It's crazy that we went from "if you carry something, you're poor" to "if you don't carry something, you're poor". Just like we went from being pale meant you didn't have to work outside and you were wealthy, and now if you're tan it means you have the means to tan all day instead of working. It's a luxury.

I am so glad that you covered this. I, and every woman I know, has been complaining about this for *years* and I keep hearing things like, "That's not true," "women don't WANT pockets or women's clothes would HAVE pockets," or (the bane of my personal existence), "just buy MEN'S pants; boom, problem solved." I cannot fully express the sheer and utter horror I felt not four years ago when I was looking for work pants and came across a pair of women's cargo pants with decorative pockets.

I (36F) needed black dress pants for a retail job a while back. I went to like 15 stores looking for a pair that was A) durable enough to last more than a few weeks, B) made of a fabric that wouldn't pick up dust or lint specks if you looked at it wrong, C) had pockets deep enough to hold a box cutter and a sharpie without them falling out when you crouch to pick things up (I took my box cutter with me while shopping to check), and D) didn't wrinkle easily. I ended up having my retired military dad take me to the closest Navy exchange and buy me a pair of *their* women's dress slacks (I paid him back of course). I took those pants to a local dry cleaner to get them tailored to fit me and pockets added. They didn't have any pockets at all by default, but it turns out tailors can generally add stuff like that to almost any pants that aren't skintight. For not as expensive as you'd think. It cost me like $100 all in all (pants + tailoring and this was like 8 years ago so it'd probably be more now), but those pants fit me perfectly without needing a belt, looked great, had wonderful pockets, and lasted me several years even though I didn't go easy on them. Zero regrets.

Fun fact, one day I saw a comic that joked about fitting a newborn into a man's pocket. My wife and I decided to carefully see if we could fit my then newborn daughter snugly into it. And yes, it was just big enough. I have carried the entire contents of my wife's purse in my pockets, I used to go on band trips with my phone, wallet, keys, 2 NintendoDS snacks, etc. in them. I also wore carpenter jeans with the extra side pockets, but the fact remains that men's pockets are SIGNIFICANTLY bigger. I had 3 pairs of jeans that drove me crazy because of tiny, useless front pockets. Started to get rid of them. But then my brain woke up. I simply cut the bottoms off the inside fabric of the pockets and added extensions cut from scraps of fabric. (It didn't matter what color scraps I used, because they were inside where they didn't show.) Now I have deep pockets and the jeans were saved from a landfill.

Pockets are simultaneously the best and worst thing in women's clothing depending on what type of clothing you're wearing... In jeans they're ridiculously small, in leggings they're notoriously non-existent, and in dresses they're the first thing you loudly proclaim the second someone compliments the dress (the fabulous "THANKS IT HAS POCKETS!!!" moment). Yup, can confirm. When a piece of women's clothing has _functional_ pockets it is genuinely one of the most happy/exciting finds on an entire outfit. For most of high school I straight refused to wear "women's" clothes because it just wasn't practical or cost effective; I could go to the men's section, get better quality clothes for a MUCH better price. For pants I just re-stitch the bottoms so they don't drag (and double perk was it is far less of a puzzle trying to find the right size!). Nearly all of my shirts to this day are from the men's section because they get the comfy thick cotton rather than the itchy thin (nearly see through) cotton and I'm spending at _least_ half as much for the same, if not better, shirt.

I would love an episode about inconsistent sizing, which mainly happens with bras but also jeans (and pretty much everything else, realistically). For women's clothing, it's almost a requirement to try the items on when buying jeans because you can have two of the same exact pairs of jeans (brand, style, everything) and they'll fit differently. This is likely due to the manufacturing process, but I _hate_ trying on clothing in-store. Why is creating consistent and universal sizing so difficult?
@InvaderZinga
@InvaderZinga Жыл бұрын
What sucks is that men have better sizing. For example pants; women have numbers like 4 or 6 which is arbitrary whereas men get stuff like 34x42 or something, giving the waist size and the length of the leg. Why can't they do something for woman pants? But to your point yes, it's crazy that you can be a small in one brand's clothes but be a large in another brand.

I recently, just for the heck of it, tried on a pair of men's jeans. And to my utter shock and surprise was overcome with anger because of the following two things: 1. Men's jeans fit my hips and waist way better than any women's jeans ever did, and I've got a bit of a curve to myself 2. I could fit my hand well past my wrist into the front /and/ back pockets Needless to say, I've bought those jeans. And multiple other pairs. They're my favorite jeans now. If you're a woman thinking about trying on men's jeans just for the heck of it, do it. The one thing I really hate is fake pockets. I remember buying a pair of shorts only to find that the pockets had been sewn shut, I rip the stitches out. Why would they give it pockets and render them useless? The shorts didn't last as long but I had pockets!

You might gain some insight on this in a quote from Christian Dior, the founder of the Dior brand: "Men have pockets to keep things in. Women, for decoration." Really progressive fellow there.

there is a difference between fake pockets that don't exist and pocket that are bast stitched for shipping and anti shoplifting purposes. you had the latter, as the former wouldn't have anything there even if you did rip stitching out.

I have never liked using pockets to store things. It feels bulky and things fall out of them or end up going through the laundry. It's much easier just to carry a bag around.

In the 18th century, the tie on pockets actually went underneath layers of petticoats with side slits in them for easy access. It would have been extremely difficult for pickpockets to untie a pocket from underneath multiple petticoats and the pannier and the outer layer. The biggest risk was the pockets coming undone by themselves, if they weren't tied well enough. Hence the rhyme "Sally locket lost her pocket".

I had my favorite skirt (it’s from adidas) for a few months before I realized it had two big pockets that are barely visible because of how the fabric fits. The pockets are hidden, but can fit so much! I just have to sew on a zipper or a button or something to make sure things don’t fall out when I run or dance

Recently some brands have started making their pockets bigger in women's clothing. I have joggers with massive pockets and even pajama pants with pockets I guess so I can store my midnight snacks. We're thankfully moving in the right direction.

Abby Cox has a couple of recent videos about purses and the pockets. Really great stuff if you're really geeky about history. I think she mentioned how the fall of pockets due to the rise in popularity of the purse could also be correlated to the rise of the modern cosmetics industry - i.e. preference to carry cosmetics in a purse vs pockets as you can change a bag much easier than you can rip out a pocket and sew a new one in should there be an accident with cosmetic pigments.

Cellphones have had a standard size for YEARS but the vast majority of clothes factories will refuse to make the pockets able to completely hold a cellphone. Then again, a trip to the seamstress can solve that on an individual level.

I will never get over the excitement I get when I instantly check if any dresses I'm given have pockets. The audible gasp upon finding them and then the slightly higher pitch in tone as I exclaim "It has pockets!!!!" and then putting my hands in said pockets to enjoy for a few seconds. Sadly with some that I have currently, even if they fit my whole hand they are wide and if I put my phone in them and sit down my phone flls out, but I still love having them. :3

Another pocket issue is fake pockets in women's clothing. I used to have a few pairs of jeans (and shirts) from one of my great aunts that had fake pocket flaps sewn onto them, where there could've been fully functioning pockets.
