If you love Styx, you like Dennis. This is established over and over. Fact is Laurence sings it as good or better, and has the exact same pitch and inflection as Dennis. Plus LG has been in the band 25 years now without leaving. And he is a way better pianist and keyboardist than Dennis ever was or will be.

Gowan's voice in no way comes close to that of Dennis DeYoungs ,but, then again who does. My point Dennis is Styx, he wrote most of the Big hits and his creative genius is in a league of its own.

Lyrically, this is a song with an extremely powerful message that transcends generations. Musically, it stands out as a rock masterpiece that nobody talks about. "Pieces of Eight" - both the track and its titular album - is a textbook example of what made Styx so much more special than most casual listeners may think.

My organ donor saved eight lives on December 7th, 2011 after she had been murdered on December 6th, 2011. I wonder of those eight individuals she save how many of us are still alive? She was declared legally dead, but in each of us still alive a piece of her is alive, in my body her left kidney survives and her family wanted to make meaning out of her tragic loss and she was only 19 when her life was taken from her. I have survived more than ten years with her organ in my body, she has filtered more than 330 tons of my poisoned blood... with her left kidney and she is the best friend of my life. All I am for her is a living tomb, epitaph and Emery stone. Pieces of Eight... I have a real silver piece of eight not cut into eight pieces... each piece if cut would be worth 20 dollars U.S. I am related to Admiral Sir Henry John Morgan on my mother's side of the family... my organ donor's first name was Morgan and that is so bizarre... thanks STYX for this song... I wish all of you the best... song reminds me of the price paid for my life in eight pieces and it was not silver... it was paid for in tons of blood... all red... all my love and prayers for the family of my donor, her father's only daughter and she was a ballet,lyrical and jazz dancer from age three to age nineteen... this is her in the first video I saw of her and I lost it when I first saw this video in 2014 after I signed legal documents to have contact with her father... an amazing lady... cut to pieces after she was murdered to save lives... she was killed by a drunk doctor in a car wreck and it caused a blood clot to her brain... she was number 7 in the competition and saved my life on December 7th, 2011... all of those things are so bizarre to me... se7en is the number of completion in ancient writing... all of the events have been strange to me for the past ten years... thanks STYX for this one song... my donor and the first video of her I ever saw of her... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qJx3fLKgm82md4E.html

To keep the record straight, the tour was not originally called the "Pieces of Eight" tour. For some reason it was called The Main Event Tour. I guess someone figured that "The Main Event" was going to be the big hit off the album, which it wasn't. The tour program featured a boxer on the front., and I have a couple of them somewhere. Now, a great story. (Well, at least I think so.) We were in rehearsals in Hammond In. , and I was the new guy on the crew. Now you have to keep in mind that Styx was, and probably always will be my favorite band of all time. It was my first day, and to my knowledge the band hadn't been in yet, and had, to my understanding, not even seen each other since they had recorded Pieces of Eight 6 months before. No when you record something with strong harmonies, there are 3 ways to do it. All at the same time in separate rooms, all in the same room at the same time, or laying down individual tracks when you can get some in the studio I had listened to Pieces of Eight extensively before I got the call, so needless to say, I was stoked when it came. I had turned down jobs with The Police, and Supertramp waiting for this call, and if it hadn't happened, I would have been devastated. Anyway, back to the story. The guys came rolling in one or two at a time in the morning. We ended up waiting for Tommy to arrive when all of a sudden we hear tires screeching and a jeep door slamming. In walks Tommy with a shit eating grin on his face saying something about the Indiana State Patrol, and laughing. I never did get the whole story. ANYWAY......when time came for the band to do their mic check, and they had each tested theirs individually, they needed to sing something together. I'll be damned if someone didn't count it off, and they did the chorus to Pieces of Eight DEAD NUT ON like they had been playing it for days. From that moment on, these guys walked on water as far as I was concerned I ended up not staying with them very long for personal reasons, but for a young rock and roll roadie out of Seattle, I was in heaven at least for a little while.
@markharrison53215 жыл бұрын
That is a great story. I read the Eagles used to warm up their harmony singing Seven Bridges Road in the dressing room, and regularly sang it as part of their mic checks. The response from their road crew eventually led them to actually perform it live in front of an audience, record it on a live album, and release it as a single.

Dennis de young was great for the band but became to controlling so they told him to hit the road. The band seems to enjoy the music again and their new Album is incredible! I have had the pleasure of seeing Styx with and without Dennis and Styx is a better band without Dennis. I have watched Dennis and his new band The Music of Styx and without his old bandmates it just isn't the same music. The New Styx have found a voice in Lawrence Gowan to keep the old Styx music alive while creating new powerful music. How is this bad?
@diceytrust27686 жыл бұрын
Chris Jakubowicz - The Dennis crowd just can't accept that DDY was replaceable after all. To them, he is the end all, be all of Styx. And if he's not there, the band should have just quit. They really are that nasty. And they think we, who support Lawrence Gowan, are selfish. I've watched Dennis's band on KZfaq here, to me they are just terrible. The person Dennis hired over sings the vocals on TS's tracks. And Dennis's voice is deteriorating. I listen with headphones on, and I can really hear how his voice sounds very old. Which I realize was bound to happen, for he is 70. To me, Dennis should just retire. He only does around 30-45 shows a year. I also noticed he doesn't play keyboards a lot during his concerts, which is strange since he's a keyboard player.
@cjak19666 жыл бұрын
I agree Deborah. Dennis was a great performer but his time is past. Dennis De Young and the music of Styx band is a joke. Poor musicians and a need by Dennis to have them look like his old Styx mates. Dennis' new band mates look so out of place, its funny to watch them on You Tube all acting like Dennis wants them too. I don't dislike Dennis but he obviously had a control problem and that is the sole reason he isn't still with the band.

Chris Jakubowicz ~ Yes, Dennis's time is past. He should just be proud of what he's accomplished, and move on. And yes, he was a great performer. My main problem was when he tried to sue Styx. That was so wrong. In any company, once an employee can't, or won't do what is required for the job, the company gets rid of them in some form or another. This situation was no different. Dennis cannot do the rigorous touring that the band does, so they replaced him with someone who can & WILL. It's really that simple. When that whole thing started, Dennis literally wanted them to wait for him to get better, before they toured for the "Brave New World" CD. Well here it is, over 18 years later, and Dennis's is still ill...supposedly. And still can NOT tour regularly. I've said it several times before on these posts, and I'll say it again... If Styx had allowed DDY to stay, they would've been finished...period. Maybe that makes the Dennis crowd happy, but to me, the guys were still in their prime, and much too young to just pack it up, back in '99. And I also agree, their latest album, "The Mission", is excellent. It's nice to talk to someone who has some reasoning. Thanks for listening... ✌🎶😉

It's not bad. Every band member still is amazing. Tommy still has a bit of his 80s voice, Larry kinda sounds like DDY and can jam it out perfectly on keyboard, JY is getting up there in age but still can't stop rockin, Todd is a beast at drums, Ricky can't be any better, and Chuck is the same.

Chris Jakubowicz Agree 100%! DDY’s ego and controlling personality disgusts me! Love Styx as is!!!

Despite James Young being the only original member, STYX is still awesome today.. As long as they have the trident of Gowan, Shaw,and Young... They are,and always will be awesome!!

alot of bands rely on past material created by people no longer in the band to draw audiences not quite right

so should they just quit performing, even though their fans want them to continue?

Why? Dennis does the same thing with his band, in covering JY's & Tommy's material. As long as everyone's happy, in the two camps, I don't see the problem.
