I've been a nanny to the uber-weathly for 25 years and I can tell you that you will NEVER see a logo or brand on these people. LV/Gucci/Goyard bags are for the housekeepers.

Goyard used to be part of the quiet luxury back then because their handbags looked so basic (and cheap) you couldn't tell it was actually expensive. Now it's part of mainstream, I barely see the elite use it except the suitcases.

@@hellobecky84 Right!? It's lost its' exclusivity now. And I know not all the bags we see are the original ones (especially the ones I see carried on the subway) but unlike the the obviously fake LV bags, even the Goyard bags without the logo are now been counterfeited because everyone knows it's supposed to be an elite brand.

No I think he was doing that more as a caricature rather than feeling the actual need to impress. To him, it’s more like a costume than an outfit. Most of the times he’s dressed very quiet, so I don’t think dressing up that way is his way of impressing people. He’s been around old money long enough to know better.

Succession’s costume designer deserves an Emmy for every season. As someone who has worked in that type of luxury fashion for years (and my mother before that as I was growing up), I can really notice all of the nuances and it’s delightful. Just want to add, magazines might have popularized it recently but “quiet luxury” is not a trend. It’s been a historical way for old money to distinguish itself from the mercantile class for centuries.

Logan’s sweater has more history than just being a part of the old money aesthetic. They hail from the Irish coast, knit for fishermen. I feel like it was partially a nod to his heritage partially. They were also super popular in New England in the 80’s and 90’s, very WASP-y which is why they show up in the new money aesthetic.

As an academic I've been in contact with some super rich people that dress in this "quiet luxury" type of fashion. Usually they're just trying to fit in the intelectual aesthetic sporting tweed blazers (think about the Price family in the show). However I had this one professor... Man his style came off as mockery to us. He was not Just uber rich, he had old money, like, european royal family type of old money. Yet, he would do his lectures in grease stained jeans and ragged shirts, like the university he was enrolled in wasn't good enough for his time (something he would point out, actually). It was like his own inside joke with himself: "look at my shirt full of holes and arm pit stains, I'm like one of you, peasants". Anyway, thank you for coming to this Ted talk and remember you can dress expensive, casual and not come off slime and gross!

Yes! During my PhD I met this guy who used to wear old T-shirts with literally holes in them. At the beginning I thought he was a weirdo in a good non pretentious way, or that he was overdoing the "I don't care about clothes" attitude of the scientific community. Then he said he used to not bring anything with him when he travelled, but a bunch of money in his pockets. That was weird. And, finally, we found out he was the son of super wealthy parents. Since then, I don't necessarily consider T-shirts with holes non-pretentious 😆

I own a couple of „stealth wealth“ pieces and they are the best pieces i have. Extremely comfortable (except for the cleaning part. They always want their own special spa treatment service in the washing machine lol) I can recommend buying them, but choose timeless pieces, because that way you can wear them for years or even decades. There’s no point in buying high-quality material if you are only wearing it for 1 year and then it’s out of fashion again only for it to collect dust in your drawers.

I think a lot of people don’t realize how much of a different mindset wealthy people have compared to average people. Usually they don’t care at all what other people think about them (fashion choices included). They don’t spare the mental bandwidth for prestige and image; they’re too busy building wealth. They will outsource those decisions or don’t bother. Comfort will triumph over image because this class can’t be annoyed or distracted by discomfort.
@LifeAsCC

I think a lot of this is like, "quiet Luxury" is literally just wearing clothes you afford. If your owning $15Billion of housing for a year... $55-900 is just not even on the radar. it doesn't make much of a dent in the ultrarich accounts. There are stores that are affordable for them. $1200 is closer to $12 or $45 for us. True a quiet luxury state has arisen to remove the loud luxury that is just embarrassing to the classical individuals with the same amount of wealth.

"Quiet luxury that the elite so carefully cultivate" Anyway, I went to school with insanely wealthy people. They were never flashy but always looked better than anyone I had ever seen. Back then they usually threw in something grubby like dirty sneakers that didn't do a thing to disguise how expensive they looked overall. I still think a lot Shiv's outfits look like she got them at Walmart. So far her season 4 choices are especially boxy and saggy. I prefer Roman's style overall. Her gowns and formal ware are excellent, though. I saw someone call the Roys old money as opposed to Tom (and I think Bridget) being nouveau riche. But they aren't. The emulate old money only because they were exposed to it. Logan made all their wealth in his lifetime. Perhaps their mother had some influence, but I think Logan was careful to have his children learn the ways of old money - even though he despises those people as much as he does everyone else.

Clearly, I'm a work in progress, but thanks for the correction. Interesting experience you had being surrounded by wealthy individuals trying their best to hide their money. Your comment about them wearing dirty sneakers reminds of those extremely torn shoes that Balenciaga made that was valued at about $1,850. Personally, I enjoyed most of Shiv's looks thus far. Though I can agree with you that the Roys aren't old money. The real rich media family definitely has to be the Pierce's as seen with how the power dynamic is illustrated between their family and the Roys.

@@RizztrainingOrder I don't believe fit exemplifies worth. Anything can fit any way at any price. Clearly, Shiv isn't wearing Walmart clothes. @@malcatt Those Balenciaga shoes. So crass, gross, and mean. Maybe they were trying to pull off the "so rich I don’t care" aesthetic, but all it did was mock poverty. Haven’t had a chance to peek into the show Succession yet but from the looks of it reminds me of my hometown. It’s a very affluent little enclave in the Silicon Valley where most are so low key. Growing up this was the norm, simple but the finest yet focused on fit and form that feels a little utilitarian yet with subtle details of elegance. My staples vary from a few Armani, Kawakubo, Brooks Bros, Banana Republic, James Perse, Yamamoto, Filippa K, lots of Helmut Lang and a slew of cowboy boots!

What makes these stealth wealth clothes so expensive if not for the obvious flashiness? Are they ethically sourced? Are they particularly durable or comfortable? Are they easy to clean?
@FlutterMouse
@FlutterMouse Жыл бұрын
The materials used and the skill. A lot of those goods are made by tradesmen and women not factory employees. Like I can tell Logan wears a lot of Aran sweaters. Those are like standard uniform of Old money Americans. They aren't "expensive" but they are hand made and only come from the Aran Islands. It's a) an indicator you value quality b) you're knowledgeable about things outside of where you live. Stealth wealth isn't necessarily about things being expensive per se but choosing items based on their functions and longevity. These clothes are high quality but very conservative. You can literally inspect the weave on these items and feel the difference. The seams are very tight and are less prone to tearing. These are the clothes that years from now end up in consignment whereas fast fashion often ends up in the trash because they're made of thin materials. There was a time when ALL clothing was made with quality but when sweatshops became the norm, this took jobs away from tailors and seamstresses and those jobs became "luxury" if you live in other countries where seamstresses are still a common profession for women, you can still have a wardrobe made from scratch and it won't cost you a lot. Most Americans buy off the rack=poor. That's not true in Ghana or Nigeria where hand made is the tradition.

@A T for the women's hats . Usually they last a long time. I don't know as much about the men's clothes. I have a woven beach hat I bought over 10 years ago that's still in good shape. It's was 40 plus dollars. My mother keeps insisting I replace it but the cap she bought to replace it was incredibly cheap and looked like it. Stealth wealth doesn't mean just clothes. It means you live a very obscure lifestyle that doesn't overtly indicate you have money but upon further inspection you do. I think stealth wealth in the context is definitely a marketing term to get poorer people to engage in more conspicuous consumption that in return will actually drive down the prestige of those goods. Brand recognition is supposed to be a BAD thing . So it's usually not going to necessarily be "designer" just good tailoring. The more people try the ape the wealthy, the more the wealthy will stop buying those. goods. Everyone knows Gucci and Chanel. Only some know Dubarry or Karen Millen. This even goes down to things like food. Wealthy people are not going out to eat at 5 star restaurants every day. That's not realistic. But their refrigerators at home are comparatively empty. That's because unlike regular people who often stress out over wasting food or taking advantage of a good deal. Rich people buy exactly what they will actually need to eat. I used to visit a lot of my rich friends houses. Their refrigerators weren't full of expired salad dressings and old cracker boxes. Who needs to hoard food when prices don't effect you like that?

cool video. even if I were wealthy af, I think I’d still be buying clothing for less than $200. I can’t stand the culture of the uber wealthy, it almost disgusts me, stealth wealth is even more awful than flashy wealth

@@sharontalbot8037I've never met or known anyone as wealthy as the Roy's. I've known some rather wealthy people though. They oftentimes dress in unassuming but very finely made pieces. They don't wear things once and throw them away. One of them, a 40 sth old man that gained weight in the recent years, kept his old suits and handed them to his eldest son. The suits were obviously in great shape, that's the luxury of paying for top quality and caring greatly of your clothes. Not all rich people are showy, and not all of them are wasteful with everything. (That same man I mentioned earlier would spend money as if nothing in restaurants, casinos and the likes. It's just that finely made clothing items that looked good were not something disposable for him)

Sounded like someone that isn't rich. The way you see things now will be very different when you become a millionaire. You can't make a certain amount of money without it affecting your mindset in very little and seemingly unobvious ways

considered talking about Roman up until I read up on what Michelle Matland (the costume designer) had to say about his style in an interview with Vogue Australia. She said in the article "I think that only Roman probably maintains his exactness, because I think of all of them he’s not concerned, really, with how he looks in that way. He understands himself in that facet. In many others, he does not and he’s confused on so many levels, but I think [he’s just going] about his business".

The richest person I know is wearing shoes with scratches and tore up tips. A multimillionaire who has nothing to prove. Just his favorite shoes. Has nice clothes but isn’t a “flashy, look at me” and will wear the same things over and over again. Matter of fact, all his cars are certified used Lexus’. And not the fanciest model either. His house is outrageous and huge, but hey…he is still a down to earth guy.
