In this video, I outline a great planting method that extends cropping and also increases the productivity of your vegetable garden. Succession sowing and succession planting is a wonderful vegetable gardening technique that should be used wherever possible, and there are a few different types of succession planting which I cover in this video.

Hello, do you have a video about how to store veggies? Like potatoes, I can't keep them. They wether start rotting, or go sprouting. I thank you for your video's! I only have a balcony, but can grow a lot in tubs and buckets, and am learning a lot from you. I wish you a beautiful day!

Your vegetables always look super healthy. As a begginer I'm getting a bit thrown over by pests. So, que question is; how do you keep pests (all kinds) away on your vegetable garden? Thanks!

I do succession planting all year. In early spring I plant things like Lettuce, Spinach, and Radishes a couple weeks apart so that when one starts bolting, the others are in their prime. All summer long as soon as a crop is finished, it is removed and another crop planted. For example, I get two crops of bush beans each year - as soon as the first ones are done producing, they are cut off a soil level and another crop of seeds is planted.
@HuwRichards

Oh I wish we had the season to get two crops of Bush beans! I love that you cut off from the base and put a new seed in, so easy yet so brilliant!

Sweet corn. Plant small blocks two weeks apart otherwise it all matures at once and then you've got more than you can eat.

Thanks for this video Huw. Very interested in micro-succession planting. In a few weeks I'll start to harvest the first potatoes for our family of 3. I'll pull up enough potatoes for 1 meal but I'm thinking of planting Kale from seed immediately in the same place. The next potatoes meal after that I'll plant red cabbage. 3rd potato meal I'll pop in what I hope will be a Baked Potatoe. Don't know what this is called but basically, as I harvest one thing I'll immediately Succession- & Inter- Crop mostly from other plant families.

I guess a slight caveat to kale (or other leafy produce) is to sow a second batch as an insurance policy. I planted out my lovely healthy kale sown in plugs about a week ago, and yesterday there was some severe slug damage! I've immediately sown some more kale just in case the first lot can't fight them off 😊

We have a very long growing season so I am trying to design a way to not only prevent a glut but to avoid the loss of so much produce due to pests. I notice when my plants are young they are robust and pests don't bother with them but as they age on they attract more pests.

Hi Huw, I'm new gardener, heard so often first early second early and main crop. Question, what variety of potatoes are they?
@HuwRichards
@HuwRichards 4 жыл бұрын
First early, second early and main crops are simply names of a group of particular potatoes varieties according to their characteristics. First early potatoes tend to mature faster and are smaller, whereas maincrop are grown for bigger spuds and larger quantities.
@sarahbehler5437
@sarahbehler5437 4 жыл бұрын
But how do you know which potatoes are which ? The seed ones I have seen in stores here often don’t say. If it is any help, @hereforpeace, my mom often just cuts up store bought potatoes , when they are sprouting, and pops them in the ground at any time, lol? Sometimes they grow, sometimes they don’t, it is experimentation &always an adventure! Best of luck! Have fun with it!

I tried to sow two types of radish in Hungary. One type in April and another one in May. We had cool weather until the end of May with 13-16 °C daily maximum temperature. I watered the plants regularly. However none of the varieties have started bulbing. What have I done wrong?

This is very strange, perhaps the radish are too close together? Wait and see what happens in the next couple of weeks.

Radish don't like fertilizers. Too much nitrogen will give you just green leaves and no bulbs. Use compost thats' atleast 2 yrs old if possible. God bless.
