As an artist and modeler I find this system to be the perfect system and the possibilities are endless. I take this system to different levels of complexity and material but it’s pretty much basically the same process. I find adding wads of aluminum foil also creates realistic terrain effects

Hello, I have built two realistic layouts for kids and I love your products. I am very bad at learning how to use products correctly and following directions. I usually need three try’s to get it and do a good job but your products are straight forward and easy! I absolutely love your products and now I’m ready to build my own extensive layout in my basement like I have wanted to do the last 25 years. It’s been on my bucket list since I was a kid and I have hesitated on giving it a shot bc I thought I didn’t have the skills to make a prototypical layout but now after my experience with your products I am ready to jump right in and build it right. Thank you!

This seems pretty useful. decades ago, when I built a small N scale layout as a kid, I used kebob skewers and chopsticks glued together to wireframe a mountain, and an old holy bedsheet cut up as my plaster cloth. Won't lie... This looks really convenient. It's all about price though. As a kid, I used what I had access to.

Hello Joshua. We would suggest watching lots of videos about building model railroads. Check with your local hobby shops to see if there is a model railroad club in your area. Seasoned modelers are the best source of information and support. We believe that using the SubTerrain System is a very easy to build a railroad. We can answer specific questions about building the understructure, terrain and landscape, but track and electrical work, etc...are not our expertise. Hope this helps!

For a Christmas layout you would simply place your Christmas village pieces as desired. You could add snow to your terrain, rooftops, trees, etc. using our Soft Flake Snow (SN140) and attach with our Scenic Cement (S191). Create snow mounds using a mixture of Soft Flake Snow and Flex Paste (C1205) add icicles using our Water Effects (C1212) and much more. Check out some of our videos on creating snow or our Collectible House video for more tips! Happy Modeling!

This is a demo only, not a specific layout. It is similar to our 4’ x 8’ Grand Valley Layout Kit - ST1483, Grand Valley Track Pack- ST1183 and City & Industry Building Set - S1486. The Layout Kit alone, retails at $549.99, saves about 30% over purchasing products individually. It would give you a good start toward the dense forest setting you want. Cost to achieve your layout goal depends how dense and types of trees you use. Shop around for the best price offered at shops and online.

@ModelSceneryExpert
@ModelSceneryExpert 8 жыл бұрын
Our Sub Terrain Layouts are designed using the Atlas Track. I'm sorry, but we are not familiar with power-loc track, so we cannot suggest if this is a valid option with the Sub Terrain Layouts. It is our understanding that other types of track may not have the same variety of track pieces as Atlas. Redesigning a track plan and layout should be attempted by someone who is knowledgeable about the Sub Terrain Lightweight Layout System.

Its very similar to Bachmann EZ-track, the only difference is how the track pieces together (through side joints instead of pegs and rail joiners)

We have not tested or tried EZ-track either. We only use Atlas track on our layouts and cannot speak to how it will work. You would need to completely redesign the track layout. You might try consulting someone at your local hobby shop that is familiar with either track.

@ModelSceneryExpert
@ModelSceneryExpert 7 жыл бұрын
Hello! We like to use a plastic tube (styrene or even a drinking straw) to run the wire through. Holes can be drilled into the foam and base in the Sub Terrain building stage and extend below the base and above the surface. Apply Plaster Cloth around the tubes/straws. When you are ready to run the wiring, the tubes/straws act as a wiring conduit. Happy modeling!

@elizabethrowe5960
@elizabethrowe5960 4 жыл бұрын
Is there any variation in component width available? I'm looking at a T gauge (1:480) layout, but those wide risers are going to take up a tremendous amount of real estate at that scale if I use risers and inclines designed for HO and larger, and I can see that it wouldn't be feasible to cut them longitudinally.
@ModelSceneryExpert
@ModelSceneryExpert 4 жыл бұрын
All of our Risers and Inclines/Declines are the same width. However, for smaller scales you can bevel cut the Riser or Incline/Decline to make a narrower top. Do not cut into the bottom of the Riser, just cut the corners of into a steep angle leaving the desired width on the top of the Riser. You can use our Hot Wire Foam Cutter and Bow and Guide to do this.

@ModelSceneryExpert
@ModelSceneryExpert 9 жыл бұрын
Asher Bar-Yadin Hello! There are many suppliers that sell large pieces of foam. The pink foam you see is insulation foam used when building houses and other structures. You might try a building supply store like Home Depot or Lowes...they should have sheets as large as 4' x 8'. Hope this helps! Remember that this type of foam will out-gas and cause many water feature products to crack, ruining your water feature. It is IMPERATIVE that you cover the foam with Plaster Cloth or other plaster product, sealing ALL holes to keep this from happening. Hope this is helpful to you!

Can you give us a little more information about your project? Is your project intended to be not permanent (completely disassembled)? Will the Risers and Inclines/Declines be permanently affixed to the layout base? Will they be covered in Plaster Cloth for a hard shell?
@Stussmeister
@Stussmeister 3 жыл бұрын
@@ModelSceneryExpert Thank you for getting back to me so quickly :). My project/layout is intended to be semi-permanent, as I want it to stay in one place for a while, but also want to be able to take it apart should I move to another house in the future. I'm thinking that the risers and inclines/declines will be permanently affixed to the layout, as I don't want to worry about tracing a complete track outline more than once. In terms of Plaster Cloth, I plan on using it for some of my planned scenery (I'll likely have mountains/tunnels and three grade crossings), though I've heard covering the risers/inclines with masking tape works well, too. The head of operations at my model railroad club also told me that when it is time for me to move, I can pull up the track and structures, cut through the scenery to get to the sheets of plywood underneath, and disconnect the plywood sheets so I can transport the layout in separate parts. He also said that when I do put the layout back together, I can use Gap Filler to repair the scenery as best I can. Thank you again!!

Have you ever considered using our Mod-U-Rail system? Based on the description of what you want for your layout, we think that Mod-U-Rail would be ideal for you. This system enables modelers to build a layout in modules that can easily be taken apart and moved. The Mod-U-Rail Kit Stands provide the optimum base that is easy to put together and access underneath the layout. The stands bolt together so they are easy to disassemble. The Mod-U-Rail System does not use a plywood layout base, but a foam base. When you move, there would be no plywood to cut through and re-attach together because the modules are built in sections. You could even glue the track down on each module, leaving the track pieces at the end of the module unglued so they are easy to re-attach. Check out our video on Mod-U-Rail and see if it will work for you. woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/video/ModURail As it sounds like you are just starting out with your layout, we recommend consulting our Complete Guide to Model Scenery. This manual is a guide to how to build a layout from start to finish and provides detailed descriptions of our products as well as illustrated instructions on how and when to use products on your layout. woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/item/C1208 Regarding your question about the track: we think you should build all the scenery and simply lay the track without gluing each section down. Tack the track down in strategic areas using Low Temp Foam Glue. The track will stay in place as long as it is not bumped, or the layout shifted. Low Temp Foam Glue can be peeled off of track pretty easily, so if the track needed to be pulled up, it won’t be hard to re-attach.
@Stussmeister
@Stussmeister 3 жыл бұрын
@@ModelSceneryExpert Thank you for letting me know about your Mod-U-Rail system, I'll most certainly have to look into that. Additional thanks for your tips on how best to lay the track. @ModelSceneryExpert

Yes, any track that will be laid should be tested and installed before constructing the tunnels. Before you permanently attach the tunnels, check the clearance with the train. Imagine that you have a town with only track in it, then build the layout around the track.

warhol200 Hello! Our SubTerrain Risers and Inclines are all 2 1/2" wide. To use them for O scale, you will need to place two of them side-by-side. Hope this helps!

I would also like more information on this. I want to know if the track will fit on the risers? Or is it too wide?
@ModelSceneryExpert

Our Risers are 2 ½ inches wide. When using the Lionel FasTrack, you can use two Risers attached side by side to make your risers 5 inches wide.

Could you use other products/brands with the system?
@ModelSceneryExpert
@ModelSceneryExpert 9 жыл бұрын
Notebock MusicDUDE Hello! Yes, you can use whatever products you choose for modeling your terrain and landscape. However, we design all of our products to work together, fully test them for performance, and we cannot offer an opinion as to how well other manufacturers’ products will perform. As far as the SubTerrain Lightweight Layout System itself, the Risers and Inclines/Declines are patented products, so they are not available through any other manufacturer. Hope this helps!

A fantastic video and it is 12 years old. I have found a stockist in Bangkok, so I will be able to order from them. I took a look at their website and they seem to have the basic stuff. I am modelling in OO and I want to use the Grey Blend Ballast, should I use the medium or the fine grade? I have been told to use the fine one. I want to use the risers kits too, but with a 3% rise. Thanks for the interesting Video. Martin. (Thailand)

This is just a quick overview video showing you how easy it is to build a layout. Yes, you can use Bachmann E-Z track. Some of the installation may need to be reconfigured and is only recommended for experienced modelers.

Hey! Could I use blue masking tape too? Would the blue color show through the plaster cloth?
@ModelSceneryExpert
@ModelSceneryExpert 9 жыл бұрын
Megaspartan Bloks Hello Josh! We have not tested blue painter’s tape, so we cannot be 100% sure it will not show through the Plaster Cloth. Chances are it will not be seen, but you may need to add an additional layer or two. If you are applying landscape materials, this will also help hide the blue tape, should it show through. Hope this is helpful!

Do you think this would be suitable for miniature wargaming tables?
@ModelSceneryExpert
@ModelSceneryExpert 9 жыл бұрын
Martin Laird Oh absolutely! Many of our products are used by tabletop gamers to make scenery for their wargaming tables. We do however recommend that if you use our products to make your landscape scenery, i.e. foliage, trees, turfs, etc...you should seal your landscape with a solution made of 4 parts Minwax Polycrylic to 1 part water. Spray this solution on your scenery using a household sprayer. Hope this helps!
