Good review, I'm still looking for a really good city building game, so I like that you offered some alternatives at the end of the video.

Haven't played this in awhile. Dunno that i'd see myself Dis-liking it any less now than i have before but i haven't played many city builders after it to compare. That said, i still think it's worth checking out. From what i've seen, The Collector's Edition makes a much prettier game, but forces you to buy all the expansions in one go whether you want them or not. The 5 star expansion makes things only slightly less soulless. That all said, the one thing i don't like about suburbia is how terrible the interface is when it comes to "interactive" tiles. The S:CE doesn't look to improve on this either, unless you backed the Kickstarter. Basically if you (the one reading this comment, not the channel host) are going to check this game out, you'll want to get some kind of reminder marker for buildings that give you future gains/penalties, and you'll want something to mark the different interactive building types (Offices, restaurants, airports, ect.) so everyone can see what's been built without having to scan every tile in every borough twice just in case you missed something (which you easily can). Also there are no official rules that i've found as to how to integrate the expansions; avoid just randomly bashing all the tiles together. Instead, play the base game first and slowly add/remove tiles you like/dislike.

🙂 Robocop’s Codpiece would be a good name for a band. Good review - this was high on my list to buy, and I still half fancy it, but will have to take a closer before deciding. Cheers for maybe saving me a bit cash.

Apparently the anniversary edition solves the aesthetic issues. Only con is that it’s over £100… Never really understood anniversary editions. They’re too expensive so the casual gamer and fans already own them. Bizarre world out there.
@kidmarine39943 жыл бұрын
I keep looking at that anniversary edition but it’s way too pricey. You’d really have to love the game to want to pay that much to upgrade your copy - crazy money
@biznesstime833 жыл бұрын
Have you looked at the anniversary edition that came out recently? It may help with your critiques on the aesthetics. I enjoy the game overall. My strongest issue with it is the fiddliness of the upkeep and scoring. It’s like being in maths class when playing a tile and calculating how many points it will get for the interactions with the tiles in other peoples neighborhoods. Also the expansions feel like more bloat than fun, but I can always choose to leave them out. (They are packaged in the collectors edition)

Anniversary edition is ridiculously expensive. Massive pass.

The city building genre is still a style of game I am struggling to find the love for. Someone, some day will crack it and come up with an epic city builder but, in my opinion, it just hasn't happened yet that I am aware of.

Thanks for posting. I like city-building but never felt attracted to Suburbia. Drab presentation and semi-abstract theme. I like Metropolis and Big City (big toy fest, total opposite in presentation) and keep trying to make Urban Sprawl work, as it feels there is a totally awesome game in there...somewhere. Locally we also play Urbanity, one of my amateur designs...and yes it is full of toys.

You have pnp files for your game? I’d like to take a look at it, Peter. Don’t be shy…

And expose myself as one who constantly disparages published games but can’t assemble a noughts-and-crosses variant? Seriously, Urbanity rules are part documented, part manuscript and part in the head, only practical when the designer is present at all playing. I will summarise: The game is greatly derived from Big City, to the extent that if ever published, the term ‘rip-off’ would be used; Card stock buildings of several shapes feature, as do second storeys; The game features bus stops and competing bus routes; We like it (or my group is too tactful to say otherwise).

Wonderful video! I purchased Suburbia along time ago but alas its still in its plastic wrap. I meant to play it but when I actually watched a video about how to play it struck me as being ugly and boring. Like city planning the board game.
@BoardGameBollocks3 жыл бұрын
It has good and bad bits like most games but the bad bits outweigh the good bits. I’ve no idea why Mr Alspach decided to create such an ugly soulless game.
@alfredong34943 жыл бұрын
Totally agreed that the base game looks really bad but the collector's edition change all of that and it looks really nice. Those who are really interested in the game should go get the collector's edition of the game, it comes with all the expansion and I feel that it really is worth the price
@BoardGameBollocks3 жыл бұрын
The irony is that people who buy collectors probably already own the game and those that don’t won’t pay the premium price…it’s a paradox

I always liked this game but thought it was too bloody expensive for what's in the box, and the collector's edition just takes the cake when it comes to overpricing a game. I'm not normally stingy like this but these boxes are one quarter filled with ugly hexagons.
