Stygian is an RPG Maker Horror game from the creator of Cat in the Box and serves as a prequel to Cat in the Box featuring characters and concepts that cameo in the latter. Needless to say it involves good times had by all.

For those unfamiliar. The word "Stygian" refers to the River Styx in greek mythology. The River Styx is said to be the boundary between the earth and the underworld itself. Which may explain the first cutscene we see in the game.

This is going to be great! Its felt like its been ages since we've had a bishounen protagonist lolll This dev does a great job at creating tension with these chase sequences. I haven't bitten my nails this much for a rpgmaker game since Witch's house and this house/mansion looks suspiciously like a cleaner version of the mansion in the sequel edit* LMAOOO at the CHIICCCCKKKKEEEEEEEEEEEEEN .

What would be sick is that the creator of the game left a hint on how to get a good ending / how to destroy that creature once and for all in Cat in the Box, some secret easter egg code or something. Seeing how much he thought about Cat in the Box, that could very be possible he went back to this game and modified some parts of it or had already thought of including parts in CitB when he was still working on Stygian, already planning a sequel to the game.

Hm, I think we may have a similar case with CITB where the protagonist and the other two are continuously going through hell in the house. Those shadows must represent the past attempts they've made before dying, or they're in a weird space-time rift where they see their previous actions or future things to come if they make a wrong move. Awesome stuff here also, that chicken part had me in stitches. Freaking tentacle monster thing lol.

You're correct, it was never translated. I just really liked both CitB and a bunch of Gustav's other games and thought it was criminal that we never got to experience this one despite being both a good game and adding to CitB's lore, so I sat down and spent a week banging this translation out.

Okay, so after a bit of researching effort, I found out the Blue-haired guy’s name is Chekhov. It’s a reference to Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, Russian writer most notorious for the theorem of “Chekhov’s Guns”. “Chekhov’s Guns” is basically having a trivial detail that can be easily shrugged off as something to describe the environment, only for that same detail to play a major role in later parts of the story. This applies well to CITB’s “The Cliff” - a seemingly minor detail as all creepy manors are placed on cliffside - becoming “Girl” mass grave in the ending where you sacrifices the Stranger’s finger instead of yours.

It's not Cat in the Box PREQUEL It's just another game. But developer said that he could not answer the question of whether it was related. and The dialog at 1:00 seems to be paraphrase The original is to go meet friends.

@ApplesAreFun Developers used existing ones to reduce graphic work. He continued the feeling of STYGIAN and created a new game that gave feedback on what was lacking in STYGIAN. Asked if there could be a remake of STYGIAN following the ending of "Cat in the Box," he said, "I have no plans, but it could be." So now both are irrelevant worldviews. The possibility of STYGIAN remake coming out is still minimal because it is currently working on other new works. Look forward to his other new work. The new work is being made with RPG MAKER MV

@ApplesAreFun I had asked the developer directly, and I'm on his Discord server. The minigame was cancelled. He liked Biozahard RE 2's Hank, and he wanted to include some similar, but the plan didn't fit and was canceled. Using the same sprite is just for testing to reduce the amount of graphics work. And the appearance of the developers' previous characters is a kind of cameo for old fans. and When people talk about STYGIAN so much, the developer gag that whoever said stygian is buried in a grave. In conclusion, there is no story relevance to the previous works now. However, there is only the possibility that the game can be continued at any time.

The other 2 characters, around the 21:00 minute mark letting the main guy go ahead is definitely suspicious. Since they all read that page where is says only one is needed and whoever does the trials is gonna be there one sacrificed. I'm thinking they know what they're doing. 🤔

A prequel? Oh boy, I'm sure our trio will be just fine after how things went for Girl. At the very least, we can be confident Girl's sister will survive this ordeal. Considering our protagonist's memories not lining up with the others and how he keeps seeing visions of them and himself dying, maybe he actually is the cult's chosen one and he keeps catching glimpses of the other versions of himself in different loops.

Since it isn't visible on mobile (even with the brightness maxed, at least on my phone) but I'm watching it on smart tv: Underneath the title Stygian is a VERY FAINT "Revelation: 22:21" which is: "The grace of the Lord Jesus be with God"s people. Amen." (And other variations depending on the version, I'm quoting NIV specifically) I haven't finished the playthrough yet but do with this what you will. It might reference on how everybody is doomed the end Also with the cryptic message about how only two will leave.......welp guess our protag is doomed I see some comments about the title coming from the River Styx and I know NOTHING about Greel Mythos so
