Roaming The Outback

Күн бұрын

My exploration of Sturt National Park continues, driving to Fort Grey campgrounds along Cameron Corner Road. I encounter a dust storm, visit Cameron Corner where the three states of NSW, QLD & SA meet, emergency mechanical repairs to my Defender, and a desert hike to visit Sturt's blazed tree.

Well done to identify and correct the problem. You did well to investigate it promptly because I think if the last bolt had loosened you'd have lost the injection timing. You don't want to have to re-time the engine in the field. These days I do virtually 100% servicing myself because very few mechanics take as much care as you do with your own vehicle. To you it's mission critical and to them it's just another job.

A suggestion for your miscellaneous hardware collection... Get some high-grade (8.8 or 10.9) nuts for the bolts you carry. Thread the nut on before you cut, so after you've made your cut, you can run that nut off of the shortened bolt to correct any thread damage at the cut. The storage space if you put these nuts onto their respective bolts is minimal, plus if you need to check the depth of a blind hole with a missing bolt, you can thread-in the too-long bolt until it bottoms, then turn the nut down until it bottoms on the mounting boss face, then remove the bolt to see how long it needs to be.

All in a 1990 Volvo 240, yes I had two spare wheel/tyre combo, all belts and hoses, all top up fluids, tool kit and spares, full service manual, inc,. nuts & bolts, which I see someones has already mentioned about leaving the correct nut on the bolt before you cut it. The G clamp & vice grip is a great idea. Your process of problem solving/elimination would put many mechs to shame! So glad the U toob algorithm brought yr vids to my notice. Cheers.

sounded like a tappet but fair play you found it. I cant believe the issues you have with bloody average mechanics. Glad I don't carry out my engineering like that there would be aircraft falling out the sky everywhere. I have to admit I always carry a 4" Record vice. You could always clamp the bolt in the vise grips as you did then G clam that onto the bull bar just an idea also a Tec Tip run a nut down the bold so once you have cut the excess off you can use a file to clean the cut surface then run the nut back an forth without taking it off to clean the pitch out nicely .

You need to check your own vehicle for what the common threads and sizes are... But add some high tensile bolts in.

This makes my blood boil. What is wrong with Parks? The office is opposite that camp ground and they cant even maintain anything... oh except I bet there is gas for the BBQs. Last time I went to that windmill the blades were on it.. but nah, lets let everything fall apart and sink into the desert. Lets let it all disappear. In 50 years what do they think tourists are going to look at? The BBQ facilities?
@mrcvry
@mrcvry 4 жыл бұрын
Sure. People will visit those ancient bbq places from the bloody times before everyone had soylent green. Or perhaps the global warming will have made Australia uninhabitable anyway.
