One of the best features of the Moog Subharmonicon is its sequencer, providing only 2x4 notes, but with four clock dividers supporting polyrhythmic patterns that don't have obvious repeats. I think it's the most important feature that made me get one, but after playing with it for a while I really start to appreciate the sound too. it's a module that delivers instant fast food at first patch, and haute cuisine when you spend some time with it.
In the first part of the video I get lost while setting things up, so this can happen to you too! I'll try to route the sequencer CV to a quantizer (Ornament & Crime) to check if I can 'escape' the 2x4 notes and built in scales (it works!). And finally I'll hook up the MakeNoise 'Shared Museum' and drive it with the Subharmonicon's resources.

Wonderful sounds. Great experiment and I appreciate your sharing what you were doing. Between you and listening to Richard Devine, it’s been a lovely listening night. Thank you!

Thought-provoking (as usual)- I’ve always tended to aim for as complex as possible with the SubH, but that may be the wrong approach. Next time it comes out (it’s in one of its periodic ‘set-aside to become fresh again’ phases) I’ll try to remember this. Thanks!

I don't think there's a wrong approach :). I also set the module aside for a while and then suddenly new ideas pop in.

Interesting about the Star Trek comment. I’ve been hooked on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and I had a thought that Spock should have some type of Eurorack setup in his quarters for his downtime.

Oh no Robert more to ponder, brain meltdown, not that I have anywhere near modules u have , I wonder if Neutron could be my stand in for Subharmonium as I have this cheaper Synth, not used yet???? Yet another Wow, Zap Kapow tutorial that incite the little Grey Cells, many thanks👍🆒🎶🎶🎶🎶🇬🇧🌈🔱🕸⚡️🌟🌟🌟

Neutron is missing a sequencer, but has MIDI in, so if you hook it up to your DAW (e.g. Ableton Live) you can use MIDI plugins to create all kinds of sequences. As for resources, the Neutron is a very, very powerful synth that can sound both like a Roland and a Moog. Since it's a dual oscilllator machine you can go completely crazy too! Neutron can be a stand in for many, many eurorack modules. If you have one, it's a bit sad not to use it. Behringer also offers a lot of super-affordable modules from the Moog 55, Arp 2500 and Roland System 100 so you don't have to break the bank (or have a KZfaq channel) to make huge sounds. I'd consider getting a neutron (and a black panel) to make my point. Maybe I'll do that. For science. I am pretty sure it can blow a lot of my gear out of the water...

@@CinematicLaboratory I agree with all of that ^^^ A Neutron (w/black panel) is still very much on my long-list. Extremely versatile machine. A DFAM is on the short-list, and a Subharmonicon may end up on that list as well, if you keep this up. Cool stuff, man.

@@CinematicLaboratory thanks Robert yes I think I could Sequence Neutron via Midi with my Digitakt don’t do any DAWs or software alas, I also have UMidi 1u module in my Pallette case that does midi to Steppy sequence from Gates out, 4 outputs x 4 individual sequences so must be work around for Neutron👍👍👍🆒

BTW, I have many modules I used only once to make a video and then 'forgot' about it. Maybe it's honest and transparent to make a video about the gear I don't - or rarely use. A 'keep/must go' video. I am afraid it will be shocking...

I love 'patching' the various clock dividers in and out to break up the rhythms and, as you've done, playing the VCOs. I haven't cracked the secret to patching the sequencers to the sub oscillators directly but, I'm working on it.
@CinematicLaboratory
@CinematicLaboratory 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I tried that too obviously, but the subs are related to the main osc so you basically select a harmonic relationship instead of a pitch. Since the tuning is either 12 tone or 8 tone major you can easily end up with dissonant subs (because they are minor). I think you can get predictable results with the DFAM as the subsequencer, since it's unquantized and you can precisely select which subharmonic to play. I'll definitely hook up M32, DFAM and the Sub in a future video.

Sequencing the subs is possible but you’ll need a precise voltage source. This will add/subtract voltages to/from that sub osc pot setting. I’m using the Usta for this, but it takes a long time to get it right. I’d also like that add: you can finetune the SBH by holding the quantizer button until it starts flashing. I believe you can then use the main vco 1 and 2 knobs to finetune. Also: the quantizer is tuned to the major scale (in 8edo or ji) but you could use it as a minor scale relative to the root note (c major = a minor) if you use another voice as bass.

Regarding sequencer steps comment @6:50: The WMD Metron is set to have 256 step length possible in a single track, plus it offers subdivisions of a step, if this would not be enough. Paired with one or more Volteras (each is 4 CV tracks) you can have all that not only for triggering ;-)
@CinematicLaboratory
@CinematicLaboratory 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing. I have a metron, but without voltera it's just gates and no melodies. As for voltera, I have two and I still haven't figured them out, because my other seqs are much easier to set up.

Definitely and beyond any doubt. But I am going to explore the concept much earlier. There must be somthing in the current MN collection that can do stereo pulse width modulation. I think I already did that with Maths in one of my videos.
