I have lived in Japan before, and in Japan, the hierarchical relationship is not as strict as in Korea, so anyone can be friends with anyone, whether they are older or younger, and no honorifics are used. I think it was hard for NI-KI to get used to Korean customs.

agreed, and its all the more tiring when niki is the youngest so there's no one to talk informally too. while i understand that's how it is in korea, i myself would be really uncomfortable having to conform to their strict and rigid hierarchical relationship statuses....

In Japan though you still call people senpai and kohai, though yes it is a little less strict. It’s still important to respect it.
