In the quest to make my Open U.P. the absolute one bike to rule them all, I needed to fill that gap between my beefy gravel wheels and my Extralite "road" wheels. Light, robust and cheap:is... can it be done?

Loved this video! I am going with Hunt X-wide Carbon wheels and the slightly wider Barlow Pass tires - all fitted to an OPEN WI.DE. I have some beefy Pirelli Centurato’s on 650b wheels for bike packing and rougher gravel. Think the new 700C set up will be really nice for the type of ride you are talking about. Hope Japan opens soon as I can’t wait to get back to Nagano. Again, great content and presentation - fun!!!

Haha! Thanks for doing what I was thinking; that is, pump in double the amount of sealant into my Switchback Hill UL too on my front. Well, for the rear (WTB Byways) too because both of them are losing air. I had just replaced the first set of tires on my Bokeh after 10,000 road kms and still having problems with air loss. Good thing I have a new bottle of Stans! Have fun!

I feel the same way about my bikes. I've got the Alligator cable housing on my 6.5 kg cervelo RS. But it is an XS size with 650c wheels. Not a lot of options for fast tires bigger than 25mm. Hence, it is now my dedicated wahoo kicker bike. Now, I ride my Norco Search XR with 1350 gm carbon wheels/babyshoe pass extra light tires and my 20 ounce stainless insulated mug (292 grams when empty, 900 grams when full) of delicious micro-roasted coffee(fits perfectly in a feed bag). Supple life / weight-weenie = never-ending journey(hopefully ;) Another nice video.

Agree pretty much on every key point here regarding the tires: yes, the René Herse Bon Jon Pass Extralight ride very smooth (I ride them with inner tubes, though). I like them more than the Panaracer Gravelking Slick which is way less supple and also quite a bit bouncy. But indeed: I'd also wouldn't trust the Extralights for any prolonged bits on unsealed surface. And yes: any tire supplier should strive for a tan sidewall like René Herse. That brown of the Panaracers really doesn't cut it. Not by a long shot.

My Rene Herse Barlow Pass and Steilacoom’s I went with stan’s no tube regular version 3oz and 3 months in still no need for more sealant, no leaks, even with going through some single track on the Steilacoom’s (these are endurance version). I left each tire laying down for an hour on each side before using. Going with 3oz instead of 2oz definitely sealed the tires better. Definitely my favorite riding tires. And the endurance version for the extra 30g weight can go through some tough single track terrain without issue while still being very supple.

Another fine entertaining video, Tobias. Just for the benefit of others reading the comments - these carbon rims from Xiamen, China are sold by dozens of companies, some with American brand decals on them. I've personally built up 8 wheels using rims with a similar spec to these. They were some of the best rims I've built among thousands of wheel builds. The finished wheels have very even tension, and are true and round. I've ridden a set similar to this on my Canyon for 3000 miles and they never needed truing. Too bad about the Rene Herse tires, they ride great but they always leak no matter what sealant Jan says to use this week...
@cliph6068

Rene Herse EL only tend to leak at first. Once you have sealant in them and ride a bit they're fine. They seem to seal especially quick with Orange endurance.

GKs FTW. This reminds me of the Pari Moto. I would not run these tubeless. The GKs are about the same weight and don’t leak except for the myriad of holes they eventually collect. ;-). Totally with you on this sort of "all-road" setup. I am running your other wheels (well my wheels, you know what I mean the XMC1200s) with 42mm GKs, as my everyday go anywhere wheels and I love this slick/slightly fat setup. Still noticeably slower than my ENVE 3.4s though.

Great videos, keep up the great work! I'm having a challenge deciding between the Farsports and Light Bicycle. I was wondering what was your deciding factor to go with Farspots? Also, any thoughts of using Tubulito tubes with Rene Herse tires? I've heard when you take sealant weight into account they can be pretty competitive on weight and that would remedy the leaking side wall issue.
@ridesofjapan
@ridesofjapan 3 жыл бұрын
At the time I was deciding, the farsports had the better weight combined with the exact rim dimensions I wanted and 180EXP hub. They both seem to change their lineup a lot, so the configurations might be different today. I don't use tubeless for weight reasons, it's only for the self-healing puncture abilities... tubolitos are in my spares kit. that being said, I would not get another pair of extralight Rene herse tires today if riding tubeless... too much hassle. (I retired the ones in the video, back to gravelkings) Cheers!

P Kim cheer mate! it’s all down what your priorities are, if you want something light and that’s a priority, the carbon Ti is unbeatable. Holes or no holes there not really any benefit apart from not needing to use tape, on the other hand of you are prone to breaking spoked it will make it harder to repair.
@pkim8745
@pkim8745 4 жыл бұрын
@@ridesofjapan Thx for your input. Well then, I'm all in. Let's go w/ Carbon Ti as long as it's fairly low maintenance and sturdy. I'll go w/ no-hole rims, sounds simpler to set up (this will be my first tubeless!) And, luckly I've never broken a spoke in my life :-)

Mate, I thought those insects at the end were going either eat you alive on the spot or fly off with you! Those wheels look great, definitely want! And, the spot where you had your coffee sure looked familiar!

Yep, recognized the hut and the view! That is a hell of a great climb! And, leads to some great descents!!

Thanks for bringing up these wheels from Farsports as I haven`t had them on my radar on my search for affordable carbon wheels. Since your video was released I bought my own pair at wheelsfar and they´re running flawless on my gravelbike. Seating the tires in the wheels was a pain in the..., as it was a very tight fit with between the No Hole Rim and the Wtb Resolute tires, but I knew what to expect after your video. Delivery was much longer as I had expected (approx. 1,5 months due to current situation) but it was okay form my point of view and the seller tried to keep up with information once i managed to get in contact with them. The weight was pretty accurate as they claimed the pair on 1300 g (+-15g) and I weigth them on 1311 g so within tolerance. Looking forward to see more stuff like that without digging holes in my pockets;)

I had very hard to pop the Bon Jon tires on my Zipp303S too, even with easylube from schwable. Fortunaly I followed your trick with a tube to pop the tire first. My all black bike looks great with these tan wall tires. I put 100ml in each tires, the front one holds air pretty well, the rear one looses pressure after a few hours. I only rode 10km, the tires may need more km to seal properly.

@@sanynava Hi, after a while the tires hold air pretty well, for the winter season I removed the sealant as I don't ride them. They hold air even without sealant. I will put fresh sealant as soon as I will ride them again. They roll very good. On my rims they turned out to be 37-38mm wide, a bit wider than 35mm announced (extra light + tubeless + 23mm internal width.

You should probably invest in a Topeak JoeBlow Booster or similar, if you don't have access to a compressor. Save yourself the hassle of seating the tyres.
