I love how this guy has one of the highest paying jobs in the United States, yet he saves things that you and I would think was trash. Another reason the rich stay that way. Kudos to this man.

I really like the integrity of his workshop, everything has a reason and he doesn’t just throw money at his craft. He could have the best quality of every modern tool, but instead he hones his craft and only buys what he needs (I must try harder with that). Then in his spare time he saves and maintains lives.

Often times modern tools will not make an antique appear period correct (something my father has taught me) every detail is important when working with museum grade pieces!

This is probably the most interesting woodworking video I've seen on KZfaq. I'm now in retirement and furniture - making and turning are my main hobbies. I'm making furniture for my own use as, if I'm lucky enough, I may have to move into an apartment in years to come so I'm making items that I can enjoy looking at and remembering. I look forward to some instructional videos from William.

nice shop doc.. im a retired anesthesiologist. dont miss it much but I do miss medicine in general. anyway I started woodworking a year ago and love it. we have some things in common. take care.

Wow! That work is amazing! Fitting that an anesthesiologist has an apothecary chest..... Some REALLY wonderful ideas for recycling or saving stuff for tools and jigs around the shop. Especially the junction boxes as squares 😲

Dear Sir, I was blown away by the well laid out compact workshop, the extensive use of hand tools and the magnificent end results. Today you just skimmed the surface and whet all your audience’s appetites. What I would hope for in the future is for a breakdown of individual steps such as creating inlays, making curved panels, producing the barber pole light / dark inlay strips and carving etc. Each process could be a separate concise video. This would make a brilliant series. Cheers and thanks a million for sharing your craft.

The chest of drawers @ :40 is to die for. Simple but extremely elegant. You Sir are doing just what I want to do in my retirement; it’s just 3 year away. I’ve got a few pieces I’ve done through the years. I’m have not tried my hand at carving, but I do have a pretty good eye for and pretty decent sense of want needs to be done. Inlays, I don’t know if I would ever have the patience. I love the federal period of furniture making. I’ve subscribed to your channel and look forward to learning anything I can.

Thanks for the tour (and tips). I enjoyed seeing inside the shop of a “master” who is also thrifty. Is that fiberglass insulation in the ceiling? If so seal that stuff up, it shouldn’t be exposed in a room that’s lived or worked in a lot.

Wow wow wow! Watched it in it’s entirety and am blown away by your skill and your body of work. Just added about 400 new must have hand tools to my list. One question - how do you find the time to balance all that woodworking with family and a your career? I’m an ER doc and my wife complains about how much time I spend in the shop and don’t have much to show for it relative to what you have achieved. What’s your secret?

I work a FTE-plus in 10 -12 days! On call every night. Not easy, but I value the time off so much I'm still doing it.

A small CNC would be helpful since he is concerned about doing delicate work faster. Easy to use. Just a simple software like Sketchup will do for drawing. Easy to learn.

Very nice work that you produce in your shop, if I was to nitpick, your slotted screws should all run parallel with the knuckle of the hinge, wax will help this when using brass screws

We saw your gold gilt eagles. Where do you get your 24 kt gold gilt layers? Am just starting gilding and see several companies who sell it. Mixed reviews including some brands are too thin for easy gilding

To do any job you need the right tools. More importantly you need to learn what tools you need, this can only be done through experience. Some tools I use have been upgraded several times as my skill using them has superceeded there function. The idea you can spent 50 grand setting up a perfect workshop with all the latest equipment and make top quality furniture like William here, is not realistic.. Its all about experimentation and problem solving. Also my guess is all the furniture in this guys house are prototypes because the lessons you've learned with the first one make the second and third so much better and your confidence in them is so much greater, especially if your selling them..

I spend way more money on gadgets and tools that I really don't need, and my work is no where near this level. Puts things into perspective. I don't really need all the crap I think I do.
