I have just been listening to the the brand new Analogue Productions Atlantic 75 series issue of David Crosby's 1971 debut album If I Could Only Remember My Name. This absolutely superb new Bernie Grundman all-analogue cut is presented on 2x45rpm LPs pressed at QRP - Quality Record Pressings.
I also compare against my prized 1971 US original pressing which I bought 'new' still sealed around twenty years ago.
You can buy direct from Acoustic Sounds: store.acousticsounds.com/d/18...
or if you're in the UK from The Vinyl Adventure:

So happy to find someone who loves this album as much as I ever did. Bought first album as a teenager in the early 1970´s. Even bought an extra one after a while because I was worried I was going to ware the first one out. Some of the songs are so beautiful and timeless. Best of times and will always be my favourite of Davids music together with the best of his friends.

It’s hard not to gush about this album. It’s unique in so many ways. Interestingly Paul Kantner’ ‘Blows Against the Empire’ is kind of a sister album having been recorded at about the same time with many of the same musicians. But of course they’re each distinct. At the time these albums were being made Graham Nash had a large place across the street from Buena Vista Park, a hill park looking out on the Haight-Ashbury district, which still looks like a village surrounded by trees from up there. Out there o the north-west can be seen the peaks of the Golden Gate Bridge and beyond that Mount Tamalpias (pronounced:Tamal-pie-us) in Marin County. A truly beautiful view. Nash had a recording studio in that place and I have a hunch some of Crosby’s album may have been recorded in Nash’s studio before being taken to Wally Heider Studios. Sometimes when I’m looking out at Mount Tam (let’s say, at about 3 in the afternoon) from the park I can hear Crosby’s beautiful voice playing in my head.

Hi Dave. I thought your magical language when describing the experience of listening to this album perfectly captured the (almost) religious experience that this album evokes, especially that last side. I am not religious but it feels like the nearest thing to what heaven might be like. On that last track Crosby said he didn't create that sound, it just came through him . He swears that His girlfriend) Christine Hinton who had just been killed while taking their cats to the vets was in the room as that song came through him. Stephen Barncard the producer who was in the studio taped Crosby live, no overdubs, no retakes. The whole thing was done in 15 minutes. By the way you did pronounce Mt Tamalpais right ! He used to go sit atop it to reflect on Christine's death and that song is about visiting that spot. ( Its across the bay from San Francisco up from Sausalito ) if you ever go , worth a trip across to go up there and look down on Stinson Beach. I haven't got the Atlantic 75 cut but I do have the Classic Records 45 rpm which runs across four sides ( one side of each of the 4 vinyl's being left blank). I think I paid £30 for it and it now goes for hundreds. I guess the Atlantic 75 will be close , if not closer to the apex of whats possible with this record

Dave, did you ever get a copy of or hear the Classic records 4 LP vinyl of the album ? Just wondered how it might compare. Going back to Mt Tamalpais. If you have a copy of My Morning Jacket's " The Waterfall" album the centrefold photo is a fantastic cinemascope photo of a glorious californian sunset owith the band on Mt Tamalpais looking down on Stinson Beach

Finally someone is giving this the attention it so rightfully deserves. I bought this album when i was 17 and i drowned in it. It was crash course for me with guitars and harmonies. I especially loved the last 4 songs on side two. At the end of New Orleans where the harmonics come in, they always reminded me of raindrops. So beautiful recorded and mixed. I recently have been playing an outtake that got left off the album called Kids and Dogs with Jerry Garcia on lead guitar. Such a huge shame that never made it on the final cut until the anniversary issue.

Missing from the cast is Bob Weir, who always did his 'Cowboy Songs' slot with the Dead. The characters in 'Cowboy Movie' are based on Stills and the rest of the cast you have described. So yes, Croz being Croz:- ''This is how you do a proper Cowboy Tune!'' (Croz played some gigs with the Dead at this time., as 'David and The Dorks'. Bob not in that line up of course). My favourite album as well, ever since I first heard it when it came out. It gets better with time..... Great stuff, as always, thank you😊🕊

As a 54 year old Gen Xer who had Harvest on cassette in my late teens and then discovered Déja Vu smack dab in the middle of the early 90s grunge era, it's criminal that I do not yet have If I Could Only Remember My Name in my collection. I may have to rectify this by splurging on the Atlantic 75 and your review (and personal passion for this record) has inspired me. While I know this recording was part of what is referred to as the Bay area Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra, I've long been a fan of the Laurel Canyon sound. Déja Vu remains a top 5 album for me personally and I've picked up with much interest the RSD Déja Vu Alternates, Joni's Blue Highlights and a few weeks back, the Gene Clark - No Other Sessions. I'm also a fan of Nash's Songs for Beginners which I own and came out in 1971 as well...time for me to fill this gaping hole in my collection. Cheers! EDIT: Moved a bracket...was not fully awake. 😊

I have the Classic 45 and 33, a US org and the MFSL dbl 45. Maybe later I will compare but for the first few listens I will let it wash over me. I am so glad that the members of CSN&Y chose to release solo LPs on 1971 as all 4 are amazing.

Thanks for the review. One of my favorite albums as well. With the A75, there are now three really good reissues: The Classic Records 200g; the MOFI 45 reissue (one of the few actually cut from tape and not a digital source) and the A75. I haven't compared the A75 to my Classic Records 200g yet, but I prefer the Classic Records over the Mofi.

Nice video once again Dave! I just received my AP Atlantic 75 copy of this album and I will be listening to it this afternoon! I do have the Mofi which I do love but if the AP is the best I will be selling the Mofi as a US original and the best reissue is all I need of any album. One thing I've noticed with AP version is the cover looks a bit washed out as if the printer was running low on ink. I've just been re-watching your video to see if your copy is the same but I can't quite tell. The black on the inside of the gatefold is really faded and basically a light grey and nothing like my US original or the Mofi. Also what is bugging me the most is the track listing on the back cover, you can't read it whatsoever. On the Original and the Mofi it is a light pink which is still a little hard to see but it is readable. I can't read a single word on the AP. Is yours the same or do I have a faulty printed Jacket?
@DaveDenyer
@DaveDenyer 2 ай бұрын
Hi James, I had to double check: you're right, the colours are a touch faded out. The inner is definitely a lighter grey etc.

Great review Dave. I agree this is absolute masterpiece and beauty abound. I go back and forth. I very much like the A75 but I also really like the mofi 45. They are both great. The A75 has lower DR numbers (slightly less dynamic) than the mofi. The mofi has such a low noise floor… it is so hifi. I also have the classic 33 as well (it’s ok). I normally reach for the mofi. But this A75 is in the rotation as well. When you show it playing it almost looked like a slight warp. Was that just an optical illusion?
@DaveDenyer

Well-spotted: the video does show the slightest warp. I would often flatten this out, but it's so slight I didn't bother.

Still an absolute favourite of mine. I have a US first edition and the Classic Records 33rpm. Not sure but, at UK prices, I'm very tempted but can't really justify stretching to the AP 45rpm. I do though wish AP could get hold of David Crosb'y's later albums such as Lighthouse, and give them the quality pressing they deserve. By the way in the very distant past I think I met you (maybe along with Roy Gregory) and bought an Onkyo FR 435. It's still in use as part of my study system. Dave (ex HFP cartoonist/ jazz reviewer).

I have the 50th anniversary, AAA by Chris Bellman, that I’ve heard is meant to sound identical to the original and the Mobile Fidelity AAA (no DSD step) 45rpm on clarity vinyl. I’ve not listened to it in a while, I’ll need to give it a spin, but I recall that the EQ is a bit different (definitely more bass) on the Mobile Fidelity. Probably enough copies for me for now 😬

I think the typical MOFI ‘bass’ characteristic would likely upset what is, in opinion, the perfect balance of the original. I mean, that bass is simply perfect!

Classic and QRP (who bought Classic Records) both use / used the name ‘Clarity Vinyl’ for their top vinyl formula. MOFi name theirs ‘Super Vinyl’, but they’re not the same. QRP Clarity Vinyl is (I think) an improvement over Classic Records’ Clarity Vinyl, and it’s clear whereas MOFI Super Vinyl is translucent black.

I don't think there's any debate as to what a fantastic record David Crosby's If I Could Only Remember My Name is. However, it's so curious that you could only compare this new AP 2 x 45 pressing against the U.S. original 33 1⁄3 pressing and not the Mobile Fidelity AAA 2 x 45 pressing from a few years ago. Since it's your favorite record of all time I would have thought that the Mo-Fi release would have somehow found its way into your collection. A direct apples-to-apples comparison between the AP and the Mo-Fi 2 x 45 RPM pressings certainly would have made a much more interesting video; all the "gushing" aside.

Hi Michael, having tried the 4xLP Classic years ago, and loving my original so much, it was only this Atlantic 75 (freshly cut), that tempted me to try it. Around the time of the MOFI release I had tried a few of their other 2x45rpm titles (some Dylan, amongst others) and whilst they certainly sounded notably clearer, to my ears (at the time) I found them a little sterile and hence sold them. I only really started reinvestigating MOFI with the One-Steps…
@michaellord9745
@michaellord9745 2 ай бұрын
@@DaveDenyer I found the Mo-Fi pressing to be absolutely stunning. I do have the Classic 33 1⁄3 and the Mo-Fi blows it out of the water. I bought the new AP pressing but have not listened to it yet. I have almost all of the Mo-Fi Dylan pressings and found them to be quite pleasing and a noticeable improvement on the Columbia original pressings and represses which I also have. But I don't have a world-class rig like you apparently do.

That’s what great about hifi and life - different opinions - I too have jettisoned most of my 201x mofi titles, including the Dylan’s. They just didn’t sound real to me. Most early mofi’s and the Anadiscs went years ago.
