The Subaru Forester is an SUV that competes with the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V, but with standard AWD, it has a rugged edge. What is the new Forester like compared to other great crossovers? Tom drives the updated 2.5-litre Forester Premium in Sydney to find out.
What do you think of the new Forester? Do you think it beats a Mazda CX-5 or Volkswagen Tiguan? Let me know all your thoughts in the comments.

Nice review...Thanks! I’ve had my S model since last October and I love it. Compared to the 14 year old Toyota Kluger it replaced it’s a dream to drive on the open road. “Corners like it’s on rails” as they say in the movies. I watched my wife take an 85kmh bend at 110 some time back (with my knuckles turning white), with absolutely no drama! The Forester went around sitting almost flat. Not that I recommend doing this as routine; some 85 bends are more forgiving than others! Came through the high country from Vic to ACT the other day. The Forester handled 100 km of winding corrugated gravel road with ease and comfort. The most comfortable driving I’ve experienced under those conditions, and that said after a working life spent in mineral exploration all over Oz in most every kind of vehicle.... As a safe comfortable family wagon with real rough road ability l highly recommend the 2019 Forester.

We bought one a month ago and absolutely love it. It is so roomy and comfortable and has great visibility. Can't wait to test it out on a long Oz road trip next year. The safety features in this car are unbelievable, which is important to us, and it offers great value for money with the features that it has.

Another great review guys. Very well balanced and highlights a lot of the points why we are picking up the new Forester. Despite saying I'd never be one of those suburban SUV drivers our 2.5i Premium is set to be delivered next month. With our first child on the way it ticked too many boxes to ignore. I originally had a 2nd hand 3.6R Premium Subaru Outback or a 2nd hand ZB Commodore Tourer wagon (the new Commodore is depreciating quickly which means there are some great near new bargains about) at the top of the list. My wife wasn't a fan of the Commodore and wouldn't drive it and when we went to test drive the Outback the new Forester caught our eye and seemed to make more sense than the current Outback. Really competitive value for all the features you get and was enough to make me decide to buy a brand new car for the first time.
@chasingcars
@chasingcars 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks PB. Good to hear the story of how you ended up with the Forester. As I mentioned, the 2.5i Premium is the variant to buy, so that's excellent. I really like the ZB Tourer - and yes there will be some huge bargains - but I can see why more people would be happier behind the wheel of this comfy, straightforward SUV.

A good all over review of the Forester. One thing you could mention is the fact that this runs on regular unleaded petrol while most of the others in this class use premium fuel. In addition, the Forester has a full size spare plus the all important eyesight system. Keep up the good work.

Very good review Tom, always enjoy your car reviews. Recently there was a review on all the top SUVs in Australia....was in the The Age newspaper recently. Under the review they look at safety, handling, braking, etc. Subaru Forester came up top followed by Tucson and Sportage together. Coming in last on the review was the Rav4 but they did mention a new model is coming up shortly.
@chasingcars
@chasingcars 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Jeff! I think the Forester should be commended for its rangewide safety offer, but for my preferences, I think both Tucson and Sportage have better-tuned suspensions and altogether more engaging handling dynamics. As for RAV4, that car is launching here in Australia in May and you can be sure we’ll have in-depth content on it.

After going through the pre-purchase angst of selecting a new car, I landed on the 250i-S, and I'm very happy I did. I've never owned a Subaru before, so what really struct me is the handling, the AWD system is awesome. The view out of this thing is fantastic too. The engine is adequate and the CVT transmission is as smooth as a babies bum. The Eyesight system is spooky good. It's comfortable and roomy in all seating positions. The headlights are very good. The few thing that erk me, are you don't have option of permanently disabling the, Auto Engine Start function, the rearview mirror is basic, there is no Starlink or Mysubaru app support in Australia and the tail gate has no proximity gesture system to open it. Real first world woes.

Man I like your style! Not just repeating Subaru’s sales description of their product. Some actually honest, critical analysis. One thing I’d be willing to bet...the forester’s speed and handling wouldn’t be that far off the Mazda CX-5. People make that car out to Be “heads and shoulders” above the comp...
@chasingcars
@chasingcars 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Matthew! Hmm, not sure. I do think the CX-5 is dynamically a few levels higher than the Forester, and not just because other people think that, too. I make all my own assessments. That said, the Forester is way roomier, and much more practical.

My dad test drove this Forester the other day and he finds the suspension shock absorbers too uncomfortable to the point he got a headache after driving it. I also noticed that when you drove the Forester, I can see the camera shaking more than when I watched your other reviews. If I may ask, what do you mean by too floaty and too softly damped in the Forester? Does this type of suspension contribute to a lot of damping movement in the car? I am also with my dad going to test out the Mazda CX-5, would the ride quality and suspension be better?

I own a 2017 Forester. Agree that the new model is an improvement internally but externally it just looks unresolved. I'd go so far as to say that the updated model has better proportions and lines to the eye. I don't know what the designers were thinking with the chrome around the front fog lights. As for the rear lights.....well say no more. The wheels also look to small for the body somehow. Proportionally it just doesn't look right. I am not sure if the designers were pandering to the US market when they settled on this design. For me I'll keep my 2017 until a more refined external appearance evolves and a more lively engine makes an appearance.

As good as the interior and versatility may be, that aspirated 2.5-litre petrol engine is average at best and will struggle with a two plus capacity load. Plus that exterior styling looks dowdy too. No optional diesel or turbo petrol will also hurt sales. There are much better engine options out there from similarly priced competitors.
@chasingcars
@chasingcars 5 жыл бұрын
Agreed there BP. Not a fan of the styling and I think offering just one engine (that is pretty outdated) is a mistake.

I drove my family (myself and 3 adult passengers) in this car on the hilly hunter valley roads and it surprisingly still had enough power and grips the road well

BP I’ve had my new Forester for 2 weeks now and the engine is actually pretty punchy, yes at times you do have to give it a little kick but it always gets the job done, even when fully loaded on a road trip. Will hurt sales? They already seem to be selling well I’m seeing new Foresters everywhere where I live.

would be nice if the auto tailgate detected an obstacle that it would hit and not open; instead of open and smash against it.
@chasingcars

That would be nice. I can't think of one that has a sensor for that at present... apart from Tesla's Falcon Wing doors. Maybe somebody else knows of a car with this feature?
@kodessa
@kodessa 5 жыл бұрын
@@chasingcars I don't think there is a car that detects outward obstacles; only obstacles in the path of a closing tailgate (I could be wrong with my quick Google search). But coming from an old ~2000's car, I would assume that an auto opening tailgate could detect an obstacle like a wall, fence or pole. I guess car manufactures don't account for SUV drivers reversing their car into a parking spot. I don't want to babysit the tailgate when I want it to open; I want it to be smarter than me and judge the situation since I'm going to be carrying things to the back. It would be nice if Subaru included an accessory that lines the edge of the tailgate for impact. (Sorry for the long message but this is weirdly annoying to me.)

We went with a Hyundai Tucson highlander over the Forester and Mazda CX-5. We almost went with a Forester, but having the split display at the front was too much.

Fair point Rebecca, the interior screens won't be for everyone. Plus, as I've said before on this channel, the Tucson Highlander is a great car. Did you buy petrol or diesel?

Chasing Cars - we went the Diesel engine. My husband and I go out of town a lot, so it suits us. I love the space in the cabin and the soft leather, the only thing I wish the highlander had (that was featured in the special edition) is the 360 camera view.

Hyundai is a Korean car company, under the skin deep I personally don’t think it’s up to what Subaru has but that’s every one freedom of choice

Narong Thaipun - that’s what we thought as well. However, Subaru has done away with their Diesel engine and driving it didn’t feel as great to drive.

True, but I'd say that aligns with what most buyers in the segment want these days. It can still do light off-roading just fine!
