Are you thinking you need some more "oomph" when you're mixing?
The low end just isn't cutting it, and whenever you take your mixes to a bigger system you think:
"Damn, I wish I could hear that bass in my studio.."
So you've been eyeing the different subwoofers on the market. But holy smokes, those things get expensive.
Maybe a cheap one will do the trick too..?
Some of the more budget friendly brands offer more price conscious products after all...
But are they any good? Which size should you get?
And will they play nice with your speakers?
In this first part of a two-parter on subwoofers I want to show you what it comes down to when picking a subwoofer so you can be sure you're getting it right from the start.

- HEDD Audio & Acoustics Insider - What is it about? -
Welcome to this video series in collaboration with HEDD Audio! In this series I'm going deep into different aspects of studio speakers and subwoofers to show you how they work, how to use them in your home studio, and the pros and cons of different types of speaker designs. I'll be using acoustic measurements with Room EQ Wizard (REW) and Rational Acoustics SMAART, and I'll talk to experts, specialist and speaker designers. To do that I am partnering with HEDD Audio, which gives me the opportunity to go into a depth and breadth that I wouldn't be able to do on my own. I use HEDD Type20 MK2 speakers every day myself in my own studio and I couldn't be happier with how they perform. Otherwise I wouldn't have agreed to this partnership. I'm very excited to go on this deep dive with you and to show you how you can get the most out of your room and speakers.

I ended up getting nearly the biggest KRK sub because it was the only one I could pay over over time, ended up with a pair of Rokit 8 G4s and the KRK S12, luckily my living room where I have my set up is a good size, and I already put up acoustic panels. Will get them this weekend, likely will grab some extra panelling incase I get to much reverb.

Direct port modulation subs will match any mains. Also, my Gallo sub blends with HEDD TYPE 05 (1st gen) on my desktop. None of my speakers use any DSP as that degrades the sound.

Hey. You said the bigger the subwoofer the better. I would like you to support that with more arguments. A bigger subwoofer would translate lower frequency than a medium/small subwoofer, but if my room is too small the waves don t have enough space to fully expand. So I think the limitation for your subwoofer size is your room size. I would really like to hear your opinion on going for a dual subwoofer system than a mono subwoofer system. and the difference (if there is one) between a big surface sub speaker cone vs two smaller surface sub speaker cones; if the surface of the bigger is the same as the added surface of the two smaller ones, is there a difference in translating the sound? You could pair up this response with maybe referencing the subwoofer style on the HEDD tower mains. Thank you very much!

My subwoofer has passive outputs with a fixed crossover at 100hz. Unfortunately my satellite speakers are toast, and the parts arenet available to replace them. My studio monitors are active. Is it possible to use the low pass and high pass on my sound card (rme) to act as a crossover? High pass my active studio monitors at 100hz for example?

This would be possible if you can connect the main speakers and the subwoofer to two different outputs so that the low pass filter will only affect the sub, but that is going to present a number of potential problems. First off, how will you control to the overall SPL of the entire system and maintain the relative level between mains and sub since you are now using 2 stereo outputs instead of 1. Second, just applying a LPF to the sub that is at the same frequency as the HPF of the mains is not enough to ensure that the mains and sub will be aligned in terms of time, phase and level. In fact, I can confidently say that it is 99% likely that they WILL NOT be aligned, and therefore you need additional tools to align them. There are many processing options for performing such alignment on mismatched speakers but if you want an all-in-one solution so that you can come out of your DAW computer system with a single stereo output, then I would recommend the DriveRack PA2 by dBx for about $550 or the DCX2496 by Behringer for a little over $300. This will provide you with a crossover with numerous independently selectable and adjustable HPFs and LPFs, delays above and below the crossover point for time alignment, as well as graphic & parametric EQs, compressors, limiters, etc. While these units are designed for live sound systems, the principals are all the same whether it is a live PA or a studio monitor system. I have used these types of units on the smallest of studio systems to relatively large hanging array type PA systems, and everywhere in between, with great success. To put the icing on the cake, after doing main/sub alignment, I would use Sonarworks SoundID Reference running on your computer to get the EQ dialed in much more precisely than you could do manually with the DriveRack. All that being said, to perform the alignment with tools such as a DriveRack or equivalent processing, you will need a calibrated measurement microphone and analysis software such as Room EQ Wizard or Rational Acoustics SMAART like Jesco is using in this video. If you want more info on these methods then I suggest you check out Nathan Lively's KZfaq channel Sound Design Live. kzfaq.info

A question. Isn't it important to match monitors and subs max spl? If there is a big difference in max spl they will, how to put it, "scale" differently when you change volume on you interface. Right? One would have to adjust volumes on the units every time volume changes on the interface. Am i making any sense? :)
@tuckerburnes
@tuckerburnes 2 жыл бұрын
You don't need to, nor will it be practical, to match the maximum SPL between the mains and sub. What you will want to make sure of, as Jesco alluded to, is that your subwoofer is not under powered compared to your main speakers or the maximum SPL of the entire system will be limited by the subwoofer. The opposite would be true if the mains are under powered compared to the sub. But once you set a workable relative level between the mains and sub, as long as the entire system is being fed by a single volume control, the relative level will be maintained. Does that answer your question?

Nice vids...and you have many gems in your vids but have to strongly disagree on many things here...if thats ok (and with great respect) 1. in a studio application, DONT rely on the crossovers of the manufacturer. In the DAW or room correction, its a simple case to use a LW crossover (inside the DAW control room/outputs) that you can tune to the massive amounts of variables in the room eg room size/phasing/spl and so on. In other words the manufacturer match is not that important...sorry. 2. SW size is relative to room size since its main job is to create sound pressure (and I personally find the sealed/unsprung mass response of 10" is by far the best for smaller room) 3. The old adage Isolate/Elevate/Attenuate is the basis application for subs 4. Measurement/Listening is the only way to get reasonable compromise for sure; BUT even a couple of db is going to change all that, which takes it back to consistent calibration of spl (and intended target level) before even starting. I use 81db which is still a touch loud for me but at least you are working from a constant.' 5. As soon as you move the speakers = distance = time = phase and the sub will always be located as distance n. The initial test is good on paper...only. 6. Keep away from corners where you are exciting the modes of the room...the modes will be exacerbated. So what do I do in a small room? Currently working on infinite baffle, non resonant baffle plate, mounted flat in ceiling, dead centre of room...Ive asked a lot of gurus out there without any answers as yet but the theory is starting well hehe

Interesting technology and probably a fun experience for the listener/user similar to that provided by Buttkicker technology, but things like that will never replace subwoofer speakers for the professional audio engineer because bone conduction will never be the same as the interaction of a room, its acoustics, the medium of air in the room, a speaker system and the human ear.
@audiunt
@audiunt 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t understand how the phase alignment between speakers and sub would work. Isn’t the phase difference not also depending on the difference in distance between the sub/speaker and your ear? It’s not just the filter phase introduced? Or should placement of the sub take care that there is equal distance between all drivers and your ears?

These are good questions and you are on the right track. This is a complex topic. Let me see if I can provide some insight that is helpful. Any two speakers of any type are going to have different characteristics that create their individual "sonic signature" which when compared will be mismatched/misaligned in terms of frequency, time and phase, 99% of the time. Even with main speakers and subwoofers by the same manufacturer you can have misalignment right out of the box. The HEDD main and sub speaker combination in this video would be an exception to that rule and demonstrates how far HEDD has gone in their design process to achieve the remarkable result demonstrated by Jesco. To address your specific questions: Yes, a distance offset of the baffles of two speaker cabinets will cause a time/phase misalignment that is IN ADDITION to whatever "signature" the speakers exhibits when heard or measured individually. Placement, at best, can only preserve the differences in the "signature" of the two speakers that already exists. In other words, if the baffles of the two speakers are physically aligned, like Jesco has done in this video by setting the speakers side by side with the baffles on the same plane, then THEORETICALLY when listening or measuring you will experience the interaction of the difference of those two signatures ONLY. But once you move the speakers apart and break that plane, you will introduce additional misalignment. The reason Jesco is using the method of measurement shown in the video where the speakers are on the floor with the baffles aligned on the same plane and the omnidirectional, calibrated measurement mic on the floor in a position that is equidistant between the low frequency drivers of the main speaker and the subwoofer, is so that he can get a measurement of each speaker individually where the sound from each speaker is arriving at the mic at the same time, say 7.63 milliseconds (just a random number I made up), and to remove to the greatest extent possible the affects of the acoustics of the room on the measurements. What you are going for here is as close to an anechoic chamber as possible, at least with regard to the low frequencies meaning below approximately 300 Hz. Once you have separate measurements for the main speaker and the subwoofer in a software program such as Room EQ Wizard or Rational Acoustics SMAART, you can see clear as day the differences in the magnatude of the frequency response and the degree and manner of misalignment of the phase/time between the speakers. Only then do you have enough info to know WHAT needs to be addressed to align the two speakers with each other and to be able to determine HOW to correct the alignment, meaning what tools, such as delay, filters, EQ, etc.

Woofer and cabinet sizes are not the only factors that determine the LF extension or max SPL. Many other factors involved. Buying based on woofer size is a very bad idea. There are tiny 10" subs that'll go much lower than a large 15" sub. Even drivers from the same series will not necessarily go lower with the larger models.

If you're looking at 2-way speakers (+ sub), in general you should stick to 6" or 5" midwoofers since it's difficult to match tweeter directivity with 8" or larger midwoofers. If you mean woofer as in 3 or 4-way speakers then yes bigger is better (or multiple smaller woofers). More displacement, more SPL, less excursion needed, less distortion. Better to have headroom and use EQ than hit the limits of your system. But even with a 3-way system I would personally use subs too since you can use optimal placement for bass.
@tuckerburnes
@tuckerburnes 2 жыл бұрын
@@eetu2532 You're right, but you also have to consider that in a system like this the woofers of the 2-way speakers are the "bridge" between the tweeter and the subwoofer. Going with a smaller woofer on the 2-way speaker does what you stated and makes those woofers more mid-range "friendly", but simultaneously sacrifice low frequency extension of those woofers which can lead to a crossover or LPF frequency that is higher than is ideal for the subwoofer. My personal preference, and from what I have seen used by the majority of experienced engineers over the course of my 24 years of professional experience , when working with 2-way speakers, is an 8 inch woofer. 3-way main speakers with a sub making it 4-way system, is definitely the way to go if you can afford it and have the space to set it up properly.
