eclipsed. You mentioned the King was bombed in London, but he is also the last King to have been in a battle, having participated as a young Midshipman at the Battle of Jutland in WWI. He could only be there because at the time he was a "spare" since the future Edward VIII was the heir. Heirs to the throne are kept away from danger, but spares can serve in the active military in wartime. Indeed, George's younger brother, the Duke of Kent, was killed in a military plane crash in WWII.

Looking at the little lead thing and thinking it is maybe a stylus for writing on a wax tablet. the wood and wax could have rotted away centuries ago but the lead stays, the little indent I could see would be a hole punctured to take a cord to attach it to the tablet. Maybe a gentle broggle with the pokey stick would dislodge dirt and reveal the hole or perhaps a strong quill might be more gentle and finer than the plastic. What a thrilling day and video.
