This is Subi Cheat Codes, a series made to guide you through repairing your blown up Subaru.
In PART 1, I break down engine removal into a step by step process to walk you through taking your engine out to repair it
Subarus have very compact motors (since they are Boxer engines) and almost everything is accessible from the top of the engine bay
They're also fully Aluminum and "light" enough to pick up (please don't do this, I only do it in a pinch)
Most engines and transmissions CAN be interchanged as the Subaru platform hasn't evolved significantly in near 30 years
You can literally bolt a 2018 STI engine into a 1990 Subaru Impreza
That being said, a lot of the knowledge shared in this video can be used on most Subarus even though there will be minor variances
Ive seen many "techs" take apart things that it is necessary to
This guide will save you time by avoiding anything that isn't important
I used to be a flat rate tech, NOT an hourly one, so I didn't mess around doing unnecessary things
If you have any questions NOT addressed in this video, leave a comment and I will do my best to answer
Thanks for watching!

One helpful thing is to pull the power to the fuel pump. And then crank the motor for a couple seconds. Itll clear the fuel out of the line so it doesn't spray when you disconnect the line. Also save that little plastic cap for the batt terminal posts so you dont have to worry about shorting your battery with the AC compressor.

@Jablk5Homeschool
@Jablk5Homeschool 16 күн бұрын
@@devinpaisley It took us about 4 days of slow and steady work. The thing that took the longest was sending out the heads to be machined. That took about 2 weeks lead time and ran us about $1200 but also included a valve job. One day to pull the engine and take apart the heads. One day to replace the clutch and deep clean the engine compartment and the block. One day to reassemble the engine. One day to put the engine back into the car. Our project cost about $2500 which included a clutch, new timing kit, new water pump, thermostat, head gaskets, oil, coolant. On a side note, this took considerable physical strength and some new tools. We really needed a digital torque wrench, wobble socket, lots of brake cleaner and shop towels, gojo hand cleaner. We also followed the Speed Academy video, "How To Replace Subaru Leaking Headgaskets SOHC EJ25". This was incredibly helpful.

I do a lot of these in the Salt belt, a trick for separating the eng/trans that works every time is drilling a hole at the parting line at the top someplace where the 2 are pretty close/even. Once you have a hole, use a taper punch to pry them apart. Once broken free start spraying penetrant down to the dowel areas and you can now get a more suitable prying tool in between the eng/trans.

@@steinfabgarage I had a "budget" of 4-hours and it took me 6 yesterday, so not too bad. "Not my first rodeo" for an engine pull but it still helped a lot to know about stuff you mentioned, for example not needing to remove the hood or radiator, tying the accessories back with bungee cords, etc. The T/C definitely would have come out with the engine if I didn't take your advice and keep in the tranny. The only unexpected thing was there is a stud/nut on each side of the bell housing. Those long studs were interfering with lifting the motor out, so I had to back them out of the engine while it was hanging and it was a PITA. You might even have mentioned it but I didn't remember. It might have been easier to remove the studs from the engine while I was under there, BUT they might not have cooperated that way either. Mine is a 2003 Baja A/T. Thanks again, and your place is cool !

I inspected the chambers with a tiny camera and I saw where one valve definitely hit the piston. I also have a 2010 legacy with a rotted subframe. My question is can I use the 2010 motor in the 2005?
@steinfabgarage
@steinfabgarage 21 күн бұрын
That’s a tough one, not easily. The 05 prolly doesn’t have VVL, so you’d have to lock out the rockers (video in the works) and the oil pan is different, so you’ll have to swap thoose, and drill some holes out as the 2010 had larger bolts for the aluminum pan. Your best bet is to fix what you have, it just needs heads and a timing belt, or valves and a lap job/ valve job

Thank you for the video. I am considering a used Subaru but was concerned about the issues that require motor removal. After watching this, I am not that concerned anymore, but nothing ever comes apart that easy for me. Do you ever pull motor and transmission together or always separate, if no reason to pull transmission. Old cars we generally pull them together because it's easier to put back in.
@steinfabgarage
@steinfabgarage 7 ай бұрын
Yeah headgaskets are “normal maintenance” on the old EJ motors. If I pull them together it’s generally out the bottom dropping the subframe. So no i don’t out the top. If everything’s in order, it will just add more headaches. Trans fluid coming out, diff fluid from pulling the CV shafts, etc etc. Ain’t worth it IMO

@steinfabgarage
@steinfabgarage Жыл бұрын
I just send it and let stuff slide or roll, you only need like 4” before the jack can be lowered, and the transmission conveniently rests on the crossmember. I do recommend putting a spacer under the transmission before lowering. A small chunk of 2x2, or 2x4 on each side, if done correctly, no jack is needed upon installing the motor, I mate the engine to the trans, go up on the engine hoist, and remove the blocks of wood
@steinfabgarage
@steinfabgarage Жыл бұрын
2011 legacy should have a center mount in front of the timing belt cover, and no “motor mounts” but rather transmission mounts. Getting the lower bellhousing bolts can be a nightmare, but no jacking of the transmission is required, I’ve only done a 6spd as I’m scared to touch anything with a CVT cause they always blow up 😂

@@bierlyynn jack under the front diff to get the motor mounts over the crossmember, might need a 2x4 block, if yours has the CVT and the trans mounts (instead of the motor mounts being on the engine) disregard that, should slid together pretty easily. hahaha for no reason I sold my outback to an x friend a year ago. Hes called me 8 times sjnce he drove it with no water till it stopped. Water pump gasket?? Not me////his mechanic. Then a week later thermostat. Still looseing water? Head gasket needed now.im figureing. Hes probably been letting idots work on it/guessing wrong. Also/he should have stopped when he saw the temp! Should I feel responsible?

Nope, it’s a Subaru, it’s gonna need headgaskets. They literally all do, till the chain drive Yamaha motor that’s good. (FB series)

You should watch a Wrx video it sounds like, I don’t touch the clutch forks. They’re push type, not pull like a Wrx or STI
