Vince wrote this for his best friend, singer Keith Whitley. He could never finish it. He lost his brother yrs later & finished it. Patty Loveless and Ricky Skaggs two legendary bluegrass artists. Both worthy of deep dives. Vince just sang this at Loretta Lynn's funeral. He got through it. When he sang it for George Jones' funeral, he only got through it with help from Patty. George and Vince were very close friends. It was heartbreaking and sweet at the same time. Vince has always stated, he hopes this song brings some Peace to those who need it. It has for me.

I lost my husband of 40 years in 2018. This was played at his service. He was injured in Vietnam, left him paralised on the left side, but always said, "at least it didn't happen to a little kid" ,and "you know there are a lot of people worse off then me". He was a strong, kind, generous man. He struggled but it never got him down.

This song has been played at thousands of funerals since it was released. Vince has sung it at several celebrity's funerals also. He always made it through those performances just fine, until he and Patti Loveless preformed it at Vince's mentor and best friend, George Jones' memorial. He made it about half way through and broke down. Patti carried it for a few moments, then Vince stepped back and started playing a guitar riff. Vince's passion is playing the guitar. After playing that long riff, he stepped back up to the mic and finished the song with Patti.

Jay and Amber, yes, Vince released this after the death of his brother, but he wrote the song at an earlier date following the death of Keith Whitley (an event I remember well). That's who this song was originally about. Those familiar with Keith's songs will recognize the lines in the first verse, "You weren't afraid to face the devil, you were no stranger to the rain" Those two lines are reference to lyrics in Keith's hit song, "I'm No Stranger To The Rain" If you get a chance, you should do a couple of reactions to Keith Whitley, "When You Say Nothing At All" and "I'm No Stranger To The Rain". He was a beloved figure in the country music family. He was married to Lori Morgan, also a singer.

He has worked and sung with each of them many times over the years. At one point Vince was part of Ricky Scaggs' band. He sang on Patty's first big hit and she sang on his, When I Call Your Name. The song was written in part for Keith Whitley and then finished after Vince's brother passed. Many people have played or sung this song at a family member's or loved one's funeral.

The singers in this song were Vince Gill, Patty Lovelace and Ricky Skaggs. They started out as country and western artists in the 1980s. All are major artists. However when the father of bluegrass Bill Monroe was nearing the end of his life he shared his concerns with Ricky Skaggs that bluegrass music would cease to be relevant in music after he passed. Ricky assured Mr. Monroe bluegrass was being left in good hands and it would continue. Ricky shared Mr. Monroes concerns with several artists who with out hesitation left country music and focused strictly on bluegrass. Some of the artists are Ricky Skaggs, his wife Sharon White, Patty Lovelace, Vince Gill and Marty Stuart. All are members of the Grand Ole Opry. This song was sang at George Jones Funeral, but it was also performed at a private concert honoring the first responders and volunteers and their families of the Oklahoma City Bombing. I was fortunate enough to see the performance in person.

I've heard two versions of the origin of this song. Some versions have Vince starting it for his brother, finished it for Keith Whitley, other versions say the opposite. Either way, the "no stranger to the rain" line definitely references Keith. Super "all the feels" song. With him being joined by Ricky Scaggs and Patty Loveless, you really should react to both of them too, especially Patty's version of "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive" . George Jones once told Vince that, "you sing too purdy for country music" and called him "Sweet Pea". Jay, I must say that I have loved watching you evolve during your journey though all different types of music and watching the way you now react to fiddles and sweet songs and lyrics is truly touching. Well done, both of you.

Yes, Vince wrote the first chorus when country singer Keith Whitley passed away. He finished the song when his own brother passed away. Vince is a truly phenomenal singer, song writer, and instrumentalist.

My best friend, along with 26 others, was killed by a drunk driver in 1988. I know this song came out after that awful night, but the first time I heard it, I couldn't help but think of him. Broke me right in half with how the lyrics, no matter when you hear them, are very relevant in a person's life. Now, don't let my name fool ya, I'm an extremely macho dude, but my eyes leak every single time I hear this song. It's a gutwrenching, beautiful song. Thanks for doing this video. Y'all are the best.

This is one of the only songs, I have ever heard, that has made me cry. I’m sure it had a lot to do with the fact that the first time I heard it was relatively near the time my sister passed away… Even to this day, all these years later, it puts me through the emotional ringer. I honestly don’t know if three voices have ever harmonized, more beautifully, and emoted such passion.

In June of 2017, this song came on the radio. My son, being 24 at the time, did not like but a handful of country songs but he liked this one. It came on the radio and he said "momma if I ever pass away, I want this played at my funeral". I, of course, said "don't say things like that, you'll outlive me for years". Unfortunately he didn't outlive me. He passed away just 3 months later. I honored his request by playing this song. Thank you for playing the original. It always brings tears to my eyes.

This is one of those songs that every version brings out different emotions. The one that Vince and Patty Loveless performed at George Jones funeral is by far the most powerful you will ever watch. I have probably seen it 20 times and I tear up every time. You really need to watch it now that you have seen the original.

First time I heard this song, Vince sang it with Alison Krauss and Ricky Skaggs. This version you are watching he is singing with Patty Loveless and Ricky Skaggs. Then there is a video of Vince singing this song at George Jones' funeral and he is singing it with Patty Loveless, he has a tough time getting through the song and Patty covers him so well through his emotions. Alison Krauss is pitch perfect but Patty Loveless has such and amazingly strong voice.

This song was released a month before my father passed away. I first heard it about a week after his memorial service. It shattered me, but so perfectly captured my grief, especially the second verse. My dad was a Godly man and I know his entrance into Heaven was a joyful one. But his work was done. I still can't listen to it without crying. It's one of the best songs Vince has ever sung or written. Patty Loveless and Ricky Skaggs accompany him on the vocals on the chorus. Love the reaction, as always. Peace!

That was with Ricky Scags and Patty Loveless singing back up. Patty sang back up on his "When I Call Your Name". Another good one is "Pocket Full of Gold". Patty Loveless is another rabbit hole you need to try, her "How Can I Help You to Say Goodbye" and "You Don't Even Know Who I Am" will bring the tears.

Amber!!! I’m crying now. I have a rule that no one cries alone! Anyway, my mother passed away during the peak of Covid so we only had a family only graveside service. We played this song at the end of the really brief service. I will always shed tears with a happy heart when I hear this song. I’m so thankful that she is now resting high on the mountain, like your dad...her work is done. ❤️
