I don't think the solution is to start getting rid of subscriptions en masse. Rather, I think there needs to be a new model. Something a LOT like what XenForo does. You pay once for a year of updates, but once your sub lapses, you can STILL DOWNLOAD all the builds you had access to before at any time. You only need to pay again if you want to get access to that shiny new massive content update or security update. I feel this both funds maintenance while pushing developers to still incentivize their product with new features, or at least improvements to old ones while still giving customers who paid access to the stuff that they already bought. This also relieves the pressure on new customers since they know they'll always have access to the stuff they've bought, which makes sales more plentiful.

Problem with Spotify and Netflix is that if the record/film company pulls the rights to the film you're left with nothing. I will always get a physical copy of albums and film I love as they are yours forever.

Elliott Henderson What I always find strange, is that Spotify’s (& other music streaming sites) library is MASSIVE compared to Netflix’s (and other video streaming sites) Pretty much every song, at least by a modern artist, is available on Spotify, indefinitely. Whereas Netflix, has a surprisingly small library of movies (when you think how many are out there, and have been made), plus, titles only seem to last a few months then they’re gone

People looked at me weird when I told them I dropped $60AUD on a CD (not a widely available album). Told them I wanted the highest sound quality and to support the artist...and the warm fuzzy feeling of having it on the shelf instead of in a folder on a hard drive.

I was subscribed to spotify, then realized I only listen to the same 50-100 songs so in 2 years adding up to $10x24/months = $240. I realized it was better to buy each song or album and also not have to worry about Spotify losing licenses for certain songs or artists that I enjoyed over the years

in addition, your favorite artists get very little from spotify plays. if you really cared about funding the artist, you could buy their albums on bandcamp, DRM FREE, and in multiple file formats with the highest quality wavs!

I like the perpetual license subscription model, like used for some IDEs, and indeed Sketch. You pay for one year of updates (minor and major). When the subscription expires, you can perpetually use the latest version released during the subscription period, or pay for another year of updates. The benefit of the user is that they can choose to “buy” the software once (plus updates for a year) with a one-year non-renewing subscription and use it until it inevitably breaks (since operating systems evolve) or choose to continually pay the developers if they like the updates (and thus the work put in). This model is ideal for large apps that have room to grow, as is the case for most professional software. Small utility apps like an AR measuring app should completely stay away from subscription models.

That's my favourite model as well. I have used some software for over 10 years. While using it I have seen competitors show up, take over, and then die completely as they were not updated for Win10 - meanwhile the oldies still function. It's odd. I'd like to support the tools that I like, but most don't have subscriptions, and most of the tools that do are not tools that I like.

It's funny that people are complementing the smoothness of transition to the sponsorship message. Some platforms/content (like Hello Internet and other podcasts) make the transitions obvious so that it's clear what is and isn't an ad. It's even a requirement for TV.

I'm fine with software _adding_ a subscription option. It's when they _force_ you into a subscription that I have a problem. MS Word is a great example of this. It is _absolutely not worth_ buying the new version every year, hasn't been for a decade. Home users buy it once, use it for 5 years or longer without needing to upgrade. But when MS _only_ sells it as a subscription, users have to pay the cost of a new version in subscription fees every year, even though the changes are not worth it. Great for MS, bullshit for the user.

Admiral_Awesome That’s not the point in the video. The people doing the updates were doing them either way. Now the company charges for it and I’d be very surprised if anyone doing the updates was being paid any more than they were before they started charging.

People have got to be paid for their work, if you are a small company with the capactiy to be developing one software product at a time, you can't afford to sacrifice time on other projects to update for free. Again, I refer to my analogy, or better yet, you work somewhere full time, you change company to work full time, but your old company decides it wants you to work on their stuff for free in your own time? You'd say no, so that's exactly the same as asking someone to perpetually update software for free.

Something I think every time I watch these videos: "Ugh, why does the ad use the exactly same tone as the rest of the video?" It's kind of a breach of trust, in a way. I don't expect you to change it, but I figured it was worth mentioning.

The issue is that because of the profits of software as service other industries that have nothing to do with software are now trying via various excuses to push software into their products. For an instance, the video has mentioned lamps as a product which doesn't suite a subscription service. But what about a colour changing lamp that is controlled by an app from your smartphone??? This lamp will be a part of a subscription servcie. So will be your refrigerator and your private car and so on... With the idea of 'internet of things' everything is software so everything is a subscription service.

Yeah nah, not gonna convert me on the Adobe thing. I'm so glad I bought CS6 before subscriptions came in. It'll last me a long time for what I need from it. I'm sure professionals need more, but if I'm just a hobbyist, I can't afford the goddamn subscription, and they didn't give people like me any options. Just let me buy one off software, and then give support and/or ongoing upgrade programs as an OPTIONAL subscription. It doesn't make financial sense for me to subscribe briefly either, because I might use the program for one day one month, and then one day the next month, but end up paying two whole months? For the amount of time I've owned CS6, pretty sure I've come out on top financially, and without the stress of keeping track of subscriptions. The one regret is that I didn't also buy the Premier and After Effects part of it, but I just use HitFilm Express instead now. My old computer probably isn't capable of anything more hardcore anyway, and I can't afford a better one just now. And maybe you'll be like, "but what about compatibility, CS6 won't work forever!" Yeah well I'm keeping my old computer for as long as it'll work, and when my operating system is no longer supported by Microsoft updates, I'll just take it offline. Hopefully by then I'll have the money to buy another computer for online stuff, but the chances of me having the money to upgrade ALL my software is pretty slim, so I'll just use my old computer for things like Photoshop. Bit of a fuck around, but I already do this with my 2009 MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard which has all my old music software on it. People who upgraded theirs to Lion etc had compatibility issues, but mine runs just fine, and I'll be keeping it that way for as long as it functions. And yeah, for security reasons, I just don't have it online. No big deal. I don't need the latest and greatest music software to keep making what I make. It'll definitely suck when my old computers die, but I'm squeezing as much value out of them as I can.

DestroyerMariko LOL I do the exact same thing. I refused to update the computer I've got Photoshop on to Windows 10. I bought another computer because the old one was on its last leg; I only use that computer when I need Photoshop or Premiere Pro. If I'm going to pay so much money for a product, I want to own it and be able to continue using it for a long time. I can't even imagine paying $52 a month for it, only to have access removed as soon as I stop paying!

Exactly.. in many cases a software does its job without issues and is operating well until the OS it is running on gets changed or way outdated. The software is written well, the user is satisfied, no development is needed. The next time the developer is needed is when some major change is made on the OS or when the OS is no longer supported. By that time a newer version of the OS is available and the developer has already made a new version of that particular software, selling again. Of course this will be trickier with the Win 10 only getting updates instead of a e.g. Win 7 -> Win 10 transition, but this monthly fee-thing has already started before Win 10.

I still use MS Office 2000, which still does everything I need. It`s had essentially one update to make it read xlsx files. People have just been suckered into buying new software with each new PC, being allowed to believe they`re actually breaking the law by continuing to use their own product. What complete wankers companies like Microsoft are.

It's a valid point. I also use LibreOffice, which is the opening-files default: just some things in MS Office 2K (particularly around search and replace) I find more comfortable. ;-) But I'm only using it to open my own files.

Olivia: Yes, they say it peaked at 2003. I didn't adopt it because - if Memory serves - styles worked in a different way, which had a bad effect on authoring WinHelp projects.

But that is when you don't use office apps professionally. Newer versions have a lot of nifty tricks that can make everything you do much faster. Imagine having to style a 100 paged word document on 2003, that was a nightmare!!! 2010 and above have really useful options like styling and multileveling that can make your job so much easier!

Problem: I use about 20 different programs to write my novels. This includes the word processing, image creation, proofreading, and learning anything I need to know for a given story. Subscription business models will one day make it impossible for me to do my work simply because each of those 20 programs will cost 10 dollars a month. That's 200 a month, or 2/3rds of my income from the novels I write. Subscriptions may allow programs to be sustained more easily, but they don't let people sustain their interests over the long term.

+Sanguinius I use several of them, in the following order, to replace a human editor. Hemmingway Editor (highlights awkward phrasing and hard to read sections. Requires you manually alter them.) LanguageTool (Semi-automated correction of technical errors, some context based spellchecking.) GradeProof (Context based spellchecking, helps recommend replacements for weak/passive language.) Grammerly (Final polish, removes technical errors introduced by other bots.)

You won't need 20 different programs in the future. Each program will do more. WinXP has firewall, Win10 has anti-virus. Those used to always be a separate purchase. Siri and Google Assistant recognize songs, so no need for Shazam, etc. There will be market rationalization in software. Some software companies will merge, some will cease to exist. There won't be as many different apps in the future.

@Jeremy F Windows Defender isn't as good as something like BitDefender or Kaspersky, though. Custom firewalls are also much better than Window's built-in one. I do heavily question why one should need a firewall on a personal device, though - by the time malware is trying to open ports, the damage has been done and it's far too late.

My company does it like this: you pay once for the licence and get updates for free for a year. After that time, you have the opportunity to buy a yearly subscription to keep getting updates. I think it's a very fair pricing model.

@Random Gaming Maybe, why do you think so? More context: The company does only B2B. Their product is an OS for thin clients. Furthermore, they have a management software for remote customization and operation of the OS. In the meantime, they changed their licensing. You get the OS for free, but you have to buy a subscription if you want to manage it via the management software. You can transfer the subscription to another device if you're going to change the hardware. That's even a better solution IMO.

The points raised in this video are all spot on. Love that seamless transition to a sponsor. But the point which didn't get enough time is stream fragmentation. The cup of coffee model is accurate, but the reason its come about especially for films/TV is exclusivity deals. Early days of netflix meant ALL films and TV were in one good value package, now because HBO don't want to pay a subscription service to host their shows they made their own. In making their own, as does Disney etc people will turn to piracy to get everything, this has led to piracy increasing from historic lows.

Bear Arms OS payment is included into hardware, with each new laptop you pay for Windows/OSX again and again. Since computers have tendency to date/break you're into infinite loop of paying for OS, so Microsoft/Apple is fine with that model. Eclipse is open source/community driven, Visual studio is free for community version (because Microsoft wants to hook developers to their platform/technology stack), and subscription-based for professional.

@User 1 While it sadly has become somewhat of a norm especially with AAA publishers doing what you say. For me that's not what DLC acutally means. What I'm refering to is when game devs actually put out NEW & ADDITIONAL downloadable content that they worked on AFTER a release. When you apply THAT concept to other software that would otherwise use a subscription system, I think I'd support it.

Exactly--they can update the app for a predetermined lifecycle, after which point the app is depreciated and a new version of the app is sold. If you have a setup where the old version is still compatible, good for you! If you require new features or compatibility, buy the new version. Honestly it sucks when a patch or update kills a feature that you loved, so sometimes sticking with the older version can be a boon for the niche consumer in this way.

We don't need the daily updates that android apps make us download. I'm fine with buying an app and using it without updates as long as it does what it said it would before i bought it. I'm also fine with buying one that fixes compatibility issues if I decide to upgrade to a newer android OS. What I am not fine with is being forced to download and install updates that I don't want and didnt ask for, then being told i'm being greedy or unreasonable. PS1 and PS2 games didn't have day one updates, or any updates at all. Those were the days.

OS vendors do absolutely everything in their power to avoid breaking existing software. The video massively overstated how much of a problem this is. Imagine you bought a new Android phone, and half the software on the Play store didn't work due to new breaking changes. It'd make you think twice about getting another Android device in the future, right? Google knows this, as does every OS vendor.

@hello world That's only possible if the app already opens a socket. I've yet to see something that opens a socket for the heck of it (the user always allows this in their firewall settings - it's another box users immediately click 'yes' to without any further thought - thus making them useless). Care to explain how an insecure app can be exploited if it doesn't open any ports?

Depends on the app. Some apps only connect to their servers and validate against pinned certs, and unless there is a security issue with that code (and if they use something like Curl, that would require the bug to be in their library which can be patched by the OS) the app is basically immune, so long as it's servers are secure. > You don't need to click some malicious link to get hacked you only need to be connected to the internet and insecure apps can make your device wide open Only if it opens ports, which is rare.

Major change happened 2009 - mining and doing ICOs is now on the table, almost nothing big in crypto is proprietary

Subscriptions aren't as balanced for the consumer compared to paid updates. It gives less choice to users and less ownership of the use of the software. You've put together this video nicely, but I don't see this argument as fully solid, unless you made the last argument first. Adobe's subscription model isn't beneficial to the user. Choice for consumers is good for the company if their product dictates it. Your last point hits it home-give the consumer the choice.

yeah back in the days of CS, if a customer had a complaint (ehm buggy) they could vote with their wallet and not buy the newest version while continueing to use the version they already owned; but with a subscription, Adobe is holding their tools ransom from those who would vote with their wallet.

There are people who update their apps for free, and it is only shovelware features. Why would I pay a small-time dev for that? They're already desperately trying to boost their longevity, why would I encourage them to do that more?

I hate the slide into sponsored content because it either leaves me without an ending, or implies that it was all a big ad. It's unsatisfying as a story. Shame.

Michał Ty yeah I agree. I get he has to make money and if they made it obvious people would just end the video as soon as it ended(though I do that anyway as soon as I see the ad). I prefer it when the ad is at the beginning so you know and biases upfront, though I suppose that would cause some people to just click away.

It wasn't a typo, he's just never seen the word segue spelled before. He is just typing it as he thinks it's spelled.
