Sir I want to thank you for taking the time to point out all the timing marks. This job isn't that bad IF one knows what to do. It took me taking my car apart 2 times and FINALLY finding your video to get my car back together. Runs like it's supposed to after watching your video. Thank you very much. Lol subaru dealer wanted 1200$ to do this. Local mechanic wanted 400. Now that I know how, I can do it myself for parts and a couple hours.

Hello again Jim. I must admit I skipped ahead in a few places. I don't own a Subaru and other channels have done this as well, but I always like hanging out for the commentary and to support your great channel. Keep up the good work, I find value in every video.

My husband and I have spent 3 weekends using these 2 videos as a guide, info is great except for the timing marks. Here’s what we have learned: When replacing the water pump, it probably won’t come with a good gasket or a seal. These are probably special order parts, so check the box and order them when you get the pump. The timing belt kit is probably just the pulleys, get a belt too. The timing marks on our 2002 Outback were lines on the rim of the cams, not the arrows he shows in the video. The center crank sprocket arrow points at almost 3 o’clock, the cam arrows point to about 2 o’clock. You should be able to see lines pointing to (or near) the top-dead-center marks on the engine with the arrows in these positions.

Can you tell me please how hard it was to remove the crank shaft bolt at 12:45 ? He goes and gets his air gun, that scares me a little bit. Also if you remember the socket size? Thank you so much.

First, the best thing you can do is a web search for your year and model plus "FSM" so for our 02 Outback I searched "2002 Subaru Outback FSM" and found a site within the top five results to download the Factory Service Manual for our car for free. We printed out all the stuff about the timing belt and water pump and posted it on the garage wall while we were working on it. it was invaluable reference. Second, you can get a tool on amazon for about $60 that makes the crank shaft bolt easy to remove. Search "Subaru Crank Pulley tool" we got one that was just a piece of steel cut in a ring with a long handle and tapped for large bolts. Thread the bolts in and they slide into the holes in the Crank Pulley, then you just use opposing pressure on your breaker bar to loosen the bolt. Also, our bolt is a 22mm.

Your explanation about Timing marks alignment 16:12 - 16:30 is wrong, the L&R cam sprockets have notches, you do not use the arrow. The arrow on the LH sprocket is used when checking/adjusting intake/exhaust valves clearance!!

Hi Jim, Do you ever cut the belt off, rather than taking one of the idlers off first? I always worry about binding the aluminum threads in the block if a pulley is removed with the tensioner engaged. Cutting the belt eliminate the risk of damaging the thread during removal.

What to do now? I have the exact car as the video and used this as a guide, now everything is ready for the new belt to go on and I find out that the arrows are supposedly not the correct timing marks to align before removing old belt. How do i fix this now that the belt is off before I cause any further damage?

great video! I think I also have a bad water pump. do you remember if this car was spraying coolant out alot in the area of the thermostat? that's what mine is doing sometimes it's only a drip. thanks!

That's a tell-tale sign. A lot of times these water pumps don't fail immediately- rather they slowly fail. Keep an eye on your temperature gauge. If it starts going up when you're idling, that's another sign.

OK, I'm at work and can't really watch this video right now. But I just lost my timing belt yesterday and was going about 70mph when it broke. It was a rough break and I haven't opened anything up yet. I was about to order the timing kits and other stuff, but I keep hearing that this is an interference motor. If it is then I know my valves are dead as well. Can u please shed some light on this...

jimthecarguy I was going to ask the same thing. I took 8 bolts off the intake of my truck to clean out the egr ports... and even those 8 bolts I couldn't remember which ones went where. Eric posted a video where he replaced a caravan engine... and somehow he knew where every bolt went. at least it appeared he did
