I have both this variety and the variegated one. The variegated one needed more sunlight in my observation. Thanks for sharing this!

I just got one of those and never worked one before. Mine doesn't have any branches. Just leaves. Will the leaves eventually become branches if left alone? Also how do these work in terms of budding back? Thanks!

I love every episode and I've ordered pots and stuff from you, can you please add in the time of year that you do your defoliation, thanks again for your persistence in getting out quality video's...

Hi Treowe, Thank you very much for your support! Defoliation depends on species and climate. In Florida, I defoliate most trees in early Spring before everything starts to take off, and then again in June/July when the trees go through a dormant period and stop growing for about two weeks.

@@WeareTheBonsaiSupply Thanks for taking the time to respond it really means allot, I'm soon going to be the father lol, of a 50 something year old schefflera, and I live in Las Vegas so I'm concerned about proper care being this tree has lived it's whole life in Florida,... I'll defoliate in the spring and I'm thinking I'll have move her indoors during the summer and winter months under a grow light,.. I'll have to figure out watering while indoors,... You've been so helpful and with what I've learned from your videos is inspiring and gives a novice like me confidence in attempting to grow bonsai, Thanks again, stay safe, And I def owe you a beer,...😀

@@WeareTheBonsaiSupply Thanks again, I've got another question, would you defoliate Hawaiian umbrella when there really young? Id love to send a pic of what I'm talking about but I don't see an option to that. Maybe there third spring coming up.

Lovely Tree. Here in Europe, I experience that the Dwarf Hawaiian Umbrella is a really unusual and uncommon species. Even as Indoor Bonsai. You rarely find any of these as a Bonsai, only at nurseries as normal plants with really young age. So yes, I totally agree with you, that it's an underrated tree as bonsai. Next to the ficus in my opinion, it's a very strong species witch has a wax film, that helps the tree against dry air in the heating periods during winter.

How about doing a Surinam Cherry (Eugenia uniflora), Peregrina (Jatropha integerrima), Sea Grape (Coccoloba uvifera) or [not sure if it is even suitable for bonsai] Cocoplum (Chrysobalanus icaco)? Feel free to do all of them. 🙂

Please show results of your schefflera bonsai..you just showed the steps but did not show the outcome after.

When is the right time to defoliate this tree. And I never get aerial roots on my umbrella tree or my ficus trees. Could you tell me why?

in my experience it's very hard to get aerial roots to take outside of a tropical grow zone as they need year-round light, warmth, humidity (I'm in Pacific NW) -- I can get them started, but they don't last long enough to reach the soil 😞
