I spent 6 years as a Crew Chief on C-130s from 1974 to 1980. Mine was a 1963 C-130E, with 12k+ hours on it. Been on numerous "Assault" take-offs & landings, and there's not too many things that can compare!!😉😄 What a fantastic aircraft!! And the new "J" models absolutely blow my mind with how they can perform!!🤯👍

Wow!!! Thanks a lot for your service. Em 1974, eu assentei praça no Regimento de Caçadores Paraquedistas em Tancos, mais tarde Base Escola de Tropas Paraquedistas, nunca tive a oportunidade de saltar de um C-130, naquela altura usava-se o Aviocar e o Nord Noratlas , que eram muito barulhentos e parecia que se iam desintegrar no ar. Hoje quando viajo de avião, especialmente daqui do Canadá para Portugal e vice-versa lembro-me sempre desses tempos e vejo como tudo é diferente nos dias de hoje. Um abraço para todos os que visitam este canal. Bem hajam 🫡🫡👍

What you all didn’t get to see is the flares we pop on the initial zoom climb and through the break. The point of this take off is to get away from small arms fire as quickly as possible while limiting enemy opportunity for a manpads engagement.

That's a tricky procedure to fly in a C-130, I would imagine. You really don't want to get slow at any point -- manpads or not.

Is the plane staying in ground effect while you’re low and building speed?

@@joshcarter-com yup. Slightly pushing the nose down (trimmed for climb out) to ride the ground effect wave. Release of pressure on the yoke balloons up and then pull for climb attitude… generally 30 degrees. Can’t push the nose over to stop the climb; negative Gs can cause fuel and oil starvation… i.e. short flight with an ugly landing. So, instead, you roll into the turn and let the nose fall to the horizon. The PIC is watching the speeds at all times in this maneuver because you shed airspeed like a JC Penny sale!

C130 - possibly my favorite military plane. It's not fast. It's not quick. It's not flashy. But it asks, "What do you need done?" And it just delivers in so many configurations. Personnel transport, cargo transport, gunship, -- OK, I'm not great in dogfights. Can I get an F-16 escort? Another is the A-10 Warthog - an ugly and devastating supporter of ground ops. Yes, ugly - that's what everyone who faces an angry A-10 would call it.

Nice. I was taught to fly at RAF Manston, the owner of the flying club being an ex-English Electric Lightning pilot. They had a similar take-off regime - lift off, flatten out, retract undercarriage and flaps and pull back on the stick when you were running out of runway. A bit more dramatic in the Lightning, perhaps, but it's great to see the C-130 doing its thing nearly 70 years after it first flew. A remarkable aircraft. If I had my choice, that is what I would fly.

C-130s are amazing in fact you can watch one land and take off on an aircraft carrier just look it up it's on KZfaq. I know that sounds insane but they can do it

I always get philosophical n emotional when I see military transports…., I can’t help but think of the desperate tens/ hundreds of thousands of these decades…, who have been lifted/ saved from peril/ sorrow by these aircraft.. the mere sight or even thought of them coming… the possibility, the hope…, indeed the desperate of those including special forces teams.. who alone , surrounded… grouped back to back or those individuals who had hoped… I must say.. listening to our RNZAF Hueys perform their final flyover at an ANZAC parade…., I thought to those Vietnam vets….. waiting n straining to hear the thump thump of the blades…🌹 truely angels….🙏

So basically, you get it off the ground, full throttle, retract the landing gear and keep accelerating until the end of the runway, then do a steep climb to get the hell out of there! Oh yeah !

Apples and oranges my man, this is a military aircraft performing a short field takeoff, aerosucre tends to use up every inch of every runway because of loading to the absolute limit and beyond

What is so interesting? It’s the finest and most capable aircraft to ever become airborne doing what it has been doing for the past 72 years. For those who have served as crew, thank you comrades - I’ve bounced all over the Pacific in that bird from 1971 - 1979 and loved every minute of it. I salute you and this finest of all aircraft.

Retracting the landing gear like that while still in ground wffect is really risky. If You lose power and have to land, you're screwed.

Not correct, after V2, one cannot land anymore you’ll have to commit to taking off.

@@zz-nc5kx As per FAA Title 14 - Aeronautics and Space; Chapter I - Federal Aviation Administration, Subchapter A - Definitions and General Requirements; Part 1 - Definitions and Abbreviations; § 1.2 Abbreviations and symbols, V2 is the take off minimum speed, meaning the minimum safe speed take off can be performed with one engine failure.

That was not a tactical takeoff, lingering just above the runway while retract landing gear. A tactical takeoff is for a short dirt or grass field and immediate pull up to at least 200 feet to clear trees and landing gear is a secondary thought. Been on a few of those when younger in my military life, they will startle the heck out of and teach you to tiedown your equipment well.

The Lockheed L188 Electra had similar-not-exact wing and similar-exactly-same engines yet has an empty weight TEN TONS LESS than C-130 Hercules. If you ever ride in a cabin-stripped Electra Freighter with only enough fuel for a test hop - you will think your ass is strapped to a rocket !

That flying museum probably carried parts for the KC390. Dropped them off on a unapproved runway and took off again without shutdown or taking on fuel.
