I’m referring to the clash of fashions at that time, as partially seen in this very music video. This is one of my favorite Styx songs and I love both 70s and 80s music. I was in 5th grade when this came out. Early 80s rock/pop music was the first music that I listened to seriously, and there was a lot of 70s hard rock music still lingering on the radio back then.

Daniel Katzenjammer My parents bought me plenty of corduroy fashions for school and church wear back then. For some reason, I don’t think those threads made me very popular with my friends back then, and I don’t think they even came back into fashion in later days! 🤷♂️ 😄

I don’t know why the critics hated Styx so much, they were awesome!!!
@Ifyernotawakeyet3 жыл бұрын
Because critics know that youth music tastes, for the most part, are rebellious. If a band is obviously talented, rebellion against critic sells albums by word of mouth more than radio play (but NOT more than Mtv in the 80's). All bands that got big by word of mouth were "hated" by critics (Rush, Iron Maiden, Kiss). All bands that got big by radio play, the critics "loved" AC/DC, Elton John etc...
3 жыл бұрын
@@Ifyernotawakeyet why do we care what some "A hole" thinks about movies or music? Critics are just low paid out of work journalists trying to stir the pot to make a name. Nothin but clowns. Zeppelin, The Beatles, Stones, Metalica all the greats had critics that hated em. You and I are the only critics that matter when the wallet comes out.
@GER-sm3gh3 жыл бұрын
Critics panned Styx because they're midwest and working class and they (the critics) are snobby elitists that only find value in so-called significant and cultured artists, like Springsteen and Elvis Costello.

@bellroad1006 ай бұрын
@@bobpierce115, I agree that the RARHOF is very “political”, but it is still an honor to get the nomination and be inducted. Bands like Def Leppard and Journey never thought they’d get in, but the fan vote put them both over the top, and they both accepted, not really for themselves, but for their fans. And I’m pretty sure Styx’s fans would put them over the top as well!

‘80s music videos had a way of being quite corny for their time, but I think part of that is because the medium was relatively new and growing in popularity (well, promo films for singles had been around since the 1960s, but it took the rise of MTV in the early 1980s for the music video to become a widely viewed form of promoting a single), so music videos had to be either straightforward or very memorable. This one was more on the fun side in concept, while sticking with the traditional performance video for at least part of the video. It’s really interesting, at least I think so, to study music videos of the late ‘70s and early ‘80s and compare and contrast them with more recent videos.

This couplet is just breathtaking, IMO. "I'm so tired of losin' I've got nothing to do and all day to do it. I go out cruisin' but I've no place to go and all night to get there." The internal rhyming of losin' / cruisin' and the desolation of "All day to do nothing, all night to go nowhere"... Just hits like a hammer to the chest.
