I've played sax for a few months now, therefore some topics are beyond my skill; but I want to tell you that I love your videos anyway. You are a great teacher and (being Italian this a plus for me) your speech is very clear and easy to understand (so I get English lessons included for free... 😜). Thanks for your great work!

Blowing my mind with the subtone altissimo relationship! I’ve always felt like I could do subtone only up so high until I had to change to a regular embochure for higher notes. And I love playing out... Back to the woodshed!

I think you've just made me realise that I'm a lip-out, sub-tone player. I hadn't really thought about my sound in these terms before. This is quite a revelation for me, and explains my choice of mouthpiece and why I swap depending on what kind of music I'm doing. Guess you're never to old to learn something new about yourself eh? 🎷

All of the sudden in the last couple weeks it started popping out as I relaxed my embouchure more. Fascinating. Thanks for all your efforts. I always learn something valuable.

Hey, I got that Super 20 from MRS. They give you a 1 year warranty and when you first get a horn (in my experience) you need to go over it and note anything you need them to fix up. So they replaced a couple of pads and put on some new pieces of cork and stuff for me. Plays great now. I never had a bari before so i just spent the first day learning how to voice all the notes and make them sound good. Using a Berg 105/2 SMS and Legere 2.25 Signatures.

Thank you for the video . Your instructions or suggestions seem to run counter to what is generally and universally offered as to position of the mouthpiece. All of the subtone instructions offered on the Net and articles published state as a matter of established fact that the mouthpiece be positioned so that the very edge of the reed rests upon the mid section of lower lip with the axis of the mouthpiece being some unspecified angle upward from the normal, while you suggest that the mouthpiece be moved forward a little from the usual playing position and the axis of the mouthpiece be inclined some forty five degrees downward. I notice you do not mention the position of lower jaw so assume that this is not of any importance vis a vis subtone production. Your approach is most certainly a breakaway from the normal and most decidedly deserves to be tried out. Thank you very much for the video and the very best to you.
@hammered0184
@hammered0184 3 жыл бұрын
Instructions here have already proven to me that this is the best approach. There are exceptions in the details, like mouthpiece design. Best subtones I have heard come from a lady calling herself Debb Saxx on KZfaq. Check her out, she may be the best saxophonist nobody ever heard of. Best of luck!

@@hammered0184 Thank you for your comments. I do not agree or disagree with the instructions given by super professional saxophonists . I cannot in any way express my own opinion as i have not been able to produce even a hint of subtone. I have merely pointed out the differences in the instructions of very proficient saxophonists and in fact i have produced a short paper on all of the methods suggested or insisted upon by the most advanced players. across the world and if there is one disturbing element made evident by my research is the almost unlimited contradiction in subtone techniques offered by the experts. I was not able to access the saxophonist Debb Saxx. I was however able to locate just one video by one Debb Starr who most certainly must surely be one of the best if not actually the best saxophonist ever. Thank you for your comments and please do offer me your own suggestions or advice or instruction vis a vis producing the subtone as regards your experiences as to mouthpiece type, lay, tip , chamber and reed.Thank you again.

Does this involve moving your jaw forward to achieve that 45 degree angle? Many instructors online suggest moving the jaw back for subtones, so I just wanted to clarify. Moving the jaw back seems to do nothing for me.

hi, any idea why I can't play low notes other that using Subtone and with double cushion. If I try the full sound with my teeth resting on the mouth piece, the notes just break or stay high. Actually I never learned how to play with my teeth resting on the mouth piece, and I hate it. please what am I supposed to do in this case?

Those intros always seem so goofy but then I realise you're way older than you look and actually in your late 30s or something :-) Makes you very likeable. Thanks a lot for the video though. I am trying to get a lot of subtone in the lower register of my alto so I sound more clean and soft and still be able to start the notes fast and quietly. My teacher told me to use more of an overbite and have less of my lip around the reed for subtones as opposed to what you said, so I'm a little bit confused here since your approach has been very helpful to me over the past couple of months. I have been playing without my octave key for like 4 months now and been experimenting with playing everything a semi-tone lower than what I finger while still keeping the notes up in the higher register. I play a Meyer 6 Medium Chamber with strength 4 reads. Do you think I should change anything about that if I want a sound that feels like Bix Beiderbecke, Edmond Hall, Chet Baker, Lester Young, Johnny Hodges, Jimmy Dorsey (I know they're not all saxophonists) ?
@Sirvalorsax
@Sirvalorsax 3 жыл бұрын
A lot of people teach the "small amount of mouthpiece" technique for subtoning but I have always found it limiting. It does work however which is why so many people use it. The 4 strength reeds might be too stiff. I'd move to 3's and really focus on relaxing the embouchure. It may seem like it's too soft at first. If you can, try monitoring yourself with a microphone and headphones. Be sure to turn yourself up too loud so that way you force yourself to use a more relaxed embouchure.
@bro_liv
@bro_liv Жыл бұрын
So what about when practising subtones and having thoses multi-notes at once like you had on the G? Having some difficulty to get clean sound unless I come down from low E let's say. Is it that my reed is too soft?
@Sirvalorsax
@Sirvalorsax Жыл бұрын
The saxophone's tone can become unstable with any type of extreme embouchure. I've had this issue on soprano when I relax too much. If the embouchure is too loose, the lower notes can also split. Try to find those points where the sound is right on the verge of splitting and play in the middle.
@jd6268
@jd6268 6 ай бұрын
I get that split sound on the high G when i'm playing normally sometimes... thought it was maybe a fault in the sax. I can correct it by tightening the embouchoure but seems like it's just that note 🤔@@Sirvalorsax
