I saw Styx in January at the Alabama Theater. I was 7 rows away from Lawrence. I tried so hard, but the tears just burst out. He made eye contact with me and saw me bawling. This song reminds me of my grandmother and the line "and we'll try, best that we can, to carry on" had gotten me through several suicidal episodes since she died. This band has quite literally saved my life.

Eternally grateful to DDY and Styx for this beautiful and timeless recording. Many of us in our 50s and 60s now look back to a simpler time in life and real music like this. Styx band members if you see this, thank you for inspiring so many of us back then..as we get older we appreciate songs like this more and more as we start to lose those we love along the way. Somehow I can never forget that my sister, ten years older, had this as her prom song. She passed away roughly eight years later after a bone marrow transplant failed to end her fourth stage cancer. I vividly remember her saying, "I think of childhood friends and the dreams we had," not long before matters worsened. She had married. She had a house. I will always remember her great strength. I think of it even more now that my Dad has passed. To all those who feel alone, I am with you. I bring you my heart, the small peace I have snatched from tragedy. Bless you. You are not alone.

I was sitting in the window of my girlfriend (now wife) dorm room smoking a cigarette about to go to work for the evening shift at a shoe store in the mall. Forty years ago when this song was popular, I was in the U.S. Navy. About this time, my ship was heading overseas for 9 months and as we moved away from the pier, waving our farewells to wives, girlfriends and friends being left behind, the bridge began to play this song over the 1MC, the public address system. It really fit the moment.

I remember clearly as a young teenager in the 70's how this song became such a massive hit, my gosh not only did they play it on the radio all the time, but it seemed like absolutely everyone young and old loved this song. It was such a different time, the album must have sold so well, they were a wildly popular band. And fact is Dennis De Young was just an amazing talent

My ex-husband and father of my children just died from a failed double lung transplant. We all couldn't be more devastated. The day after he passed this song came on and I recalled how we both loved it, then the tears began to flow again because the song so eloquently describes how he looked to the sea and saw their life, then a gathering of angels appeared above the head. I felt as though the song was telling me through music that he was home and that he rose with the angels. Every day is a treasure. Take lots of pictures.

A bit of history for you D&D nerds out there, Jeff Grubb the creator of Spelljammer was heading to a pitch meeting at TSR and had nothing, and would take inspiration from anything to nail a proposal. Then this song came onto his radio. After listening to the guitar fade out in his parking space, he got out of his car, entered the conference room and just went for broke and rolled with it. Now we have fantasy in space to mess around with in our games thanks to this band.

I'm sailing away Set an open course For the Virgin Sea 'cause I've got to be free Free to face the life That's ahead of me On board I'm The Captain So...climb aboard We'll search for tomorrow On every shore And I'll try Whoa Lord I'll try To carry on I look to the sea Reflections in the waves Spark my memory Some happy Some sad I think of childhood friends And the dreams we had Lived happily forever So...the story goes But...somehow we missed out On the pot of gold But...we'll try Best that we can To carry on A gathering of angels Appeared above my head They sang to me This song of hope And this is what they said They said Come Sail Away Come Sail Away Come and sail away with me lad Come Sail Away Come Sail Away Come and Sail Away with me Come Sail Away Come Sail Away Come Sail Away with me...ohh Come Sail Away Come Sail Away Come Sail Away with me I thought that they were angels Much to my surprise We climbed aboard their starship We headed for the skies Come Sail Away Repeat forever Of course...it was written by Dennis De Young...which always makes me think of San Francisco...where the De Young Museum is...in fact, I have a friend that works there...Hi Arie. The Grand Illusion album from where this song comes...is nearly a masterpiece. 8 songs...39 minutes...recorded in Chicago...it was released 7-7-77. Classic Rock critic Malcolm Dome rated the title track as Styx all-time greatest song. He also rated "Come Sail Away" as the band's 7th greatest song.
