My daughter’s allergies to mosquitoes were so bad when she was little, our doctor prescribed her an EpiPen. When she was bitten near her eyes, they would swell shut. I remember her also being bitten around her ear and her ear swelled up many times its size. Our allergist and GP worried that if she was bitten near her throat the swelling could cause her airway to be cut off. Over the years though, her immune system has become less sensitive to mosquito bites so our GP told us that she no longer needs an Epipen. She has to start antihistamines a few weeks before mosquito season and continue taking it during the whole season (which in the part of Canada where we live, is pretty long) and this helps a lot because over the winter and early spring our bodies lose some of the immunity we build up against them. If your children have bad reactions to mosquitoes (or anything for that matter), please see a doctor. My husband works with a guy who lost his niece due to allergic reaction to mosquito bites. And please, if your child or you need EpiPens for your allergies, make sure to get new ones every single year. My husband’s coworker’s niece would likely be alive today if her EpiPen hadn’t expired. She realized that she was going into anaphylaxis, got her EpiPen and injected herself but it was too old to work. It’s so important to look into serious allergies and if needed, get and renew your Epipen every year (make your birthday the reminder to get a new EpiPen).
