Buddy Holly - this is one of the people Don McLean was writing about in "The Day the Music Died", along with Ritchie Valens ("La Bamba") and others. Buddy is totally classic old rock. Listen also to "Peggy Sue" and any Buddy is great stuff. Jim Croce, SRV, John Denver, most of Lynyrd Skynyrd all died in plane crashes.

Patsy Kline is another great taken by plane. Early artist didn't just tour alone. Promoters would create entire show line ups and send them out by bus. These caravans could be out for months doing 4 or 5 shows a week. Early acts could be on the road hundreds of days a year.

Reading the other great comments about Buddy reminds me that he achieved all of his professional achievements in the span of 18 months. He was only 23 when he died. In that short time he managed to change music forever. He was a pioneer in so many ways; not only writing his own songs, but the instruments in the band, the techniques used to record the tracks, and using strings in a rock-n-roll song. With all of the musicians he inspired over the years we owe him a debit of gratitude for making our world a better place. Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened. RIP Buddy

I was born in Lubbock and still live here. A $158 million dollar, world class performance arts venue, The Buddy Holly Hall, was opened here two years ago, which includes a great restaurant, Rave On. Buddy is buried here and his grave, museum, and the hall attract visitors from all over the world. For a relatively small town, around 260k, we get many great entertainers just because of Buddy. Elton John, Paul McCartney to name a few. Sir Paul apologized for being late to the concert due to a visit to the cemetery. Buddy was not with us long, but is influence is indisputable.

Buddy was one of the first to write and produce his own music. Back in the day, artists sang songs from their record company's catalog. Buddy was revolutionary and could've 'repelled the British invasion' had he not died in 1959. A couple of my Buddy Holly faves (other than the most known songs) are True Love Ways, It Doesn't Matter Anymore, and Not Fade Away.

It wasn't just Buddy Holly's music that was such an influence on those that followed him. He was one of the first who wrote and performed his own music and the configuration of the band was an influence as well. The Crickets pioneered what became a standard R&R quartet: lead guitar, rhythm guitar, bass and drums. The Beatles salute to the Crickets was right there in their name, one kind of insect for another. One of the best love songs ever was Holly's True Love Ways.

Buddy's music relates even with today's music. His friend, protege, and band mate at the end was Waylon Jennings. Waylon started the Outlaw Country movement with Willie Nelson. Much of the rougher edged country today is direct from that making them third generation from Buddy. Buddy was one of the greatest innovators ever in either genre. Watch "The Buddy Holly Story" and you'll understand how great his impact really was. P.S. Watch "La Bamba" as a follow up movie as it is the story of Ritchie Valens. Ritchie and the Big Bopper we're the other two artists on the plane with Buddy when it crashed in Clear Lake, Iowa.

Buddy only released one album and a handful of hit singles before he died. But if you listen to all the songs he recorded that weren't released, you can hear that he was already interested in exploring the limits of this new musical form called rock and roll. Who knows how much more he had to give that we lost the day the music died. Fun story: when Elvis was first getting popular, you could book him to play a concert for $100 a night. So a promoter in Texas booked him to play five shows in five different Texas cities in one week - big money in the mid 50s. And at two different shows that week, two young men saw Elvis perform and decided to give music a try. Those two men were Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison. We owe that concert promoter, and Elvis, so much.

The Beatles were HUGE Buddy Holly fans. Paul McCartney said: “I still like Buddy's vocal style. And his writing. Buddy Holly had a lot of big hits in his short time on Earth. "Rave On" would be my choice for his next song to react to. It's a much more driving rock and roll sound and reminiscent of the sound that he helped inspire that came out of the early British invasion of the 60's. Also "Not Fade Away" which the Rolling Stones covered early in their career. Also "Everyday" "Maybe Bayby" "It's So Easy to Fall in Love" and "Peggy Sue". My favorite is "True Love Ways" his experimental ballad which he tried to right a song beyond the "three chords" in standard rock and roll songs of the time. It's a beautiful love sing and one of the greatest in the rock and roll era. And yes, he was one of the pioneers who helped to evolve the sound of rock and roll.

Buddy Holly was definitely a pioneer of early rock and roll. Back in the 50s and early 60s, most R&R bands dressed very nicely in suit and tie. If you look at images of all early R&R artists, Elvis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, the Beatles, and even the Rolling Stones, you will see them dressed very nicely.

He was one of the first White artist that played at the Apollo Theater. Paul McCartney owns the song catalog of Buddy Holly.

Buddy Holly was a pioneer rock and roller. Combing rock, rockabilly, and Texas twang with his amazing song writing ability. The man wrote hit after hit and is remembered as one of the greatest. The Beatles say Buddy Holly was one of their biggest influences. Thank you for your reaction video and the respect that you showed to him. His backup band The Crickets, actually stayed in music for awhile and did several guest appearances with other artists.

Buddy Holly was a true pioneer both as a musician and a songwriter. This band was the blueprint the Beatles used. The stand-up bass was replaced by an electric bass. Lennon and McCartney both site Buddy as a huge influence making them not just want to be songwriters and perform their own material (which wasn't really done when Buddy was doing it, nor when the Beatles were first starting to do it). Also Buddy Holly really should be the music you learn the jitterbug to. Try Rave On and Peggy Sue for songs next.

"That'll Be the Day" hit #1 on the Billboard's Hot 100 in May 1957 - and also shot to #2 on Billboard's Rhythm and Blues chart. That could explain why Holly and his band - still being called the Crickets - (there was a little misconception that they were black) & they were the first white act to be booked into Harlem's famed Apollo Theater

Back in the 50's I discovered Rock & Roll, and started with 5 very specific people for me: Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran and, of course Buddy Holly. I bought every 45 any of them released. My allegiance moved back and forth between all of them, but over the years settled down to Buddy and Jerry Lee. Buddy's sudden death broke my heart. Great reaction!

In the late 50s, a lot of bands dressed up for TV and concerts. His glasses were a huge fashion inspo, not to mention his skill as a singer/performer/songwriter. I find his sign definitely country tinged, but he also took musical “chances” using a full orchestra, for example. Definitely more to dig into with this man whose death inspired Don McLean’s magnum opus, “American Pie.” Yes, a pioneer.

Buddy Holly was part of that move away from more staid music, along with Bill Haley and Elvis. We loved them for giving us a voice we could call our own. We were born during or soon after the war and we were looking for a departure from what had come before. We will be forever grateful to guys like Buddy.

The Beatles covered "Words of Love" nearly note for note. When the Beatles emerged covering others' songs was the norm. Buddy Holly was one of the first artists to write his own material and the Beatles followed suit (recording their first records 3 years after Holly's death). The fact that the Beatles first UK album Please, Please Me had so many originals was a novelty.

He was an amazing innovator. I wish he had lived. His song "Everyday" has unique keyboards (celesta) and percussion (thigh-slapping); "Peggy Sue" has unusual drumming. The producer didn't like the drumming they had worked out, or any new thing they tried, and finally Holly said, "just play a taradiddle" which is a drumming warm-up exercise, and that's what ended up on the record.

Buddy took a lot from country and blues and added his own touch. He was lost way too soon. The day the music died. Buddy had been married about a year when he passed. He was 22. Buddy took the name for this song from a John Wayne movie called The Searchers. Somebody said to Wayne that he was going to do something (in the movie) and his answer was That'll be the day. As far as his influence the Rolling Stones first top ten single was a cover of Buddy's Not Fade Away. It is said that the Beatles chose their name as a tribute to the Crickets, and Paul McCartney bought the publishing rights to Buddy's music a few years back. When Buddy and the guys hit the charts with a couple big songs they started getting noticed by bigger venues. A booking agent called a radio station after hearing Buddy's songs being played and asked how to get in touch with him. He offered the boys a spot on a show at the Apollo in NYC. The guy had never seen Buddy and the guys and didn't realize they where white lol. When they showed up backstage the guy tried to back out. Buddy said he understood and they would leave ... as soon as they got payed. The guy decided they should play and the theater went silent when they went on stage. A few seconds after they started the crowd went nuts and they killed it.

Buddy Holly was the troubadour and pioneer who died at twenty-two years old. He only had eighteen months of fame. The following groups played his songs: The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Grateful Dead, Eric Clapton, Blind Faith, to name just a few. Each one of Buddy's songs is different from the next. He was one of the first rock and roll performers to write and perform his own music, use strings, double-track his voice, and use a variety of percussive tricks all in 18 months. He wrote the blueprint for rock and roll along with his contemporaries. Buddy was part of the FIRST class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. I would be elated if you reacted to "Well alright," "Everyday," "Early in the Morning," Listen to Me" or "It Doesn't Matter Anymore," and you will see how diverse he was.

The Beatles were originally a cover band... their repertoire contained 100's of songs of all types. They learned different styles and sounds that they incorporated into their own writing and melody. The Beatles used techniques and progressions that they didn't find in sheet music and that no one else had done; they heard it in their heads and put it to sound on their guitars, piano, bass and drums. It made their music fresh and alive which was the power of their popularity. They were totally unique on the scene, from personal style to the sounds they made. Guys like Sting saw them on the Ed Sullivan Show and said to themselves, "oh yeah, I can do that." School kids like Tom Petty, Duane and Greg Allman and others took over their parents' garage to learn to play music on the radio; most of the "rock gods" got their start that way and traveled a long road to achieve commercial success with their own sound and proficiency. The result were 3:00 minute masterpieces played on AM Radio to kids around the world. Later, "album rock" made inroads to FM stations that commercially catered to longer and more complex songs than the 3 minute Top 40 record spin. Buddy Holley, Elvis, Carl Perkins, Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis were a few of the rock pioneers that introduced the genre to a whole group of teenagers in the 1950's. Their little brothers and sisters heard these early records and were well primed to hear the "next step" by the time the Beatles came along in 1964.
