Hey this has nothing to do with diving I know but what year were you talking about? I grew up in Okinawa but, although in a hot area for earthquakes, never actually felt one myself. My family moved there a month before the large 2011 earthquake/tsunami, but I was only 4 and don't remember anything or if the island was even affected. Just wondering if an earthquake can be felt better on land or underwater. Must be horrifying!

Yea it’s 100% a surface ship. It’s also not a sub pulse train which gives it away. Plus the DB at which it was transmitted at means it’s reasonably close, and that water is too shallow for a Sub to be in.

If you're on one end of the pool and a friend is on the other though, you could tap something hard against the side of the pool, or knock two rocks together, and the person on the other side of the pool would hear it like its right beside their head.

I'm originally from the Midwest never been to the Ocean until I went to Miami. Went to one of the beaches to swim. First thing I noticed was damn it's salty. But the thing that got me was this very high pitch sound. It was constant. I have no idea what it was. I was there for an hour or so and I could tell when boats go by but there was always this high pitch sound. Is that normal back ground noise of the ocean? Or something else. Never heard anything like that in Lake Michigan.

AUTEC Bouy is awesome for fishing, until a submarine shows up and runs you away. Grew up fishing the bouy. done a few shark dives there too with Stuart Cove. definitely the scariest dive you can do, no bottom, and a lot of current. also the chain runs to the bottom, and dissapears into nothingness. i call it the "shark blender" cause if you look up, you are in the middle of a swirl of sharks cirlcing the bouy. its pretty epic. this is an opean ocean dive, so the wildlife is out in full force.

@@Nordstatic Sound is measured in decibels, sonar can send a signal with so many Decibels that all the energy created from the wave (sound is a wave with energy) is enough to kill a human if close enough. I don't know how it is with marine animals, I'm sure a lot would die if a sub used sonar and they were within 200 meters distance, but perhaps the high water pressure allowed for a higher tolerance of pressure change (which is the wave)

Since the sound/pressure waves of the sonar ping compress air much more than water, it would damage our lungs and bowels more than aquatic animals that don't have those gas pockets present. Do you understand how this actually kills? I understand it is... sound. Of course. So it's... vibrations? Or something? Through the water? @@TemenosL the speed of sound in water is 1500 metres per second So imagine an immensely powerful pressure wave (since sound is varying pressure, and sub sonar is 200+dB sound) hitting your entire body at 1500m/s. 200db is something like 6.5 million Pascal's of peak pressure according to a quick Google, or 945PSI. So the equivalent of getting crushed by several tonnes instantaneously. 200dB in the air can kill you, nevermind in the sea. Terrifying 😅

The systems have to be locked out / tagged out any time our people are in the water. At night, the lookouts on ships at anchor will sometimes get on a bullhorn and state very clearly into the darkness that the sonar can move the water a full inch and kill divers, and to stay away.

As the soundwave exits the apparatus into the water around, areas of high pressure and low pressure are created (basic concept of a way with its peaks and valleys). In the areas of low pressure, due to the enormous amplitude of the wave, quite a high vaccum is created in which the water boils even when cold (the lower the pressure, the lower the boilng point of all liquids)

@@Robisquick Whales are nothing compared to active sonar pings. You're supposed to get out of the water when you hear one. That ping prolly came somewhere really far away. Be within hundreds of meters within an active sonar and you'd suffer critical damage throughout your entire body

If you've ever been underwater with the right gear, the sounds of the reef come alive. These animals use sound to communicate, just because they have different organs (such as lateral lines) to perceive sound instead of mammalian ears does not mean they don't hear well. They hear very well.

Yeah. It's no wonder whales they beach themselves if their senses and brains get damaged by sonar pings like this.

I think that low pitched ping like you hear in submarine movies is from a WW2 era sonar.

Sonar/Radar actually do something called chirping (clue is in the name,) where it runs through a spectrum of frequencies (high to low/low to high,) to give a greater resolution of the intended target in the boresight. The specific frequencies they propagate give the receive signal a "signature" so that they can pick it out of all the other mess/noise. Really interesting tech!

Night diving is already creepy enough without some loud other-worldly screech

@@2mjz84 Sonar and radar is heavily regulated because it can kill both people and animals... Get too close and it can heat things up quite a lot, the disorientation of your inner ear fluids, disorientation she the following headache is enough to kill you though (confused in a dangerous environment)

You can count on any mammal that uses sonar to find it's food being really F-ed up. Either that or it instantly has a mental picture of whatever is in the water within a 5 mile radius.

SOSUS stands for Sound Surveillance System. The US has SOSUS arrays placed all over the ocean to detect enemy submarines. Sonabouys can also be launched from planes and/or helicopters. There is a company here in Central Florida who builds sonabouys for the USN.

Melt isn't the right word, since the effect is acoustic not thermal. More accurately it pulverizes your internal organs. Like the shockwave from an explosion, the pressure wave from sonar is loud enough it basically just crushes your internal organs as the wave passes through them.

Nope...Passive sonar is how we actively hunt or track other vessels. My sub never once used active sonar...The only time I've ever heard a sub ping was in videos of the SAR attempt to save the USS Thresher incident.

Fun fact, the newest generations of submarines are so quiet that they are actually almost quieter than the ocean's background noise. This means that soon the most advanced submarines will be so quiet that passive sonar will not be able to detect them even at near-zero range. Active sonar may have to be used more frequently because of this.

Andros Island! The most amazing thing was the entire place smelked like cocoa butter and hermit crabs were everywhere. Im glad someone mentioned it since a lot of the comments seemed like they were talking put their asses 🤣😂 we ran our sub through underwater minefield laying exercises there years and years ago, but we didn't do any active sonar.
