The fact that the Subway plotline itself is about the franchise forcing out small businesses and having extremely shady marketing tactics is... well, I'm not quite sure why Subway signed on to it. It doesn't exactly paint them in a good light and says absolutely nothing about their products from what I can remember. It's like if Nestle paid to be featured in a storyline where their company steals all the local water and sells it back to everyone while the characters working for them cackle maniacally over dangerously dehydrated children

I worked at a subway for a year. The owner of the shop was an amazing person. Gave small deals here and there that the company wouldn’t necessarily offer (think extra stuff on certain sandwiches he thought were bad deals). He also made sure every single employee had a job before we closed(I’ll get to that). I remember when the inspector would come down she’d proudly claim that we were the best subway in socal and she loved checking in on us. During the $5 footling I asked the owner “how do you afford to sell sandwiches at that price?” To which he responded “I’m wondering the same thing.” Poor dude had to close the whole shop a few months later and could barely afford to do so. I still have the order here sign as a memory of my first job

See, and that‘s why I don‘t have any sympathy for these people. Why did he not read the contract he signed? Why did he not use his brain? 90% of people who get fucked in this show‘s topics are dumb people, usually minorities. Sure, Subway & Co. are evil (it‘s the USA, after all), but if you have a functioning brain you can avoid most capitalistic traps. I just remembered the episode about Trump university and how people got scammed. Like…yeah??! It‘s fucking Trump, his whole stick is scamming people. Why should I feel bad for those single digit IQ retards?

Extra fun fact: that drama with the scene about the friend in a coma in the subway, the show is actually about a South Korean woman getting swept up in a tornado and dropped into North Korea. Eventually, the army men who find her become friends, the caption in love, and when she flees, they do too, and the men in that subway are also technically North Korean defectors learning that their captain woke up from a coma. Yep - saving Chuck and Community earned Subway a permanent place in my heart, along with their going along with that superficially anti-corporate plot on Community. Also the fact that, for many years in many places around the world, they were the only restaurant with a vegetarian option that was more than just fries (which themselves weren't even vegetarian at some chains). A loved one even talked about opening a franchise someday. Fortunately, she chose a safer life option - moving to Ukraine.

However, you're subject to so many rules and regulations, that they may change at any time, that the "be your own boss" thing is indeed totally bullshit. From my nearest mall to home there are 10 shops on the main roads. They regularly spring up within 200 meters of each other. The tuna thing was hilarious. The whole thing was that a DNA test was done on the tuna and didn't have tuna DNA. Nevermind the fact that it was pre-cooked tuna and the heat destroys the DNA. Once that point was made, the ones filing the lawsuit switched their argument to that the tuna wasn't sustainably sourced as claimed. At that point, it just proved they filed in hopes that Subway would settle and they could make a quick buck.

This is a little irrelevant, but one of my first jobs was at a Subway at age 16. My first day on the job, the coworker training me stole money from the register during close that night and tried to blame me the next day I came to work. He got fired shortly after, and I didn't realize I'd pick up all of his 12-hour shifts where my manager would " go to the bank" during lunch shifts and dinner shifts. They did a good job exploiting young workers who had never had a job before. They told me when I first applied that it would be great experience, and it really gave me the experience to 1) know my worth 2) quit that job as fast as humanly possible.

However, it's all intertwined. To many world wide this is a livelihood. To just say I'm not going to eat there anymore is not really the answer. there are people stuck in the middle who are hurting and I imagine it isn't limited to Subway. It's a big problem that DOES stem from the Capitalistic idea of owning your own business, being your own boss, and that kind of mythological independence we're taught is so easy to attain.

A shoutout to that would have been icing on the cake. I definitely witch-cackled my way through that ending clip too.

Okay, okay. I get the whole, "not going to Subway isn't the answer because small business owners, whatever" but as a a former subway employee, FUCK that. Nobody is treated or paid worse than the sandwich artists, and I've never worked anywhere with worse health and safety oversight. The little sanitizer buckets the knives went into would sometimes sit out all day with warm mayo on them. I was making $8.50 as the highest paid non supervisor on staff, and my boss, who worked her ass off and lived in poverty, made $11.00 an hour. He's right that the Subway model makes less money than other fast food, and that impacts the ways employees are compensated and treated. Furthermore, the low cost of opening a store attracts people who have never worked in the restaurant business and have no friggin clue what they're doing. My owner didn't clean the grease trap for 5 years and when he finally got a fine, he had his family member clean it out with a ladle while the store was open!!! Larger fast food franchises pay a company to do this fml

Had a family friend who was a Subway franchisee. They decided to try to have their "own" business instead of buying a house. It was when the 5 dollar footlong was big and Subway was relatively popular. Long story short, it was smooth sailing for a couple years and then they opened up 3 more locations within a few miles, sales dropped, $5 footlong went away, and corporate forced them to shut their doors. They lost everything, declared bankruptcy. That was over 5 years ago, they have yet to recover. Fuck Subway.

This is what separates the big players from the small ones, with highly leveraged loans and shell companies large players don’t lose much of their own cash when something fails, and any one bankruptcy does not directly affect others because of how the companies they own are isolated from each other. The small player, if they can even get a loan, is put up with their own collateral and in the event of corporate bankruptcy it can wipe them out personally.

Watch this show and will never want a Subway franchise. Funny but very informative. Very much a scam for franchisee. The only one where I live, recently closed down. It was in the smaller part of a two part commercial property, in a great location, but I don't know why have not been able to rent it all now. The bigger one has been empty for over a decade ago. It used to be a drugstore. I don't remember which one. it's a mystery property right smack in the middle of the town, also on the main strip road and highway. Meanwhile just about everything else commercial property is gone, sold, rented, and being built on. I think that the problem must be the lack of parking space. They're going to have to tear it down, and build something else much smaller, that leaves more parking lot.

But they took the next cheapest trick and bought a sub from each Subway within a mile of the studio. - - On restaurant density: I live in a small town in NW Massachusetts. There is a Subway in my town, and there were two, now one, in the next town (one in the center of town, one that closed that was in the WalMart). This is on top of a McD's, a Wendy's a Taco Bell (no KFC menu there, dang it!), A Dominos, two Chinese restaurants, a Chinese/Japanese restaurant, an overpriced fine dining place, a seafood place, 3 single-owner pizza/sub shops, the deli counter at the Hannaford's grocery store, and around a half-dozen prepared food counters at the Market Basket mega-grocery store. There may be a couple I missed.

I remember in the 90s there were no Subways, and then suddenly there were three fairly close. Back then, they'd be open much later than everywhere else, until midnight on weekdays and 2 AM on weekends. As a teen who'd get off work after 11 PM, this was one of the few places you could eat. I actually remember liking the sandwiches then, especially compared to the McDonald's alternative. They only had two kinds of bread, so it was usually freshly baked. Subway was one of the closest places to eat near the high school too, so it was always packed at lunch. I didn't eat Subway for a while, came back and they had like 7 kinds of bread. Every single time I got a sandwich in the future (usually while traveling on a road trip and needing non-McDonald's/Burger King etc food), the sandwiches were horrible because the bread was almost always stale. I haven't eaten at a Subway in years now, usually picking Jimmy John's when road tripping for some "fast" food. The K-Pop at the end was a thing of beauty and perfectly done to the point that it looked legit until the tuna thing. :)
