We take you to a two part mini serious of the Old Bradford College Building on Great Horton Road, Bradford.
Its fulfilled its purpose and now has been given planning permission for future renovation.
In this video we talk about its history and its glamorous opening in 1882 and take you inside into the main hall.

23rd June 1882 saw the school unveiled by the Prince and Princess of Wales - the future King Edward VII and his Queen Consort Alexandra.
The rapid growth of the textiles industry in Bradford, and the steady stream of people coming into the city to work in the mills meant that leading non-conformists of the time felt morally obliged to improve the education of these workers, and a series of lectures and classes at the Mechanics’ Institute was established in 1832.
The school initially focussed on subjects of general education but the popularity of scientific and technical topics, fuelled by the dominance of the textile industries, meant that by 1863, professionally run classes, including textile topics had arrived. The need for a dedicated building to educate the population was sorely needed, and less than 20 years later, this need was fulfilled.
The visit by their Royal Highnesses, who had been guests of Titus Salt, brought great excitement to the city, where thousands gave a hearty Yorkshire welcome complete with flags, banners and triumphal arches lining their route from Saltaire to the Technical School.
The opening ceremony itself was a suitably grand affair, with the Prince of Wales presented with a gold key with which to open the door, followed by a lavish luncheon in their honour. Guests feasted on a six-course meal which included Severn Salmon en Mayonnaise, Chaudfroid of Pigeon a la Royal, Lobster Mayonnaise and a Pyramid of Prawns.
To commemorate the Prince and Princess’s visit to Bradford, a silk panel was produced, showing the building, Their Royal Highnesses and the city’s latin motto ‘Labor Omnia Vincit’ - ‘Hard Work Conquers All’, which can be seen in the University archive, along with a pamphlet detailing the events of the day.

Julie Parry, Archivist at the University of Bradford says: “We are so fortunate here to have these items in our archive. It’s fascinating to be taken back 140 years and see how proud the city was of its journey to higher education, and how welcoming they were to the Royal couple.”
The iconic building on Great Horton Road, designed by architects Hope & Jardine, became part of Bradford College, and recently formed part of the set for 2021 British comedy film The Duke, starring Helen Mirren and Jim Broadbent.

I had the privilege of studying in this amazing building as an Art student from 1989 to 1994. BTec, foundation & degree. Such happy, happy memories. I hope the building is going to retain its heritage & not become the shell for numerous flats?

The old building was my building when I started working there as security 13 years ago. So many lovely rooms I hope you went in the old lecture theatre know as the bull ring. It’s a shame the collage didn’t look after the building properly or use it to its full potential it was a sad state the higher up you got in the areas they had closed off roofs collapsing in dead birds all over very sad. Interesting fact the stage in the hall has a slight incline as it was designed for choirs singing so was not allowed to be used by the performing arts students to dance on as it was classed as dangerous. I could go on and on about that building I hope the new owners look after it and bring it back to life like it deserves.

I remember going through that door to sit a maths GCSE exam probably May 1990. I really can't remember the inside of that room though, Perhaps it was the nerves of the exam.

My partner was a security camera operator at the collage she was based in the cellar of library opposite the main building i think it's at the Ash Grove. she use to work alone atnights and said it was a "noisy" building even when it was empty . I never went to the collage but was sent to barkered rd for my apprenticeship in the 70s

Awwww thank you. You have done it again. I studied Pascal, a computer programming language in the basement of that building. It was grim. It was a night class in Winter and heating was poor and the light was poor too so it probably didn’t help. 38 year ago !!! Eeeekkk thats crazy. I went on to study COBOL another computer language at Huddersfield tech and that was a much better building. Don’t get me wrong I adore old buildings just don’t think the basement was ideally suited to this particular class in winter 🤣. Ha ha as if youve shown me another blast from my past. Brilliant as always. I love that you provide so much detail about places and events you cover in your vlogs. You have a great team. Well done, this is another well presented piece. 😀

My good old college days 1985 ….you brought back some great memories….our class rooms were on the first floor by the way…and it’s an Indian elephant because it has smaller ears than the African one….great vid chaps!!

Remember going there very well indeed did technical drawing there and when I started my Engineering Apprenticeship I did day release in the engineer's shop a bit further up through the arched entryway many fond memories thank you for sharing this would love to see more on the beautiful building I wonder what they'll do with it once its refurbished I think the guy said? It would be a tragedy to lose such an iconic building.

I attended the college in 1971 to study TV and Radio engineering. I went to Hanson Grammar School and ironically was in Appleton class or group.

Brilliant took me back to memory lane 1997/1998 studied there only couple of night a week but that main hall I only went there once to pick up exam results. At the main entrance where the stair case was on the right to that was there a corridor ? If I so I definitely remember in the winter it was a spooky corridor

I worked in the building for 15 years And as you go into the hall and look at the picture on the wall you will find my picture in the frame it's in the window of the picture of the old building,

Spent four quite happy full time years there 51 to 55. A couple of years on the Students Council, including one as NUS (National Union Students) rep, and stood on that stage seeking and getting agreement to withdraw from IUS - International Union of Students - a Cold War communist front. Also many dances in that Hall Look foward to the continuation
