Unlock the Potential of Dye Sublimation: Polyester Blends and Color Variations
Expanding Your Dye Sublimation Horizons: Beyond 100% Polyester
Welcome, garment decorators! Today, we're diving into the world of dye sublimation. Did you know that you can sublimate on more than just 100% white polyester t-shirts? I'm AJ, and joining me is Kirk. We're here to show you how to work with different blends of t-shirts and a wide range of colors to expand your creative possibilities.
Exploring 100% Polyester
We started with the classic 100% polyester t-shirts, pressing the same design on white, columbia blue, and dark grey shirts. The results are fascinating. With 100% polyester, the colors remain vibrant and steadfast even after washing, with no fading. The white t-shirt showcased super vibrant colors, while the columbia blue and dark grey t-shirts offered unique and cool effects, making each color distinct and appealing.
Trying Out Tri-Blends
Next, we experimented with tri-blends. As someone who loves the softer feel of these shirts, I, Kirk, went for a 75% polyester, 13% cotton, and 12% rayon blend. These shirts provide a great alternative for those who prefer a softer touch. While you might notice some fading after washing, the overall look remains impressive, giving your customers a wider range of options.
Mixing It Up with 50/25/25 Blends
We also tested a 50% polyester, 25% cotton, and 25% rayon blend. This tri-blend style is not only soft but also gives a fresh, washed-out look after a few washes, which is quite popular these days. The feel is excellent, and the pre-faded look adds character to the garment, making it look broken in from the start.
Pressing Techniques
When pressing these blends, AJ prefers using thermo tape, particularly the green kind, as it’s visible on any color garment. On the other hand, I like using a light spray to tack down the paper, which helps avoid any ghosting during the pressing process. Both methods yield great results, so you can choose what works best for you.
Pricing Considerations
Using higher-end garments like tri-blends means you can charge more for your finished products. When pricing these premium items, remember to factor in the cost of your time, inks, and paper. Offering your customers a range of high-quality garments enhances your portfolio and allows you to get the best value for your work.

Okay, so here is the ultimate question - I noticed you are wearing two tee shirts with the white one on. I've ordered quite a few blanks and the problem I'm seeing is that as a female, I can't see to find a white tee that will work with sublimation that isn't see through. Unless you wear two tee shirts.

Unfortunately, this can be a common issue when working with polyester garments as they tend to be thinner and lower quality. If you are having trouble finding quality polyester garments to sublimate with, I would recommend trying DTF transfers on a thicker cotton blend!

how does that high heat and long amount of time not leave a fade mark on the t with color? We use heat press low temp tags at 290 for 10 sec and they leave a slight faded mark on darker fabrics sometimes. Thanks for your help!

How're you guys printing on the triblends without scorching the rayon? I've attempted this on a triblend am getting stuck with a distinct shine and platen shaped box where the heat press came down and am not sure what adjustments to make to avoid it.

Hello! I would recommend starting on lower temperatures and bumping up the heat slowly as you go along, using less heat is going to be better on a blend with rayon! I would also avoid using too much pressure, as this can cause some scorching. I would also recommend the use of heat press pillows (www.heattransferwarehouse.com/heat-press-pillows-1/) and heat press teflon sheets (www.heattransferwarehouse.com/heat-press-teflon-release-sheets/) if you are not already using them. These materials help to disperse heat and pressure evenly, which assist in eliminating press marks. I hope you find this helpful! If you have any other questions, you can always reach out to our customer service team at customerservice@heattransferwarehouse.com!

I know the colours aren't no way as near vibrant to the white 100% poly t shirt compared to the other lighter coloured 100% poly t shirts but can you not do an underlayer of white so no matter what colour the 100% poly t shirt is, the print will always be vibrant and as close to colour matched?

If you were selling these retail, would you do so with instructions or a warning stating that they'll fade a bit more after the first wash? Or would you pre-wash them (perhaps with plain water only)?

well, i have no idea, i dont have a T-Shirt bussiness but as a customer i would be disappointed when my shirt would look different after the first wash, so i would go for the pre wash. I am doing sublimation and HTV as a hobby and probably the cheap way of screen printing with vinyl as a mask in the future, just for the fun of it. I didnt even know that the vintage effect was so easy to do with tri blend. The Thing is that many people dont like polyester shirts but the tri blend could be a good compromise. HTV has just a totally different look and wont look really vintage because of the strong color of the foil and the thickness.

I’d be cautious to prewash peoples shirts as some have allergies to certain detergents. I’m just up front with my customers. I ask if they want the image to fade or not, then I press onto shirt that corresponds with said request.

Did you mean layer dye sublimation transfers with each other? Also if you are repressing something that is already sublimated, it could reactivate the inks and cause the original transfer to be damaged.

Yes, but it will have a very faded vintage look, the inks do not fuse to cotton parts of a mixed top. When you heat press polyester the fibres open and allows the ink in then seals shut...this does not happen with cotton and the more cotton in a mix top the lighter and faint the print
