One day, I woke up many times because it was so cold.
My face and head out of the futon felt so cold that it hurt.
When I checked the temperature, it was -13 degrees Celsius!
In an old private house during a severe winter, even the inside of the house is below freezing, and everything freezes.
But it is not only harsh, there is a beautiful and mysterious world that can only be seen here.

We are a family of three who quit a company and migrated to an old private house in the foothills of the Northern Alps.
Nagano, which we visited while traveling in a camper we purchased at the end of our 30s.
The Northern Alps attracted us and we decided to migrate there.
In November 2023, we started our life in the land of our dreams.
I hope you enjoy watching Ayako, her husband Shin, and their daughter Yuri live a leisurely and comfortable life in a place they are not accustomed to.

Maybe you can get a wood burning fireplace installed. They have free-standing ones. And buy sleeping bags that can withstand very cold temperatures like Arctic sleeping bags so you stay warm and not lose sleep due to cold. Plus it would keep Yuri warm, too. It helps to sleep with socks on to prevent loss of heat from the body. I have done this during the winter because our house is poorly insulated.

Back when I was a child, we used to put plastic over the windows after caulking them shut for the season. Not sure if that's allowed in Japan. Another thing to try is what they do in greenhouses - put bubblewrap over the windows. The little air pockets act as insulators. We also used to wrap pipes outside with insulation, and make sure the water for kitchen/bath was dripping water (you can save it in a bucket). Keeping water flowing keeps pipes from freezing. Also look at how much it would cost for underfloor heating for the main house areas. Always hope for cloudy nights in winter, the clouds act as a blanket over the area, trapping a bit of the heat. Clear nights are cold nights!!

I would never suggest caulking a window shut. If there were a fire that could be disastrous. I do think the bubble wrap is the best choice for those big windows! Maybe leave one with an opening as it seems she loves to look outside at nature…

You can add wall hangings or blankets to outside-facing windows, walls, and doors, to help retain heat. Also maybe poke a head into your attic, make sure the eaves don't have gaps that are letting hot air out during the cold weather.(also helps during the hot weather). Another option is to add foam board insulation under your floors in just 1 or 2 rooms of the house, and use that as your main sleeping/living area.

You will for certain loose your body temps, please try to get some heaters and take care of yourselves.

Shampoo froze? -3C indoor? Wow, You guys need to figure out a good heating system. Heating bill is always high in winter but there are ways to save, such as improving your house’s wall, floor, doors windows insulation. Looks like your house is very poorly insulated, the heating emitted from the kerosene heaters or any kind of heaters is just going to escape, that equates to wasting money too. Just my opinion and experience as where I live snows a lot and gets cold.

Нужно утеплять дом и полы в этом помогут ковры паласы их можно вешать на стену, я знаю что нет центрального отопления и это тяжело, я жила в доме была печь которую нужно топить дровами и туалет был на улице в -30*это квест 😂тёплой вам зимы я из Сибири

As others have said, leave your faucets dripping--if your pipes freeze and then break as they thaw, it's a lot of money to fix and can cause a lot of damage to the house. We drip our faucets any time the weather goes below 20F (old, poorly insulated house). Wrap your pipes with insulation, too. But in the end, you will need to get some sort of heating system, because all those measures help but don't absolutely guarantee that your pipes won't freeze.

Musicie pomyślec o ociepleniu domu i ogrzewaniu u nas też bywają mrozy ,ale nie marzniemy . Mam na wsi drewniany domek ogrzewny kominkiem na drewno w ciagu kilku godzin ogrzewmy go do 20 stopni. Bardzo pomogła wymiana okien .Dziękuję za nastrojowy film . Pozdrowienia z Polski

Dear Ayako, in The Netherlands we say "after rain there will be sunshine". In your place just say "after the cold there will be the warmth of spring and summer". Focus on that 😎
