That is some amazing scenery. I don't know if you get to choose the ad placement, or if YT does that, but they created a sort of cliffhanger moment, I got them just before you finished crossing the creek and going up the bank, then when you had the truck only on the 2 opposite wheels on that little dip. Fun stuff. Keep up the good work.

Wind, wind and more wind....sometimes it's worth putting up with when you can wake up to a stunning view and the calm peace of a quiet morning with no wind. We camped for a week on the "Playa" in the Black Rock Desert and got hammered with wind and dust every afternoon but the utterly quiet mornings were to behold.

I've been trying to think of where I want to go for my vacation. This series convinced me to head back into Utah and take some time to wander and see the smaller things that I normally have to skip on my weekend trips to the state and national parks.

This is an awesome series of videos!! What you talked about at the beginning with trails turning into dry washes, dropping in and out, following them etc is how a lot of trails are in the desert parts of Arizona. And just like those in your video, many of ours never or rarely see water.

I am really really happy with how well the Frontier has just gone wherever I point it. I encountered the craziest technical driving of my life on this trip and found myself facing obstacles that I honestly had no idea whether or not I could tackle, but the Frontier just calmly climbed everything.

That old ranch is a popular stopping/lunch/camping point and the river crossing is semi famous. Both Matts Off Road Recovery and Trailmater have pulled folks stuck in the water on that exiting bank out. It can get you if not careful.

I never would have thought of that! I'll give it a try. I keep finding new spots I overlooked where dust is getting in, and sealing them up, but seems I can never keep it all out. This trip was the worst dust I've ever experienced, and I was not successful trying to clean it as I went. I'll check out Swiffer!

@@softroadingthewest Maybe try turning on your fan and having it blow into the cabin. Positive pressure airflow will go out the areas where the dust is coming in. That is what we do with the teardrop if we are on a real dusty road and it mostly works. Way lees at any rate.

I have tried every solution that has been suggested to me. It doesn't bug me too much on the trail, but it's really starting to grate on me when I edit these episodes together, heh. :-)

@@softroadingthewest You tried electrical tape around the u-bolt for the hood latch? That has worked on my Xterra. Have to replace the tape now and then depending on how often you open the hood.

Those dry washes can be dangerous. One set of tire tracks and you can mistake them for being a road. How those Death Valley Germans got mixed up and wandered off of the main established road. Back before GPS, but a whole lot of folks exploring in the boonies these days don't have the navigational tools they need.

Solar panels eventually? Myself, I travel but when I find a good spot I will post up, base camp it for three or four days. I also enjoy fresh water fishing, Spin and Fly... Having the ability/capacity to recharge for several days without running your engine.

I have portable solar panels I bring when I know I will be camped in one spot for a few days - and when I do, I try to park in the shade, so the portable panels allow me to collect sunlight without heating up the truck. With my current life (day job work, kids, etc) I can only swing about a weeklong trip at the most and don't have the freedom to stop for a few days at a spot I like...I have to keep moving. In a few years when my youngest is out of high school, I'm hoping to be able to travel for longer stretches and be able to stop and enjoy a nice spot for more than 12 hours. :-)

Thanks again for a wonderful outing. I think I recognize that you are at Factory Butte in the beginning? I have been limited by work and my vehicle in exploring off the beaten path up to now. I have to do deep exploration by mt bike. Sand is my biggest enemy and sometimes water that turns out to be flowing a bit faster and a tad deeper than you dealt with here. But the reward can be finding an untouched gem like that cabin and that view.

This is why I LOVE the swell and central Utah. But in Monsoon season, you MUST be very careful driving in the washes. And never camp in them during monsoon.

Awesome video Donald. I can’t help but notice the constant squeak from your truck while driving. I don’t know if this is it but I know when I had my frontier it did the same damn thing, squeak every time I went anywhere. It actually comes from the rubber stops on the inside of the hood. I put some foam on them and the squeak disappeared!

I have tried every single solution suggested to me, including pads on the rubber stops, electrical tape on the latch loop, lithium grease on everything including the rubber stops. The grease helped briefly, but it went back to squeaking pretty quickly. What kind of foam did you use?

Those mountains are the Henry mountains. The last mountain range in the continental United States to be mapped and named. That huge butte is called factory butte, and about a mile east of the road there you can find shark teeth from the Cretaceous Sea 90 million years old just lying on the ground. This is one of my favorite places on earth

You won't find me including coordinates or other specifics in any of my videos (aside from obviously recognizable sites such as Goblin Valley in part 3). I do usually leave a few clues for those who care to work at it a bit. I'm not going to get into a debate about the pros and cons of sharing location specifics, but know that for every viewer who leaves a comment like yours, there are probably ten who ask me NOT to share locations or even get mad at me for even showing these places on KZfaq. All of these places are on public land for anyone to find. I discovered all these sites myself by scouting maps & satellite imagery, then plotting routes to tie them together. It doesn't matter if you find or don't find these specific spots. Spend some time with maps, Google Earth, and plain ol' internet research, and you can find endless cool spots to check out yourself. Personally I find it's far more rewarding to do my own homework and make my own discoveries. :-)

I travel occasionally also and I’m curious about whether you would consider getting an electric bike for some of the areas that are hard to reach. Some of these bikes can go from 20 to 50 miles on a charge. It seems like this would be a safer bet than risking your vehicle and possibly not being able to get out of a compromising situation. I have noticed that some of these bikes are foldable. 🖖

I have one. It's kind of a headache to load/unload from the back of the truck so I'm less inclined to bring it on this kind of overland trek where I'm making & breaking camp every night & every morning, but I enjoy bringing it along if I'm just going camping at one spot for a few days and can leave the truck parked and explore the area by bike. It is awaiting some repairs at the moment but I'm hoping to incorporate a little more of that in future videos.

17:30 ????? Why do you not have large 400 watt Solar panel on top of your Topper, aka Shade as well? Or 2 smaller ones on each Side as awnings and solar power

Solar on the truck is a low priority for me. I generally drive every day, so the Jackery can easily recharge when I'm driving. When I'm not driving/in camp, it's generally late in the day/night/early morning when there's not effective sunlight. If I happen to be in camp when the sun is high or go camp in one spot for a few days, I tend to prefer to park in the shade whenever possible...I don't want to be compelled to park in the sun just to keep solar panels juiced. When I know I'll be in camp for a few days (rare but happens sometimes) I bring my portable solar panels so I can put those in the sun and leave the truck in the shade. :-)

Have you noticed if the insulation is helping or hurting with the heat/sun beating down on the truck?

The insulation definitely helps with the sun...it gets very noticeably less hot in there than it used to. I resisted doing insulation for a long time but ultimately I'm glad I did it, and it didn't cost much at all, mostly time. It's not life changing in winter...still gets very cold as soon as any active heat source is turned off, but I'm sure it keeps things a little cozier. The fan moves a pretty solid volume of air, I think it's rated at 200cfm, which doesn't sound like a lot compared to many fans, but when you consider the fairly tiny amount of cubic footage I have in my little box (~5' wide x ~5' long x ~5' tall = 125 cubic feet) 200cfm isn't bad. Its impact on my space is somewhat limited by its placement, as it's close to the door and close to the opening of the slider window, so the air it sucks in goes right back out and the front end sees less circulation. On a warm night though, I could close the door and the slider and leave the windoor along my bed open and should get a pretty nice flow over me. So far all my nights since installing the fan have cooled off nicely or been just plain cold, we'll see how it goes if I get out into some hotter weather this summer. :-)

Nah, it's kind of a headache to load/unload and I didn't want to deal with it every evening and every morning (and I really didn't have time for side trips on this trek...my time really gets filled with filming and I'm running enough as it is from dawn until going to bed. I'm more inclined to bring the bike when I'm going to camp in one spot for a few days and just have to load/unload one time, then I can leave the truck parked and explore the area on bike without burning any ga$oline. :-) The bike is currently awaiting some repairs, but I am hoping to incorporate it in more videos going forward, as it's a lot of fun to have out there.

the area at 11:45 looked pretty unforgiving, probably best to have moved on from there
