Join me and Maggie as we head to the woods for a sub zero overnight camp during the 'Beast from the East' Siberian snow storm. We spend the night in my modified Polish Army Lavvu hot tent, with my 50. cal ammo can wood stove keeping us warm and toasty, cooking on the wood stove and eating our way through a British army 24hr ration pack - lovely! I hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching!

Simon, enjoyed your video. Just a thought for you. I was sationed in Germany with the U.S. Army when we changed from "C" rations to MREs. We would heat water like you did and heat the pouches in that water. Then use the hot water for coffee, we Yanks don't drink much tea, and it was a way to conserve water. We did this for quite a while before the Army informed us that wasn't a good idea. Seems the boiling water leached some rather harmful chemicals out of the plastic pouches. Didn't kill me but I thought you should know. I think the plastic used for the pouches has been changed since, I certainly hope so. You might want to check on your rations. It was during that time in my Army career that I also perfected the one canteen cup shave, shower, and shampoo. Order is important here. Be well.

Cheers William - don’t want shaving bristles in yer hair haha! That is a very good point about the MREs and one raised by a viewer before. I don’t know if they ever changed the packaging, would seam odd not to - why waste that precious water when you’re probably going to make tea or coffee to go with your meal anyway!! I’ve always done it that way and so far so good - no ill effects (yet!!! Hahaha) I should probably investigate further! Cheers, Simon.

Simon awesome video and outing, loads of room in that tent. I am hoping to get an Arctic 5 Man Bell tent as my prospector Tent is large for one or two guys and does eat wood in our winter conditions. The setup of yours is awesome. I leave a small sleigh at the tent now for hauling wood around during the day, makes it so much easier. Maggie looks like she enjoyed herself. I bought an ammo can and was going to make a stove with it but realized for our winters it would be fruitless in all reality. I have a new Kni-co that I need to burn in and use yet but waiting for the tent. I may build a small collapsible stove yet this summer. Awesome video once again. Cheers Fred
@simonablokeinthewoods
@simonablokeinthewoods 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Fred! A sleigh is a really good idea - luckily I didn’t have to go far to collect my firewood, and that little stove doesn’t get through much really, but if I was out for longer, that would definitely make life easier! As you said, for your ‘proper’ winters, itd be a bit in the small side! As for CO, I tested it when I first made it, the stove takes everything up the flue, as long as there is a decent amount of venting, I always leave an air intake to encourage draw. I probably aught to use my detector every time I use it for peace of mind!! Atb, Simon.

I know me and my hiking mates would eat our way through that ration pack gleefully...very impressed. I have an Inuit dog and dogs are like chocolate...I can never have just one. Love Newfies. So many dogs..so little time *sigh*

BASE 5ive , many KZfaq videos for ammo can stoves. I prefer a 120mm can; taller than .50cal allowing longer pipe sections and an internal baffles for better heat extraction. Stack a layer of damp firewood under the stove to dry prior to burning along with MRE pouches to prewar them.

That is so beautiful, it looks like everything is covered in icing sugar! 😍😍😍 Also, it looks like the British army is ridiculously well-fed. I may have made high-pitched noises of delight when I saw that teeny-tiny Tabasco bottle.

Keeping active, hydrated and with plentiful hot food is a big part of maintaining as much comfort in body and mind as possible when camping outdoors in inclement weather. Impressed that such a small stove produced so much heat, albeit with a large stockpile of prepared wood. Well done.
