It's amazing to think that when it cracked open, it's the first time it's seen light. Those crystals were in the dark for millions of years.

@@1ivannthegreat That's really what it is, though. It was a bubble in a lava chamber that never erupted. When that lava cooled an hardened into rock, hydrothermal waters seeped through the empty hole and deposited minerals on the inside making a cast of the bubble. It's like when you make rock candy. 44 million years later some humans came by and mined the rock away leaving the crystal lining behind as a closed shell.

I love this! Decades ago we went into dry fields around y Czech grandother's village and cracked the many geodes (most clearly much much smaller than this one) with hammers, just as my mother did as a kid. There were many (typically sized between a walnut and a tangerine) with beautiful insides - including delicate shimmering topaz and amethyst coatings, not just quartz (tested after we returned home to our country). To this day some of the most precious memories from those visits (I was six and eight when we did it).

The tool is called a snap cutter, and is used to snap cut cast iron drain lines. Fun fact: if the cast iron drain lines are too thin, it can be unwise to use this tool, because it can create a crack along the pipe line where the cast iron has thinned out from corrosion.

My dad picked up a couple geodes in his travels long before I was born, and throughout my childhood they just kicked around in the garage. He said he thought they could be geodes but were probably just rocks. My brother and I asked about them on day and he said, "well, let's get the sledge and find out". We smashed them open and they were geodes like this! They were nothing special to anyone else, but knowing he held on to them for a couple of decades and only checked them out with his inquisitive kids; the moment will always be one of my most treasured memories.
