I am doing the timing belt, idlers, tensioner, water pump and taking it a few steps deeper. It seems everyone who does these video's on this job fails to cover the oil pump issue. Yesterday I pulled my oil pump and the O-ring and main seal were still good but two of the screws in the steel back plate were loose and one had backed out 1/16th of an inch. Be sure and pull the oil pump when you do this job every time. New O-ring, New Main Seal. Clean the pump and housing really well. I used Super Clean, rinsed it well with hot water and heated the oven to 250 to finish thoroughly drying it. Reassemble with "Ultra Grey Advanced Formula Maximum Torque Gasket Maker" on the oil pump sealing surfaces and "Blue Loctite" on all internal and external fasteners. I also use Blue Loctite on the water pump fasteners and all other fasteners as I reassemble things. Keep in mind: Blue loctite $6 O-ring $5 Main Seal $10 Advanced Grey Gasket Maker (Large Calking style tube) $20 So for about $40 additional dollars over all the other work you just did you can take the final step in making sure the job lasts for 100K Miles. If your low rpm oil pressure goes it's all gotta come back apart.

Also always make sure to do the head gasket while you are there or you’ll be doing it again. Subaru head gaskets are only good for about 100,000 miles.

Your original video is awesome, I purchased the TKF-011 Aisin kit, for my 2007 Subaru Legacy with 2.5 N/A EJ engine. It has 140,000 and belt has never been changed. I’m doing it next week after I get all my parts. $300 for Kit includes water pump.

FYI I did a 2011 OB with 167K miles on it, belt had no flaws, same bearing as yours had that noise, tensioner had some grease around the edges. Where I did find problems was the V belt (Serpentine) as one idler had slop in it and the tensioner had spin noise. The hardest part was the Cam shaft pulley which I bought the special wrench tool for. That made that much easier. My waterpump looked new no issues- like you I changed it anyway. ONE thing those with higher mileage Subaru's need to check is their rocker cover spark plug seals. Mine were hard as a rock with massive amounts of oil into the spark plug seats. The plugs looked ok (changed at 100K) but that oil was inside the coils and really could have caused an ignition problem or breakdown. That job was a bigger pain in the butt than the Timing belt job. The key to removing the drivers side Rocker cover was to unbolt the engine mount to slightly jack up the engine so the cover could be removed.

I did a timing belt job on my 08 legacy at 100,000 miles. Someone working in advance auto parts insisted that all I need to do is replace the belt, he said that the bearings and water pump and tensioner will last 200,000 miles. I just did the timing job again at 200,000 miles. So it was true the only thing that needed to be replaced at 100,000 was the belt.

My 2004 Subaru Forester S ran to 200 KM with original belt. I sprayed belt conditioner in it until the tensioner malfunctioned. It did not destroy the engine. I put the new kit in and it runs again. The timing belt can outlast the water bump and tensioner, pulleys.
@spankeyfish
@spankeyfish 6 жыл бұрын
For people replacing the tensioner, I'm willing to bet that the bearing will start to fail long before the hydraulics do and it should be possible to remove the pulley and press the bearing out of it. It'll be a standard metric size and load rating and there's probably a number stamped or lasered onto it that you can identify it from.

On the water pump, it would of been cool if you could press it apart and check how far the two halves of the rubber shaft seal have worn, compared to a new one. Usually the bearings last long due to the belt tension being kept well under control, but the two seals are pressed together by a spring and gradually wear down based on spin amount plus friction depending on how good the coolant is. Sometimes you find out by replacing a radiator cap that can now hold 15-17# but not that old water pump seal, so it starts leaking.

We dodged a bullet as the valves were fine and the car runs better than ever! Follow the manufacture's suggestion even changing it early.... say 90k miles

I appreciate your video; thanks. I have an "Check Engine" idiot light, in my 2002 Forester, with 202.000 miles in it (yeah, I know...). The analyzer tells me "Knock Sensor". I did replace sparks (3 years old), and its PCV. I can't remove the knocking sensor (risk to brake its bolt; frozen solid), but I hear "noises" at acceleration (;ole pinging, or the ball bearing in the PCV rattling, kind of). Could it be that the Timing Belt has a slack? Your insight and/or suggestions would be much appreciated; I am a retired person with limited income, mind you... Thanks.

Some cars they recommend replacing timing belt every 80 or 60 thousand miles. If they told customers that these timing belt cars are high maintenance, nobody would buy them. Especially when timing chain cars go over 250 or 300 hundred thousand miles. Overall timing belt engines are higher maintenance and I try to avoid. I've seen VW toss a belt at 78k miles. Subaru are rare around here and dealers are only in big cities, 80 to 100 miles away. While GM, Ford, Chrysler, Toyota, and Nissan have dealerships everywhere. I have seen a few SUBARUs, but they come into the shop from interstate on tow truck and most need major engine repair or a new motor. SUBARUs main selling point is all wheel drive which isn't needed in the south, but Subaru high $$$$$$
